Lenox man arrested on drug & child endangement charges, his wife for child endangerment

Police in Lenox report two people were arrested Friday night after officers investigated a report about children screaming and throwing things out of a window of a darkened mobile home. The call about activity at 601 S. Walnut Street, #16, came in at around 6:45-p.m.  On arrival officers observed two nude females, later identified as 18 months and 4 years old. Both were in a rear bedroom and had thrown a number of items out a broken window.

Officers entered the trailer and found the door of the room the children were in tied shut with a strap. A male identified as 24-year old Kyle Robert Potter, of Lenox, was found unconscious and believed to be under the influence of an illegal drug in a bedroom. drug paraphernalia and a small amount of marijuana were found next to him. Potter was arrested on two counts of Child endangerment, Class D Felonies, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

While officers were present, a female identified as 21-year old Cassie Ann Potter, of Lenox, arrived at the residence. Potter identified herself as the children’s mother. Following questioning, she was also arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment, Class D felonies. Both were transported to the Taylor County Sheriffs office for processing and are being held on bond. Under the authority of the Chief of Police, both children were removed from the custody of their parents. They were placed into state foster care.

DOROTHY MAY, 94, of Greenfield passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013, at the Greenfield Manor in Greenfield.  Funeral services for DOROTHY MAY will be held 1:30-p.m. Thu., Nov. 7th, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield.
Visitation at the funeral home will be held on Wednesday, November 6th from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.
Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery, with a  luncheon to follow at the Commons Event Center in Greenfield.
Memorials may be directed to the Hebron United Methodist Church and/or the Care Initiative’s Hospice.
DOROTHY MAY is survived by:

Her children: James (Lois) May, of Greenfield; Patricia Donovan, of Maysville, MO: Janet (Steve) Mellinger, of Creston; and Dan May, of Greenfield.

Her sister: Phyllis Piper, of State Center.

11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, her sisters-in-law, Norma Donnellan, of Greenfield and Pat Donnellan, of Santa Cruz, CA; her life-long friend, Doris Corey, of Greenfield; other relatives and friends.

Accident and Alcohol Arrests in Montgomery County Friday

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a vehicle in a ditch on its side on 110th Street approximately 2 miles east of Highway 48 near Elliot at 9:41pm Friday (11/1/2013).   Upon arrival, the deputy observed a 2005 Red Chevy Silverado on its driver’s side in the north ditch facing the northeast.  A check of the immediate area failed to locate anyone at the scene.

The deputy recognized the vehicle and another responding deputy went to the residence at 2381 110th Street near Elliot and located the operator whom was determined to be 18-year-old Andrew C. Coughlin of Elliot.  Four additional occupants of the vehicle were also found at the residence and taken to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital to be checked out for possible and minor injuries.

Coughlin was charged with OWI First Offense, Possession of Alcohol Under 21 and cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign. He was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $1000 bond awaiting initial appearance before a magistrate.

Three of the passengers were also issued citations related to the accident.  18-year-old Olivia Marie Herzberg of Villisca was cited for Possession of Alcohol under 21.  21-year-old Allison Ann Luke of Tea, South Dakota and 21-year-old Thomas John Moore of Griswold, IA were both cited for Open Container as a Passenger.

Hunting Gear Theft Near Brooks

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office issued a report on Friday, Nov. 1st about the theft of some hunting materials on private land near Brooks.  Sometime between Monday, Oct. 21st  and Monday, Oct. 28th a One River’s Edge Camouflage Ladder Stand and a Camouflage Ameristep Portable Hunting Blind were taken from Ed Nelson’s land west of Brooks.  If anyone has any information about the theft please contact the Adams County Sheriff’s Office at 641-322-4444.

WILLIS EUGENE UMLAND, 80, of Gray died Thursday, Oct. 31st at the Friendship Home in Audubon.  Funeral Services for WILLIS UMLAND will be held on Monday, Nov. 4th at 10:30am in the First United Methodist Church in Audubon.  Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

Family visitation will be held from 4:00pm-7:00pm on Sunday, Nov. 3rd at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.

Iowa LB Marcus Collins dismissed from team

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa reserve linebacker Marcus Collins has been kicked off the team after being charged with drunken driving. Collins was arrested early Friday by Iowa City police. He was charged with operating while under the influence and driving with a suspended or canceled license.

Collins, a native of Yeadon, Pa., played in six games this season. He made six tackles and forced a fumble playing primarily on special teams. Coach Kirk Ferentz says Collins was already on a three-game suspension for undisclosed reasons.

The Hawkeyes face No. 22 Wisconsin on Saturday.
