Chris Carpenter realizes his baseball career may be over. The 37-year-old right-hander made a surprise appearance at the St. Louis Cardinals’ spring-training camp Monday and said he’s still dealing with numbing and tingling sensations in his pitching hand, arm and shoulder. Asked if he wanted to continue pitching, the former Cy Young Award winner said, “I do. I just don’t think I can.”

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A Waterloo man convicted of fatally shooting his ex-fiancee’s mother has been sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder. Judge Todd Geer also sentenced 34-year-old Kevin Ambrose yesterday to 50 years in prison for two attempted murder charges. A five-year sentence on a firearm charge will run concurrently.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A woman who had been teaching chemistry at a Cedar Rapids high school has pleaded guilty to having sex with a student. Forty-two-year-old Heather Adams made the plea yesterday at Linn County District Court, before jury selection began. Adams admitted to one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee, a misdemeanor. Prosecutors say she had sex with an 18-year-old student in May last year. She resigned her job at Washington High School soon after the incident.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City police say a homeless woman arrested after cocaine was found in her purse told authorities it was baking soda. Forty-one-year-old Charnise McCambry was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over Sunday night. A plastic baggie with a white substance was found inside McCambry’s purse after a K9 officer detected narcotics.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa women’s basketball team has earned a berth in the NCAA tournament for the sixth year in a row. The Hawkeyes are a Number 9 seed and will host eighth-seeded Miami on Sunday. The winner will likely face top seeded Notre Dame on Tuesday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa State Women to face Gonzaga in NCAA Tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa State women’s basketball team is headed to the NCAA tournament for the seventh year in a row. The Cyclones are a No. 5 seed, but they will have to face 12th-seeded Gonzaga on the road on Saturday. The winner will play either fourth-seeded Georgia or Montana. Iowa State has won 23 games so far this year. The Cyclones finished second in the Big 12 regular season standings and in the conference tournament, falling to top-seeded Baylor 75-47.

Iowa State has dropped its last two first-round games in the NCAA tournament. The Cyclones lost to Wisconsin-Green Bay in the opening round in 2012. Gonzaga has reached the regional semifinals in each of the last three seasons.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa women’s basketball team has earned a berth in the NCAA tournament for the sixth year in a row. The Hawkeyes (20-12) are a No. 9 seed and will host eighth-seeded Miami (21-10) on Sunday. The winner will likely face No. 1 seed Notre Dame on Tuesday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Fighting Irish face 16th-seeded Tennessee-Martin in the other first-round matchup Sunday in Iowa City. Iowa has been inconsistent all season, winning seven straight at one point and also losing five in a row. But the Hawkeyes also beat six ranked opponents and finished with a strong RPI. Notre Dame (31-1) is the Big East champion. The Irish, whose only loss is to No. 1 Baylor, beat Connecticut for the league title.

JIM R. BURNETT, 76, of Earlham died Sun., Mar., 17th at the Madison County Hospital in Winterset. A memorial service for JIM R. BURNETT will be held at 5:00 PM Fri., Mar., 22nd at the Johnson Family Funeral Home In Earlham.

A time of fellowship will follow the service.

Narcotics arrest in Bedford

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office reports a search warrant for narcotics executed Sunday at a residence in Bedford, resulted in the arrest of one person on a felony drug charge.

Deputies from the Taylor County assisted the Bedford Police Department in executing the search warrant at a home in the 200 block of Pearl Street, in Bedford. As result of the investigation and search warrant by the Tri-County Narcotics and Bedford Police, Donald Lee Barrett was charged with Possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (a class D felony). Barrett was being held in the Adams County Jail on $5,000 cash bond.  Also assisting in the search warrant were Adams County Sheriff and Lenox Police Department.

Two Vehicle Accident with no Injuries

Police in Red Oak responded to a two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon. The accident happened in the 700 Block of West 2nd Street, when  22-year old Lorena Olarte-Hernandez of Red Oak was backing her 1999 Dodge Dakota out of a parking space and onto the street. In the process, her pickup hit a 2005 Ford Taurus being driven by 50-year old Shelly Shuffler of Red Oak. No injuries were reported.

Olarte-Hernandez was issued a warning for unsafe backing and was also issued a citation for Operation of a Motor Vehicle with No Driver’s License and a citation for Failure to Provide Security Against Liability (Accident Related). Damage to Olarte-Hernandez’s vehicle amounted to $200, while damage to Shuffler’s vehicle was estimated at $4,000.

Omaha VA hospital operating room problems

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The Omaha Veterans Affairs hospital is referring surgeries elsewhere in the city because of humidifier problems in its operating rooms. VA officials say the rooms have been temporarily shut down and will remain out of service until the humidifiers are fixed or replaced. The hospital performs about 300 surgeries a month. The VA says the rooms have been checked for mold problems, but none was detected.

Two arrested on drug charges in Mills County

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports two people were arrested on drug over nearly the past two-weeks. Last Friday, 49-year old Daniel Duane Johnston, of Omaha, was arrested near the intersection of Highway 34 and Deacon Road. Johnston was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. His bond was set at $1,000.

And, on March 9th, deputies in Mills County arrested 47-year old Leann Kay Rigatuso, of Glenwood. Rigatuso faces a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance/Methamphetamine – 2nd offense. She was arrested in Glenwood and released two days later on $2,000 bond.
