BRIAN CHAMBERS, 35, of Greenfield, died Mon., Oct. 14th, at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston. A Mass of the Resurrection for BRIAN CHAMBERS will be held 10:30-a.m. Fri., Oct. 18th, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Greenfield. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

A luncheon will immediately following the mass.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 17th from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the St. John’s Catholic Church in Greenfield with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com. Memorials may be directed to the Brian Chambers memorial fund to be established by the family at a later date.

Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery in Creston.

His son – D’Vid Chambers of Creston; His mother– Phyllis Shilling and husband Kevin of Greenfield; His father – David Chambers and wife Kim of Cedar Rapids; His brother – Tim Chambers of Peoria, Illinois.

His step siblings – David (Jennifer) Shilling, Daniel (Anna) Shilling, Josh (Shelly) Luchtenburg, Jason (Megan) Luchtenburg, Jacob Luchtenburg, Sarah (Jason) Curby and Linda (Steve) Carnicle.

His maternal grandmother – Martina Breheny of Greenfield; Other relatives and friends.

Council Bluffs settles wrongful conviction lawsuit

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The city of Council Bluffs has settled a lawsuit with two Omaha, Neb., men who sought millions of dollars after the courts concluded they were wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for 25 years. The lawsuit filed by Terry Harrington and Curtis McGhee was scheduled for retrial Tuesday before a federal jury in Des Moines. The first trial ended in mistrial last year after jurors disagreed on the verdict.

The two men seek compensation from the city and two former police detectives for years in prison after their conviction for the 1977 shooting death of a retired police captain. Harrington and McGhee were released in 2003 after the Iowa Supreme Court found prosecutors committed misconduct by hiding evidence.

Federal court documents show a judge has ordered details of the city settlement sealed.

Dodgers top Cardinals 3-0, cut NLCS deficit to 2-1

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hyun-Jin Ryu outpitched Adam Wainwright with seven innings of three-hit ball, Adrian Gonzalez’s RBI double ended a 1-for-17 drought for the Dodgers with runners in scoring position, and Los Angeles got back into the NL championship series with a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.

Yasiel Puig and Hanley Ramirez also had run-scoring hits for the Dodgers, who trail the best-of-seven series 2-1. Game 4 is Tuesday at Dodger Stadium, followed by Game 5 on Wednesday. Retired Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda, whose 1988 team won the franchise’s last World Series title in 1988, stood up and waved his white rally towel in the eighth to raucous applause.

St. Louis third baseman David Freese left Game 3 of the NL championship series in the fifth inning Monday night with an apparent ankle injury. Pinch-runner Daniel Descalso then made a major mistake in his place, getting doubled off second base to hurt a St. Louis rally. Freese singled to lead off the fifth with the Cardinals’ first hit off Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu, but the Cardinals’ training staff came out to meet him at first base.

After Freese advanced to second on Matt Adams’ single, Descalso emerged from the St. Louis dugout to replace Freese. Descalso then took off for third base on Jon Jay’s tailing fly to shallow left field, and Carl Crawford doubled him up. The Cardinals failed to score in the inning and trailed 2-0.

Red Oak woman arrested on theft charge Monday

A woman from Montgomery County was arrested Monday afternoon on theft charges. According to Red Oak Police, 37-year old Rachel Charise Kathleen Hadden, of Red Oak, was taken into custody on a Red Oak Police warrant, and two Montgomery County warrants, for Theft in the 5th Degree. Hadden was being held in the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center on $2,300 cash bond.

JOLENE SCHWINGER, 60, of Stuart, formerly of Clarksville died Friday, October 11th at her home.  Funeral services for JOLENE SCHWINGER will be held on Thursday, October 17th at 10:00 am at the First Congregational Church in Stuart.  Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart has the arrangements.

Shelby County Fire Danger remains “Moderate”

The Shelby County Emergency Management Agency has updated the fire danger warning signs in the county. Emergency Coordinator Bob Seivert says the signs will stay in the moderate category to start the week. He says showers forecasted this morning did not materialize and the winds are once again strong out of the southeast.

The winds will elevate the danger of a wild fire spreading quickly while also gaining fuel by creating drying conditions. The Shelby County EMA will update the situation again on Thursday.

U of IA to pay $300,000 in rowing case

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa will pay $300,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a former women’s rowing participant who claimed that intense training workouts left her with debilitating leg injuries.  The settlement avoids trial in the case of Margaret Krusing, who argued that former coach Mandi Kowal imposed excessive training requirements. It was approved Friday and released to The Associated Press under the public records law.

Krusing joined the team in 2007 and was unprepared for the running and biking regimen Kowal required. She soon started complaining of burning in her legs and numbness in her feet. She developed exertional compartment syndrome, a condition that made it hard for her to walk and required numerous surgeries.

Both sides say they’re pleased to settle the lawsuit, which was filed in 2010.

Pacific Junction pair charged with child endangerment

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports a Pacific Junction man faces 2 counts of Child Endangerment. 33-year old Timothy Eugene Truhlicka was arrested Friday morning at the Mills County Sheriff’s Office. No other details were provided. Truhlicka was being held in the Mills County Jail on $2,000 bond.

That same day, 26-year old Amber Rose Pearson, of Pacific Junction, was arrested on a warrant charging her with 2 counts of child endangerment. She was also arrested for being a fugitive from justice. Pearson’s bond was set at $14,000.

On Saturday, Mills County deputies arrested 50-year old Ernest Leroy Runyon, of Hastings. Runyon was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault. He was being held without bond in the Mills County Jail. And early Sunday morning, 27-year old Kristen Ann Svendsen, of Bellevue, NE, was arrested on Applewood Road.  Svendsen was charged with OWI/1st offense. Her bond was set at $1,000.

Accident and arrest in Atlantic

Officials with the Atlantic Police Department report the arrest on Saturday, of 48-year old Floyd Johnson. The Wiota man was charged with OWI/2nd offense, and brought to the Cass County Jail.

The A-PD reports also, an Atlantic woman was cited for Failure to obey a traffic control device following an accident Friday evening near the intersection of 7th Street and Hospital Drive. Officials say a vehicle driven by Sue Bierbaum, of Atlantic, was traveling south from the HyVee parking lot, when she entered the intersection on a red light and hit an eastbound vehicle driven by Daniel Pross, of Atlantic. No injuries were reported. Damage from the accident amounted to $20,000.
