Chiefs restructure contract of lineman Jackson

Sports

March 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured the contract of defensive end Tyson Jackson, freeing up space under the salary cap as free agency approaches. Jackson has become a valuable part of the defensive line, but not the star the Chiefs hoped when they selected him third overall in the 2009 draft. Partly as a result of that high selection, Jackson would have made $14.72 million and counted $17.5 million toward the cap this season.

The details of his restructured deal were not available, but it should leave more flexibility for new Chiefs general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid to pursue free agents. Dorsey and Reid have been busy the past couple weeks, trading with the 49ers for quarterback Alex Smith, signing wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and punter Dustin Colquitt to five-year deals, and putting the franchise tag on left tackle Branden Albert to keep him in Kansas City.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is getting a second opinion on his ailing elbow. General manager John Mozeliak said Furcal would be examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews. The 35-year-old Furcal is out indefinitely after reinjuring the elbow he hurt late last season. Furcal and the team elected to try rehab rather than reconstructive surgery in the offseason. The Cardinals also have Pete Kozma, who stepped in last fall as a rookie, and offseason pickup Ronny Cedeno at shortstop.

UNI’s Sinkfield helps draft stock with fast 40s

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Former Northern Iowa wide receiver Terrell Sinkfield was not invited to the NFL scouting combine. He’s doing his best to make himself attractive for the upcoming draft, however. Sinkfield was invited to Minnesota’s pro prospect workouts on Monday, with several other prospects from the region. He said he was told his fastest 40-yard dash was an astounding 4.19 seconds. His other times were 4.27 and 4.44, when he tripped during the run.

Times can vary from source to source, and Vikings director of college scouting Scott Studwell told the St. Paul Pioneer Press he didn’t clock Sinkfield with any sub-4.3 times. But Studwell said he thought Sinkfield “tested well.” Even Sinkfield’s cumulative time of 4.33 seconds would give him elite speed. The 6-foot-1 Sinkfield went to Hopkins High School, a Minneapolis suburb.
