(Update 6:15-a.m.): Stabbing and beating in Atlantic early Monday morning

Two men who were transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital following a stabbing and beating incident early this (Monday) morning, in Atlantic are reported to be under arrest, while another person was being detained for questioning at the Police Department.

Emergency medical  crews were called to the scene in an alley behind 1011 Birch Street at around 3:45-a.m.  One of the men was stabbed or cut in the abdomen, the other apparently hit with a metal object of some sort, possibly a pipe.

Atlantic Police Chief Steve Green told KJAN News officials are investigating the possibility others may have played a role in the incident but fled the scene before officers arrived.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Road conditions remain slippery across northern Iowa after freezing rain fell across much of the state. The Iowa Department of Transportation said conditions were starting to improve after the storm system left the state yesterday afternoon, but roads may be slippery through overnight hours. The latest information about road conditions is available online at www DOT 511IA DOT org or by calling 511 in Iowa.

ATTICA, Iowa (AP) — Iowa environmental officials have ordered residents of Attica to boil their water before using it because of a water main break. The city’s water system lost pressure on Saturday, so there is a possibility of bacterial contamination. Attica is about 45 miles southeast of Des Moines.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — U.S. Representative Bruce Braley says he is considering running for Tom Harkin’s U.S. Senate seat in 2014. Harkin announced Saturday that he won’t run for a sixth term in the Senate, which the Democrat was elected to in 1984. Braley is a 55-year-old Waterloo attorney who was first elected to Congress representing northeast Iowa in 2006.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Terone Johnson had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Ronnie Johnson scored 15 to lead Purdue to a 65-62 victory over Iowa yesterday. Mike Gesell had 18 points to lead the Hawkeyes in West Lafayette, Indiana. Roy Devyn Marble, Aaron White and Melsahn Basabe each scored 12 points for IU. Basabe also had eight rebounds. The two teams meet again February 27th in Iowa City.

Purdue defeats Iowa 65-62 in overtime

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Terone Johnson had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Ronnie Johnson scored 15 to lead Purdue to a 65-62 victory over Iowa on Sunday. Donnie Hale had 12 points and five rebounds and D.J. Byrd had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Boilermakers (11-9, 4-3 Big Ten), who have won four of their last five.

Mike Gesell had 18 points to lead the Hawkeyes. Roy Devyn Marble, Aaron White and Melsahn Basabe each scored 12 points for Iowa (13-7, 2-5). Basabe also had eight rebounds. Purdue never trailed in overtime. Ronnie Johnson scored the go-ahead basket with 1:27 left in overtime to give Purdue a 61-59 lead. The Hawkeyes missed two free throws and two field goals and Byrd extended the lead with two free throws with 30 seconds left to make it 63-59.

The two teams meet again on Feb. 27 in Iowa City.

Nishna Valley Trails group to meet Monday evening

Persons interested in recreation, wellness, trails and tourism are invited to attend the next meeting of the Nishna Valley Trails association, on Monday, January 28th, from 6 to 7 p.m., at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1101 E. 13th Street in Atlantic.  Officials with the organization say following brief updates on the development of trails in Cass County and Atlantic and reports on work with city and county partners, the group will brainstorm ideas for promoting and developing trails in the months ahead, including the next Bike/Trails Expo.

Everyone is invited to bring their good ideas and interest in community development, and join in the conversation.

Doolittle, Iowa women down No. 23 Michigan 63-57

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Bethany Doolittle tallied 19 points as Iowa avenged a Jan. 6 loss to No. 23 Michigan with a 63-57 victory Sunday. Iowa (16-5, 5-1 Big 10 Conference) trailed 32-30 at halftime, and after briefly leading by three points on Samantha Logic’s jumper with 11:28 left, trailed 52-50 with 6:09 to play. Jamie Printy made it 53-52 with a 3-pointer with 5:52 left, and after two Kate Thompson free throws for Michigan, Doolittle hit a go-ahead jumper that put the Hawkeyes ahead for good with 5:20 to play.

The jumper sparked an 8-1 Iowa run, with Doolittle accounting for all eight points via jump shots. Doolittle hit 9 of 15 from the floor as Iowa drained 46 percent (23 of 50) of its shots. Printy pitched in 14 points. Jenny Ryan led Michigan (16-4, 5-2) with 20 points and four assists. The Wolverines had won the teams’ first matchup 68-64.

Missouri State tops Drake 78-72

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Anthony Downing scored 26 points to lead Missouri State to a 78-72 victory over Drake on Sunday. Keith Pickens added 19 points and seven rebounds for the Bears (6-15, 4-5 Missouri Valley), who completed the regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs. Missouri State also won 77-65 at Des Moines, Iowa on Jan. 5.

Marcus Marshall scored 12 points for Missouri State. The Bears, who shot 56 percent in the game, trailed by 10 early in the second half but took the lead for good at 58-57 on Downing’s basket with 6:52 to play. Ben Simons led Drake (9-11, 3-6) with 19 points. Micah Mason scored 17 and Seth VanDeest added 12 points for the Bulldogs, who were coming off a 74-69 home win over No. 17 Creighton on Wednesday. The Bears are 21-1 all-time against Drake in Springfield.

Red Oak man arrested on assault & other charges, Saturday

Police in Red Oak say a local man was arrested Saturday evening on four charges. 22-year-old Shane Michael Murley of Red Oak , was taken into custody on charges that include: Serious domestic assault, child endangerment, simple assault, and obstruction of emergency communication. Murley was being held without bond, in the Montgomery County Jail

Stabbing in Stuart leads to 3 arrests Saturday

Officials with the Stuart Police Department report a fight Saturday morning led to serious injuries to one person, two arrests and the recovery of stolen weapons. Authorities report one man was stabbed while another man was intentionally covered in gasoline and nearly set on fire by another male subject.A stolen handgun was also recovered nearby. All suspects have been identified and one of two is in custody, while other persons face charges related to the fight.

Two other adults who were present at the fight were arrested for charges connected to a home burglary in Stuart on Friday, January 25th. Officials says Stuart Police officers conducted search warrants at residences in Stuart, rural Adair, and Earlham. Stolen property was recovered as well as six stolen rifles and two stolen handguns. Several of the firearms, including an “SKS” rifle were recovered by Stuart Officers at a residence in Earlham.

A male at the Earlham residence was arrested for various charges and several other suspects have been identified and face charges related to the burglary case. The Police report did not mention the names of the suspects or victims.

CAROL HAGEDORN, 72,of Manning, died unexpectedly Sat., Jan. 26th, at home in Manning. Funeral services for CAROL HAGEDORN will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Jan. 30th, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 5-p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 39th.

Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

CAROL HAGEDORN is survived by:

Her husband – Robert Hagedorn, of Manning.

Her sons – Jeff (Marcia) Hagedorn, of Roland; Jon Hagedorn, of Urbandale.

Her daughters – Julie Hagedorn, of Des Moines, & Jackie Hagedorn, of Manning.

Her sister – Barbara (Larry) Horky, of Sioux City.

6 grandchildren, her in-laws, other relatives and friends.

HAROLD C. JOHNSON, 92, of Atlantic (& formerly of Lewis), died Sun., Jan. 27th, at the Heritage House in Atlantic. Celebration of Life services for HAROLD JOHNSON will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Jan. 29th, at the Lewis United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis. Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation is open at the funeral home from 8-a.m. to 5-p.m. Monday, prior to the family meeting with friends from 5-to 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis immediately prior to the Celebration of Life service.

HAROLD C. JOHNSON is survived by:

His wife – Marjorie.

His daughters – Linda (Tony) Finnerty, of Burnsville, MN; Barbara Bakhit, of Omaha, NE; Kathy (Rich) Govig, of Lewis; and, Beth (Randy) Zimmerman, of Indianola.
