MARILYN D. YOUNG, 91, of Exira, died Sat., Oct. 27th, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services for MARILYN YOUNG will be held 10:30-a.m.  Wed., Oct. 31st, at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6-7pm Tue., Oct. 30th.

Burial will be in the Exira Cemetery.

MARILYN YOUNG is survived by:

He sister – Noreen Leigan, of Exira.

Her step-children: Ronald (Carol) Young, of Beatrice, NE; Sharon (Craig) Leigan, of Shenandoah; Karen (John) Podzamsky, of Minonk, IL.

8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, other relatives & friends.

Palmer leads Raiders to 26-16 win over Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carson Palmer threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns, and the Oakland Raiders stuffed the struggling Kansas City Chiefs 26-16 on Sunday for their sixth straight win at Arrowhead Stadium. Sebastian Janikowski was perfect on four field-goal attempts, and the Raiders (3-4) nearly became the third straight team to keep the Kansas City offense out of the end zone.

The Chiefs (1-6) scored their only touchdown with 2:27 left in the game. Darren McFadden ran for 114 yards, and Denarius Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey had touchdown catches for Oakland, which has won two straight after losing four of its first five. Matt Cassel threw for 218 yards in place of Brady Quinn, who left in the first half with what the team called a “head injury.” Quinn had started his second straight game. The Chiefs have lost four straight and still have not led in regulation this season.

Kickoff time set for Oklahoma-Iowa State game

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – An 11 a.m. kickoff time has been set for the Oklahoma-Iowa State Big 12 football game.  OU announced that the Nov. 3 game in Ames, Iowa, will also be broadcast by ABC. The Sooners are coming off a 30-13 loss to Notre Dame while Iowa State defeated Baylor 35-21 on Saturday.

During that game,  Steele Jantz set career highs with 381 yards passing and five touchdowns, allowing Iowa State to snap a two-game losing streak.  Jantz tied a school record with 36 completions to lead the Iowa State (5-3, 2-3 Big 12), who moved within one win of bowl eligibility for the third time in four years.

Jantz started for the first time since late September. He responded with one of the best quarterback performances in school history. Three of Jantz’s touchdowns went to Jarvis West, whose 22-yard touchdown catch with 8:37 left made it 35-14 Cyclones.  Nick Florence threw for 426 yards and two touchdowns to lead Baylor (3-4, 0-4) which lost its fourth straight game.

Nebraska nuclear plant to be discussed at meeting

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The public will have a chance to get another update on the status of the troubled Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant at a meeting in Blair, NE., next month.  But the Nuclear Regulatory Commission decided to reschedule Tuesday’s meeting with Omaha Public Power District officials in Maryland because of a major storm forecast to hit the east coast.

The public meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 15 at Dana College’s Gardner-Hawks Center in Blair. After officials discuss the efforts to restart the plant, there will be time for questions.

Fort Calhoun sits 20 miles north of Omaha. It was initially shut down for refueling maintenance in April 2011, but flooding along the Missouri River and a series of safety violations forced it to stay closed.

Hunting accident Saturday in Central Iowa

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports one-person was injured during a hunting expedition Saturday, in Poweshiek County. Officials say 78-year old Darrell Lamb, of Grinnell, suffered minor injuries after being struck in the face by shotgun pellets while hunting pheasants.

Lamb was hit in the face by two pellet shots, when a pheasant flushed between him and three other members of his hunting party at the end of a food plot. Lamb and the others could not see one another because of the height of the food plot and the topography of the land.

The man was treated and released from Grinnell Regional Hospital. The incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday.

Chiefs QB Quinn sustains ‘head injury’ vs Raiders

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn is being evaluated for what the team called a “head injury” after leaving in the first half of their game against Oakland on Sunday. Quinn was starting in place of Matt Cassel, who was benched after a weak start to the year but entered the game when Quinn got hurt.  Quinn was hit hard on a sack by Rolando McClain on the Chiefs’ third possession, and then took another shot when he threw an interception off his back foot.     Cassel came into the game for the Chiefs’ next series.

Cassel sustained a concussion three weeks ago against Baltimore and missed a game at Tampa Bay before getting benched. He was cleared to practice during the Chiefs’ bye last week.

ZENA LYMAN, 48, of Greenfield, died Fri., Oct. 26th, at her home. A Graveside Memorial service for ZENA LYMAN will be held 11-a.m. Mon., Nov. 5th, at the Fairview Cemetery in rural Stuart. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

A family visitation will take place from 5-8pm Sun., Nov. 4th, at the Fairview Church. Online condolences may be left at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Zena Lyman Memorial Fund, to be established by the family.

ZENA LYMAN is survived by:

Her mother – Ernestine Low, of rural Stuart.

Her caregiver – John Lyman.

Her sisters – Lena (Jerry) Nelson, of Greenfield, and Deanna (Paul) Enderson, of Redfield.

Her brother – Kenneth (Angie) Low, of rural Stuart.

Her children – Emma (John) Akers, and J.D. Lyman.

2 grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

2012 Veterans Day Program at the Griswold Community Schools

Officials with the Griswold Community School District are inviting the public and especially veterans to the 2012 Veterans Day Program. The event will take place 2-p.m. Sun., Nov. 11th, in the auditorium at the Griswold Middle School/High School building. Guest speaker is Alan Cranston, of Marne, who enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956 at the age of 19, and retired in 1975. Following the program, everyone is invited to the cafeteria, for a dessert bar and fellowship.

In conjunction with the annual Veterans Day Program, cards of thanks are being sent to the men and women from our local area, currently serving in the military.
