Glenwood woman arrested on an assault charge

Sheriff’s officials in Mills County report a woman was arrested on an assault charge, Monday. 40-year old Mary Jo Villegas, of Glenwood, was taken into custody at around 6-p.m. in the vicinity of Deacon Road, and charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury. Her bond was set at $1,000. And on Tuesday, Mills County deputies arrested 26-year old Robert David Dulaney, of Fluvanna, TX, on a charge of Theft in the 1st Degree. Dulaney was arrested along I-29 at around 2:35-p.m. His bond was set at $10,000.00.

Iowa State athletic director Pollard discusses heart attack

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard says he’ll return to work full time on Monday, just weeks after suffering a heart attack. Pollard met with the media Wednesday for the first time since suffering the attack while at a track meet at the University of Northern Iowa in early March.

Pollard underwent open heart surgery the next day. The 50-year-old Pollard says an artery tear, known as a dissection, caused his attack. Pollard added that he’s fortunate the attack happened at a place where there were medical personnel on hand.

Hoiberg to be released from hospital

AMES, Iowa (AP) – The Mayo Clinic says Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg is expected to be released on Thursday, less than a week after open-heart surgery. Hoiberg had surgery at the clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on Friday to replace his aortic valve, a procedure he put off twice during the season.  Hoiberg is expected to need 4-6 weeks of recovery before returning to work.

Hoiberg retired from the NBA following the 2004-05 season following heart issues. He just completed his fifth season at Iowa State, leading the Cyclones to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles.

Bluffs High School on a brief lockdown Thu. morning

A school in Council Bluffs was on a brief lock-down late this (Thursday) morning. The Daily NonPareil reports Council Bluffs Police were called to the Thomas Jefferson High School at around 11:45-a.m., upon reports of a man allegedly brandishing a knife outside the school. The unidentified suspect was standing outside the school, on West Broadway, holding a knife.

Officers on the scene were able to apprehend the man. The school was on lockdown for less than five minutes during the incident.

Additional information was not immediately available.

WILBUR “BUD” WOODWARD, 97, of Atlantic and formerly of Lewis died Tuesday, April 21st at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.  A celebration of life service for WILBUR “BUD” WOODWARD will be held on Tuesday, April 28th at 10:30 am in the United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis.  Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be held on Monday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Private famly burial will be held prior to the service at the Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis.

CDC eyeing bird flu vaccine for humans, though risk is low

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Federal officials say they’re taking steps to create a human vaccine for the bird flu virus that’s affected the Midwest poultry industry, though they still consider the danger to be low. Dr. Alicia Fry, an influenza expert with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says they’re optimistic there won’t be any human cases of the H5N2 strain that has cost chicken and turkey producers nearly 6.8 million birds so far.

She said Wednesday that most human infections with other bird flu viruses have required close, prolonged contact with infected birds. So, officials are monitoring farm workers who’ve been exposed to affected flocks. Fry said the CDC has taken early steps toward developing a human vaccine in case it’s needed, but that’s a standard procedure with all emerging diseases.

Riding mowers stolen from Creston business

The Creston Police Department is investigating the theft of two riding mowers from a local business. Agrivision, in Creston, reported to authorities a 2004 and 2015 John Deere riding mower were taken from the business at 710 E. Taylor Street, sometime between Noon April 8th and 2:30-p.m. on April 20th. The loss was estimated at $10,029.
