OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Traffic is moving again on Interstate 29 in southwest Iowa after four months of long detours because of flooding on the Missouri River. The Iowa Department of Transportation opened I-29 from near Pacific Junction to the Missouri border on Saturday. It ended a detour to Kansas City, Mo., that stretched hundreds of miles through central Iowa via Interstate 35. There are still a few traffic snarls around Hamburg to deal with, but drivers say it’s better than before. Georgia Wolt, of Sioux Falls, S.D., travels south to see her sons, and says her trip has been cut by about 1 1/2 hours. Road crews are focusing on repairing I-680 north of Council Bluffs, and hope to reopen a 3-mile stretch by late December.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs police have released the name of a man who died after he was hit by a train. Police on Monday identified the man as 50-year-old Donald Blakeman, of Council Bluffs. Witnesses told police that Blakeman was hit Sunday night as he tried to cross the tracks. Police say video from the train confirms those accounts. Blakeman was taken to a hospital in Omaha, Neb., where he died.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs police are investigating the theft of two chalices valued at $5,000 from a church. The Rev. Dan Kirby of the Corpus Christi Parish reported the silver and gold chalices were stolen from the Holy Family Church. Kirby told police the chalices, which were in a cupboard, were taken between 11 a.m. on Oct. 2 and 11 a.m. last Wednesday. No arrests have been reported.

Two Atlantic men were arrested over the weekend. According to the Police Department, 40-year old Sean Brousseau, Sr., was arrested Friday, on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault. And, on Sunday, 36-year old Russell Lower was taken into custody for Disorderly Conduct.

Both men were brought to the Cass County Jail and held pending an appearance before the magistrate.

One person was injured during a farming accident over the weekend northeast of Oakland, in Pottawattamie County. Sheriff’s Department spokesman, Sgt. Dwayne Riche says a Case model 275 tractor owned by David Lee Applegate, of Oakland, and driven by 16-year old Cory Reichart, of Oakland, was backing up to a trailer, under the direction of 18-year old Collin David Applegate, of Oakland.

As the tractor was backing up, Collin Applegate’s left leg got caught between the trailer and tractor, causing a severe, but non-life threatening injury. Sgt. Riche says the mans’ leg was nearly severed at the knee. He was flown by helicopter to Creighton University Hospital’s Trauma Center for treatment.

The accident happened at around 1:45-p.m. Saturday.

There’s still no sign of a man who witnesses say jumped from the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge linking Iowa and Nebraska, Friday evening. According to Police, the family of 19-year old Cory Criss heard from him just before authorities received a call of about someone jumping off the bridge at around 8:30 p.m. The family said Criss was suicidal.

Rescue crews and police spent more than two hours searching along both sides of the Missouri River and a rescue boat was launched Friday and again Saturday evening. Criss’ backpack was recovered, but there’s been no sighting of his remains.

The City Council in Audubon is expected to act on a resolution tonight, calling for the disposal of a vacated portion of Davis Street, and the offering of property to adjacent property owners. The move will take place during the council’s regular session, which begins at 7-p.m.  The Audubon City Council will also discuss compensation practices, and, siding for the Police Office.

Two public hearings are on the agenda for this evening’s meeting of the Massena City Council. At 6:30, a hearing will be held with regard to housing rehabilitation and construction programs administered by the Southwest Iowa Planning Council (SWIPCO), and, at 6:45, a hearing will take place with regard to a 2010 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application for wastewater collection systems improvement.

During the start of the regular session at 7-p.m., the Massena City Council will take action on approving the SWIPCO and CDBG applications, along with a contract for wastewater collection systems improvement. The council will also hear a presentation on rural water from a representative with SIRWA, and act on approving an agreement with Railroad Management, L.L.C and the City of Massena.

In other business, they’ll act on approving payment for blacktop service using funds from the Local Option Sales Tax and/or Betterment Fund, set the date for trick-or-treating, and discuss the demolition of a home at 208 East Cedar Street.
