Chiefs’ Hali to play vs Denver; Houston out

Sports

November 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali pronounced himself close to 100 percent for Sunday’s game against Denver, while fellow pass rusher Justin Houston is week to week with an elbow injury.  Hali went through practice Friday without feeling pain from a sprained right ankle sustained in last Sunday’s loss to San Diego. He initially thought that the injury was much more serious, but he received treatment early in the week and will play against the Broncos.

Houston dislocated his right elbow against the Chargers and it’s unclear when he’ll return. The Chiefs’ top pass rusher couldn’t have an MRI exam until Wednesday because of swelling, and trainer Rick Burkholder said Friday the elbow was still in a brace.  Chiefs coach Andy Reid does not believe the injury is season-ending.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Jake Rudock threw for two touchdowns, including a 24-yarder to Kevonte Martin-Manley right after Iowa had stuffed Nebraska on a fake punt, and the Hawkeyes finished the regular season with a 38-17 victory on Friday.  The Hawkeyes converted two of Nebraska’s three turnovers into touchdowns and got a short field for a third TD after the failed fake punt. Seven of Iowa’s 15 possessions started in Cornhuskers’ territory.

Iowa (8-4, 5-3 Big Ten) doubled its win total from a year ago and won a fourth road game for the first time since 2009. Mark Weisman ran 24 times for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Rudock left late in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury.

The Huskers (8-4, 5-3) had their lowest regular-season win total since 2008, coach Bo Pelini’s first year, and lost three games at home for the first time since 2007 under Bill Callahan.

ISU prof. to present NASA with anti-asteroid plan

News

November 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa State University professor has a plan for saving humanity from a devastating asteroid collision, and he’ll soon meet with officials at NASA to discuss his proposal. Engineering professor Bong Wie says one way to stop an asteroid from hurtling toward earth is to break up the rock with a nuclear device. He will meet Tuesday with NASA officials to talk about his research, which is being hashed out at the Asteroid Deflection Research Center in Ames.

The Des Moines Register says Wie plans to request a five-year, $5 million grant to put the research into action and launch a practice satellite. A NASA spokesman says there’s no grant request scheduled in the Tuesday meeting. Wie says developing the project will take more than a decade.

Iowa St, West Virginia meet in 2013 finale

Sports

November 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Not long after Paul Rhoads finally thawed out from the coldest game in the history of Iowa State’s home stadium, the Cyclones’ coach recalled a night at West Virginia in 2005 that was even more bone chilling.

Rhoads was Pittsburgh’s defensive coordinator when the Panthers played in the Backyard Brawl in blustery snow and single-digit readings. He says the wind made that game feel colder than last week’s home finale against Kansas.

Still, Rhoads says the frigid Kansas win has mentally prepared Iowa State (2-9, 1-7 Big 12) for its first visit to West Virginia (4-7, 2-6) on Saturday. Temperatures for the late afternoon kickoff in Morgantown are expected to be balmy by comparison in the 30s.

The game marks the regular-season finale for both teams.
