Garcia throws 8 innings as Cardinals top Nationals

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Jaime Garcia pitched eight sharp innings Wednesday and the St. Louis Cardinals topped a split squad of Washington Nationals 10-1 Wednesday. Garcia allowed one run and six hits, walking none and striking out eight. The Nationals’ lineup didn’t include anyone on its projected 25-man roster — the Washington starters had combined for only 20 at-bats this spring training going into the afternoon.

Midway through the game, most of the Cardinals’ regulars already had three at-bats, prompting manager Mike Matheny to call over to the minor league side of the complex for extra players as substitutes.

AP source: Wainwright, Cards strike $97.5M deal

UNDATED (AP) — Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals have agreed to a new contract that guarantees the Cardinals’ ace an additional $97.5 million over five years through 2018. Wainwright had been eligible to become a free agent after the World Series. The new agreement, first reported by foxsports.com, was confirmed by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because it had not yet been announced. The Cardinals scheduled a news conference for Thursday at their spring training camp in Jupiter, Fla.

A 31-year-old right-hander, Wainwright was 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA last year after missing the Cardinals’ World Series championship season in 2011 because of elbow surgery. Wainwright was 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA in 2010 and was an NL All-Star.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Dubuque businessman Rod Blum says he’ll run for the GOP nomination in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District. Blum announced his plans yesterday. He lost the Republican nomination for the seat in 2012 to attorney Ben Lange. The seat will be open in 2014 because Democratic Representative Bruce Braley has announced his intent to seek the Senate seat being vacated by longtime U.S. Senator Tom Harkin.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A decision on whether to close four Girl Scout camps in eastern Iowa is off the table after a strong community backlash. The Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois announced yesterday it will not vote on whether to sell the camps in Scott County, Dubuque County, Des Moines County and Allamakee County. Citizens reacted to the possibility of the camps closing by filing an injunction Friday against letting the organization vote on the matter.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at a county jail in western Iowa. The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office says 35-year-old Anthony Josta of Sioux City was found unconscious Tuesday night in his cell at the Woodbury County Jail. An autopsy is scheduled today.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Iowa ends Virginia’s home winning streak, 75-64

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Roy Devyn Marble scored 24 points and Iowa ended Virginia’s 19-game home winning streak with a 75-64 victory in the NIT quarterfinals on Wednesday night, earning the Hawkeyes a trip to Madison Square Garden. Marble’s 3-pointer with 13:02 to play gave Iowa (24-12) a 42-41 lead and sparked a 19-5 run that also featured six points inside from Adam Woodbury and 3-pointers by Josh Oglesby and Zach McCabe. McCabe’s finished the run, putting the Hawkeyes ahead 58-46 with 5:18 to play.

Justin Anderson scored a career-high 24 points to lead Virginia (23-12), but the Cavaliers had no answer once the Hawkeyes took charge. It was only the second home loss for the Cavaliers, and both denied them a trip to New York. The first came against Delaware in the Preseason NIT, also with a trip to Madison Square Garden on the line, and had been Virginia’s last home loss.

Senate backs tougher rules for teen drivers

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s teen drivers would face tougher rules under a bill that passed the Senate. Senators approved the legislation in a 41-8 vote Wednesday. Under the plan from Democratic Sen. Tod Bowman, drivers under the age of 18 would need to hold a learner’s permit for a full year before getting a license.

Teen drivers also would not be able to transport more than one unrelated minor, unless they are with a parent, guardian or driving instructor, for the first six months they hold a license. Parents could sign a waiver so the passenger rules would not apply to their kids. Bowman says teen drivers are far more accident-prone than older motorists. The bill now moves the House where lawmakers must provide approval.

Road construction to reroute CCMH traffic

Officials with the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, say due to construction, the west, 10th Street entrance to CCMH will be closed Thursday, March 28th from 10 am – 3 pm. Patients and visitors will need to use the north atrium entrance or the east entrance at the back of the building during those hours.

Controversial Iowa voting rule goes into effect

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A new rule backed by Secretary of State Matt Schultz is taking effect that allows election officials to remove people from voter registration lists if their citizenship is questioned.  Schultz, a Republican, says the change is needed to reduce voter fraud, which he’s made his key issue since taking office in 2011.

The rule effective Wednesday allows Schultz’s office to compare voter registration records against federal immigration lists. Anyone registered to vote flagged as a noncitizen is notified by mail that they may be unlawfully registered and should provide citizenship proof.

Opponents have unsuccessfully fought enactment of the rule. They say it intimidates immigrants who are citizens and may discourage them from voting.  The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa says it will continue to fight the rule in court.

Travis Olsen Commits to AIB Golf Program

Des Moines, Iowa –AIB College of Business men’s golf coach Tony Giannetto has announced the signing of Travis Olsen to a National Letter of Intent to attend the college next fall and compete for the men’s golf program.

Travis, the son of Tad and Sarah Olsen, is a native of Atlantic, Iowa, and will graduate from Atlantic High School this spring. Olsen, is a four-time letter winner, received First-Team All-Conference honors in the Hawkeye 10 conference.
“Travis will be a great addition AIB and the golf program,” Giannetto said.  “He student-athlete committed to the both game and classroom.”

Olsen plans to major in Business Administration at AIB.

Iowa House OKs crossbow deer hunting for residents

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa House has approved a measure that would allow expanded crossbow hunting of deer.  Lawmakers unanimously passed the bill Wednesday and it now moves to the Senate. The measure would let residents hunt deer using a crossbow during the late hunting season, from Dec. 17 to Jan. 10. They would not be required to purchase a separate crossbow hunting license.

Under current law, only muzzleloader and archery hunters can hunt deer during that season. But a physically disabled person incapable of shooting a bow and arrow can get a special crossbow license to hunt deer and turkey.

Department of Natural Resources spokesman Kevin Baskins says if the legislation passes he doesn’t expect an increase in crossbow hunters to significantly reduce the state’s deer population.
