DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Mike Piatkowski threw for 366 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, helping Drake keep its Pioneer League title hopes alive Saturday with a 45-20 victory over Butler.

Piatkowski, who was 29 of 40 with two interceptions, found Grahm Butler and Gary Scott for two scores each and Joey Orlando for one. Scott added 79 rushing yards and a touchdown for Drake (7-3, 6-1), which can tie Butler and repeat as Pioneer League co-champion with a win against Jacksonville next week.

Matt Lancaster threw two touchdown passes and ran for another for Butler (8-3, 7-1), which trailed only 14-13 early in the third quarter after Lancaster hit Brendan Shannon for a 45-yard score. But then Piatkowski came alive, throwing four TDs for 28 unanswered Drake points. The last scoring pass, an 18-yarder to Butler, made it 42-13 with 10:36 to play.

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) – David Johnson ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for another score to lead Northern Iowa past South Dakota 24-21 on Saturday.

Johnson, who finished with 130 yards rushing on 21 carries, scored on runs of 3 and 1 yards, and caught his only pass of the game, a 20-yarder from Sawyer Kollmorgen for the Panthers (4-6, 3-4 Missouri Valley).  It was Johnson’s fifth game in a row with at least 100 yards.

The Coyotes (1-9, 0-7) lost their eighth straight despite the efforts of Josh Vander Maten, who threw for 205 yards and ran for 135 more. He accounted for two scores. Will Powell caught nine passes for 127 yards and a touchdown for South Dakota, which hasn’t beaten Northern Iowa since 1981.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – David Ash passed for 364 yards and two touchdowns and No. 19 Texas honored former coach Darrell Royal by whipping Iowa State 33-7 on Saturday.

Ash had a 61-yard touchdown pass to Mike Davis in the first quarter. Johnathan Gray ran for two touchdowns for the Longhorns (8-2, 5-2 Big 12), who won their fourth in a row.

Texas paid tribute during the game to Royal, who died Wednesday at age 88. Texas lined up in the wishbone, the formation Royal introduced to college football in 1968, on the Longhorn’s first play. Instead of a run, Texas ran a trick play that resulted in a 47-yard pass.

Steele Jantz passed for 133 yards for the Cyclones (5-5, 2-5) but was under constant pressure from the Texas defense.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Percy Gibson led three Iowa State players with double-doubles by scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as Iowa State beat Southern 82-59 on Friday night in both teams’ season opener.

Senior transfer Will Clyburn had 16 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Georges Niang had 15 and 12 for the Cyclones, who shook off a rough start to win their 15th straight opener.

Southern led by as many as 11 points midway through the first half. But Iowa State pulled ahead 41-39 at halftime and opened the second half on a 25-11 run.

Derick Beltran had a game-high 26 points for Southern.

Korie Lucious, a transfer from Michigan State, shot just 1 of 12 from the field with seven turnovers in his Iowa State debut. But a strong second half carried the Cyclones to a convincing victory.
