Suicide Prevention week begins Tuesday

News

September 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

“Suicide Prevention Week” begins Tuesday in Iowa and runs through the 15th. Pat McGovern of the Iowa Department of Public Health says this year’s theme is “Suicide Prevention Is Everyone’s Business.” He says they are trying to let everyone know they can help others. “That it doesn’t take special skills, special credentials or anything like that to really ask how people are doing,” McGovern says. “I think in Iowa and the midwest in general, we are all pretty good about greeting people with ‘hi how are you doing,’ but we don’t always listen to the responses — it’s just kind of a social nicety.”

McGovern say you can help by being aware of the need of those around you. “If you see a neighbor or a classmate or a child or a good friend who just seems off. Maybe they’ve had a rough day or may a rough week,” McGovern says. He says follow up with them and ask if there is anything you can do to help. McGovern says taking that step can be difficult for some people. n — if it’s a student you can talk to a guidance counselor or their parents,” McGovern says. “If it’s just a neighbor or somebody you are worried about, there are resources available to make you feel more comfortable about following up with them, or that you can give to them for them to seek some assistance.”

McGovern says people can be hesitant that getting involved might make the situation worse.  He says people might think it will push the person over the edge, but he says research and discussions with people who have survived, shows that isn’t the case. McGovern says it may actually give them hope to take steps to right whatever’s going on in their lives,” he says. McGovern says if you see someone you think is in immediate danger of committing suicide, you should call 9-1-1. Otherwise getting involved will help.

“Research has shown that if we can even day delay by just as little as 30 seconds to a minute, between when overwhelming urge to follow through on suicide hits, if we can just delay that a little bit, we can work through what is going on,” according to McGovern. The Iowa Department of Public Health shows 445 Iowans died by suicide in 2013. To get help, you can call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-TALK or go to www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org. You may also contact Your Life Iowa at (855)-581-8111 or go to www.yourlifeiowa.org, or by texting HELP to 85511 from 3:00 to 11:00 P-M. daily.

Big 12 Conference suspends replay officials

Sports

September 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 Conference has suspended a replay official and replay communicator after a questionable play wasn’t reviewed in 19th-ranked Kansas State’s 32-28 victory at Iowa State. The conference said Sunday that the one-game suspensions are for a failure to follow established procedures in a timely manner.

An internal review by the league determined video evidence of the play was inconclusive. But Big 12 officiating supervisor Walt Anderson said the unidentified replay officials should have stopped the game before the next snap to allow for a review.

Kansas State’s Tyler Lockett caught a pass just before halftime Saturday. He appeared to be in contact with a pylon, which is considered out of bounds, but on-field officials ruled it a completion at the 1. With Iowa State unable to challenge because it was out of timeouts, the Wildcats quickly snapped the ball and scored to cut it to 28-20.

EAGLE GROVE, Iowa (AP) — Iowa troopers say a 33-year-old man has been fatally struck by a train after trying to drive around a railroad crossing. The Iowa State Patrol says Jesse Froehlich was killed Sunday near Eagle Grove. Troopers say two Union Pacific engines were traveling eastbound with no train cars attached when they hit his truck. Troopers say the crossing was lit and the drop-down crossing gates were operating when the collision occurred. They say Froehlich drove around the crossing guards. The Wright County medical examiner pronounced him dead at the scene. The state patrol is investigating.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ethanol production has become a key issue in Iowa’s closely matched U.S. Senate race, with both candidates pledging support for an industry that is important to the state’s corn-powered agricultural economy. Democrat Bruce Braley and Republican Joni Ernst have both sought to assure voters they oppose a proposal from the Environmental Protection Agency that would reduce the amounts of ethanol that must be blended into gasoline.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa landowners want to see the details of a proposed oil pipeline that would carry crude oil from North Dakota across the state to Illinois. Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners has said the 1,100-mile pipeline would likely cross 17 counties as it crosses from northwest to southeast Iowa. Energy Transfer Partners spokeswoman Vicki Granado says public meetings will take place across Iowa in December.

MACEDONIA, Iowa (AP) — The pilot of a crop-dusting helicopter is being treated for injuries after crashing in western Iowa this weekend. The helicopter crashed in a field near Macedonia after hitting a power line Saturday afternoon. Treynor Fire Chief Russ Maguire says the male pilot was out of the wreckage and conscious when paramedics arrived.

CLARION, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a 5-year-old and a 19-year-old were killed when an Iowa man’s car collided with a semi shortly after the man took his two children in a custody dispute. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the accident happened near Clarion Friday evening.

Wainwright, Cardinals beat up Brewers 9-1

Sports

September 7th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Adam Wainwright pitched a seven-hitter, Peter Boujos hit a two-run triple and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1 on Sunday. The Cardinals took three of four in the series at Miller Park to open a five-game lead on Milwaukee. St. Louis grabbed a 4-0 lead with four in the fourth against rookie Jimmy Nelson (2-7). Bourjos had the big blow, a triple to left-center that drove in Yadier Molina and Oscar Taveras

It was more than enough support for Wainwright (17-9), who is tied for the major league lead in victories. The right-hander struck out three. Wainwright uncharacteristically allowed three homers in his previous start. But the feast-or-famine Brewers managed just an RBI single by Carlos Gomez.

Milwaukee has lost 11 of 12.

Locker leads Titans to 26-10 win over Chiefs

Sports

September 7th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jake Locker threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns, Alex Smith was intercepted three times and the Tennessee Titans rolled to a 26-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Locker picked apart a Chiefs defense that lost linebacker Derrick Johnson and defensive tackle Mike DeVito to Achilles injuries. Locker was 22 of 33 and found eight different players, including former Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster.

Kendall Wright and Delanie Walker had TD catches for the Titans, and Ryan Succop was perfect on four field-goal attempts against the team that released him last weekend. Smith was 19 of 35 for 202 yards and a touchdown for a Chiefs offense missing suspended wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and right tackle Donald Stephenson.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson was carted off the field with an apparent leg injury late in the first half of the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Johnson, who is nearing Gary Spani’s franchise record for career tackles, fell in a heap in the middle of the field without anybody touching him. The nature of the injury was unclear, but it appeared that trainers were examining his Achilles tendon. The Chiefs have already lost fellow linebacker Joe Mays to a broken wrist.

Earlier in the game, Chiefs right tackle Jeff Allen appeared to hurt his right arm. He was already replacing the suspended Donald Stephenson. Allen was replaced in the lineup by Ryan Harris. Titans linebacker Zach Brown left with a shoulder injury.

************

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs were missing three starters for their season opener against the Tennessee Titans after cornerback Marcus Cooper was declared inactive for Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium. Cooper missed practice time this week with an ankle injury. Ron Parker took his place. The Chiefs were already missing wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and right tackle Donald Stephenson. Bowe is suspended for the opener following an arrest last November, and Stephenson will be out the first four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Also inactive for Kansas City were quarterback Aaron Murray, wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas, safety Kurt Coleman, center Eric Kush, offensive tackle Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and defensive end Damion Square. Quarterback Zach Mettenberg was inactive for Tennessee, along with wide receivers T.J. Graham and Kris Durham, defensive linemen Mike Martin and DaQuan Jones, linebacker Akeem Ayers and offensive tackle Byron Stingily.
