Drive-by shooting reported in Council Bluffs

A residence in Council Bluffs was hit by gunfire Tuesday morning. A police report cited by the Council Bluffs Non Pareil says the home located in the 4000 block of Ramelle Drive, was struck shortly after midnight, Tuesday. A person in their 40’s who lives in the home told officers two people were allegedly involved in the drive-by shooting. The resident described the suspects as being white, and in their early to mid-20’s. No injuries were reported.

JANICE WILLIAMS, 86, of Atlantic, died Tue., Aug. 21st, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. A Celebration of Life service for JANICE WILLIAMS will be held 1-p.m. Sat., Aug, 25th, at the 1st United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic is in charge of the arrangements.

A luncheon will be held at Noon on Saturday, prior to the service, in the church fellowship hall.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A new trial date is expected to be set for a man accused of killing a Cedar Rapids cab driver after a mistrial was declared because of a prosecutor’s medical condition. Johnathan Mitchell is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the April slaying Cathy Stickley.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The operator of Sioux City’s riverboat casino has turned down a contract offer from its nonprofit partner that holds the gambling license. The Missouri River Historical Development approved an extension of its operating agreement with Penn National Gaming Co. through March 2015, and added language that would allow the group to negotiate with other operators on a new land-based casino. Penn rejected the offer.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Military officials say fighter jets intercepted two small planes during President Barack Obama’s visit to Des Moines last week for violating the temporary flight restricted area. The Des Moines Register reports both planes were escorted to nearby airfields during Obama’s visit on Aug. 13. Officials say neither incident posed a danger to Obama, but flight space is restricted during presidential visits.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Authorities in Waterloo say the mother of one of two Iowa cousins missing for more than a month was taken to a hospital after police found her unresponsive at a relative’s home. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier cites a police report that says Misty Morrissey was taken Monday to Allen Hospital. Morrissey is the mother of 10-year-old Lyric Cook, who was reported missing last month along with her cousin, 9-year-old Elizabeth Collins.

4 teens face charges in connection with late July burglary & theft

An investigation into a burglary and theft at a funeral home in Clarinda that occured back on July 31st, has resulted in the arrest of four juveniles. According to Clarinda Police, four unidentified boys between the ages of 14 and 15 were arrested Sunday. The teens were charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief, in connection with an incident at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda.  The owner of the busines reported to police that a BMW parked in the drive had been crashed through a garage door at the funeral home. Two firearms inside the car were stolen. The teens’ cases will be heard in Page County Juvenile Court, at an unspecified date and time.

Two women sent to the hospital following an accident in Red Oak Tuesday

An accident Tuesday morning in Red Oak resulted in two women being transported to the hospital. According to authorities, the accident happened at around 11:30-a.m., at the intersection of Highway 34 and north 8th Street. Officials say a vehicle driven by 74-year-old Ailene Iris Coates, of Red Oak was stopped on north 8th Street and attempting to cross Highway 34. Coates failed to notice an eastbound vehicle driven by 24-year-old Samatha Marie Thomas, of Red Oak. When Coates pulled away from the stop sign  and in front of Thomas, the vehicles collided.  Following the impact, Coates’ vehicle came to rest in the east ditch, on the south side of Highway 34. Coates was taken by Red Oak Rescue to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, while Thomas was transported to facility by private vehicle. Authorities said Coates was cited for failure to yield.
