Douglas, Wieber tie in 1st night of gym nationals

Sports

June 9th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Gymnastics might just have its next big rivalry after Gabby Douglas, of West Des Moines,  pulled off something of an upset at the first night of the U.S. gymnastics championships, tying Jordyn Wieber atop the standings Friday night.  The two have 60.650 points, 0.45 ahead of Aly Raisman. The finals are Sunday afternoon.

Wieber is the world champ and heavy favorite for the London Olympics, having lost only one all-around competition since the start of the 2008 season. But Douglas, a native of Virginia, has been rising fast, and she showed she just might have the goods to give the Americans another 1-2 punch like they had four years ago in Beijing with Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson. Liukin has some work to do to make her second Olympic squad after a shaky outing on uneven bars.

Clarinda man arrested Thursday night on assault charge

News

June 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers reports a 19-year old was arrested Thursday night on an assault charge. Brothers says Joseph Ray Azevedo, of Clarinda, was charged with Misdemeanor Domestic Abuse Assault, after officers responded to a 9-1-1 call, where a woman had been screaming for help from an apartment. When they arrived shortly after 8:30-p.m. at 114 West Washington Street officers discovered that an eighteen year old female living in one of the apartments had allegedly been physically assaulted by Azevedo, who she was living with.

The woman was not injured during the alleged assault, and did not seek or require medical attention. Azevedo was taken to the Page County Jail and held without bond pending an initial appearance before a Page County Magistrate. The incident was subsequently referred to the Page County Attorney’s Office for review.
