Harkin jokes about Romney, Ryan, Steve King with Halloween theme

Senator Tom Harkin used a weekend speech to Iowa Democrats to argue for President Obama’s reelection, where he said the country is better off now, than it was four-years ago. But Harkin also used humor — with a Halloween theme — to suggest Republicans offer a “scary” agenda for the country. “Paul Ryan is Eddie Munster. Mitt Romney is Freddy Krueger, slashing Big Bird and Planned Parenthood. Steve King dressed up as,” Harkin paused for effect, before adding, “Steve King.” The crowd laughed at Harkin’s jokes about Romney and Ryan, but they laughed and cheered Harkin’s blast at Steve King, the Republican congressman from northwest Iowa. Paul Ryan campaigned in Council Bluffs and Sioux City, Sunday. President Obama is scheduled to visit the Quad Cities on Wednesday.

Giants beat Cardinals 6-1 to force NLCS Game 7

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ryan Vogelsong struck out a career-best nine in another postseason gem and the San Francisco Giants forced a decisive Game 7 in the NL championship series with a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night. Marco Scutaro hit a two-run double and Buster Posey drove in his first run of the series with a groundout in the first inning as San Francisco struck early to support Vogelsong. Matt Cain will start for the Giants against Kyle Lohse in Game 7 tonight (Monday night). Lohse won their Game 3 matchup.

Allen Craig hit an RBI single in the sixth for the Cardinals. Craig shifted from first base to left field in place of injured Matt Holliday, a late scratch with lower back tightness. The Giants have won five straight games this postseason when facing elimination.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan is in western Iowa to urge people to vote for Mitt Romney, saying another four years of President Barack Obama will lead to higher national debt and continued economic struggles. Ryan’s remarks came Sunday before an enthusiastic crowd of about 500 people at a campaign rally in the parking lot of an outdoor outfitter store in Council Bluffs. Later in the day, he repeated his message at a slightly smaller rally in Sioux City on the banks of the Missouri River.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Police are investigating a shooting in Dubuque, Iowa that left one teen dead and another hospitalized. The shooting happened around 11:50 p.m. Saturday. Dubuque police say officers found two wounded teenage boys when they responded to a call.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Redistricting has created four competitive congressional races pitting two incumbents against one another and giving a House veteran his toughest challenge yet. Iowa lost one district in redistricting, creating much of the upheaval. It prompted nine-term Republican Representative Tom Latham to move into the 3rd district to avoid running against GOP Representative Steve King. In the 2nd district, Democratic Representative Dave Loebsack moved to avoid opposing Democrat Bruce Braley.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa woman has pleaded guilty to charges that she attacked her ex-boyfriend and tried to light his house on fire in March. Twenty-six-year-old Thorsha Gary pleaded guilty Friday to reduced charges of second-degree arson and second-degree burglary.

VP nominee Ryan urges Iowa voters to back GOP

FRANKLIN DUANE EVANS, 69, of Shelby, died Sun., Oct. 21st, at his home near Shelby. Memorial services for FRANKLIN EVANS will be held 7-p.m. Wed., Oct. 24th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca.

The family will visit with friends at the funeral home, from 5-7pm Wednesday, prior to the service.

A private burial of cremains will be held in the Shelby Cemetery.

FRANKLIN EVANS is survived by:

His wife – Marilyn Evans, of Shelby.

His sons – Andy Evans, of Dunlap, and Joel (Erin) Evans, of Shelby.

His daughter – Allison (Richard) Maassen, of Persia.

His brothers – John (Doris) Evans, of Fargo, ND; Gerald (Jeanette) Evans, of Shelby; Richard Evans, of Bloomfield; & Steven (Christy) Evans, of Shelby.

Sister:  Nancy (Ken) Collins of Shelby.

SW IA man arrested for speeding and drugs, Saturday

Sheriff’s officials in Fremont County say a traffic stop for speeding early Saturday morning in Hamburg, resulted in a Farragut man being arrested on numerous drug-related charges. A deputy stopped 18-year old Ryan Michael Casey, of Farragut,  at around 3:40-a.m. Upon further investigation, Casey was taken into custody for OWI/1st Offense, Speeding, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Amphetamines, Possession of Diazepam, Possession of Alprazolam, Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Casey was brought to the Fremont County Jail and held over the weekend on $15,000 bond.

Nittany Lions Roll Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Bill Belton ran for 103 yards and three touchdowns and surging Penn State throttled Iowa 38-14 on Saturday night for its fifth straight win.

Matt McGloin threw for 289 yards and a pair of TDs for the Nittany Lions, who beat the Hawkeyes in Iowa City for the first time in 13 years.

Penn State (5-2, 3-0) took the suspense of this matchup between previously-unbeaten Big Ten teams by storming out to a 24-0 lead at halftime. The Nittany Lions scored again just 27 seconds into the second half to go ahead 31-0.

James Vandenberg threw for 189 yards for Iowa (4-3, 2-1). The Hawkeyes were held to just 209 yards of offense and tacked on a pair of late touchdowns that made the final score seem much closer than the game ever really was.

WILLIAM “BILL” MURPHY, 76, of Wiota (A Long time resident of Cass County, North of Wiota) died Sat., Oct. 20th, at the Southern Hill Specialty Care Center in Osceola.  Funeral services for BILL MURPHY will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Oct. 24th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anita. Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation is open at the funeral home Mon. & Tue. (Oct. 22nd & 23rd), from 8am-to 5:30pm. A Rosary will be held at the funeral home 6-p.m. Tues., with the family meeting friends from 6:30-to 8pm Tuesday. Condolences may be left online at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.

Drake Rallies Late, Defeats Marist in OT 34-27

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Gary Scott scored on a 2-yard run in overtime and Mike Piatkowski threw for 373 yards and two touchdowns as Drake scored the final 31 points of the game to defeat Marist 34-27 Saturday.

Scott, who rushed for 90 yards, also scored on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter that pulled the Bulldogs (6-2, 5-0 Pioneer League) within 27-19.

Piatkowski followed with a 17-yard TD to Joey Orlando with 7:07 remaining, then found Kevin Marshall for the two-point conversion to tie the game.

Marist (2-5, 1-3), which led 27-3 late in the third quarter, got 80 yards rushing and a pair of scores from Max Jacques, and two TD passes from Tommy Reilly, who was 9 of 21 for 185 yards in his first start of the year. The Red Foxes had a third-and-goal from the 1-yard line on their overtime possession, but Reilly was sacked on each of the next two plays.

Cyclones Can’t Find Offense, Fall to Cowboys

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) – J.W. Walsh threw for 415 yards and a touchdown, and Joseph Randle scored twice and set up another touchdown with a big fourth-quarter run as Oklahoma State beat Iowa State 31-10 on Saturday.

Walsh was 32 of 47 in compiling the ninth-highest single-game passing performance in school history. The victory was the 63rd of coach Mike Gundy’s career, moving him past Pat Jones into No. 1 on the school’s all-time list.

The Cowboys (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) gained a small measure of revenge on Iowa State (4-3, 1-3), which ended Oklahoma State’s national title chances last year with an upset in double overtime. There was no drama this time – the Cyclones struggled to move the ball after scoring 10 first-quarter points.

Randle had 151 yards on 24 carries. His 62-yard gain early in the fourth quarter put the Cowboys at the 14-yard line, and Walsh scored three plays later.
