Google expects to invest another $400-million into its Council Bluffs facility

News

April 23rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the search engine giant “Google” say the company will likely invest another $400 million into its data center in Council Bluffs, bringing the company’s total investment in the center to $1.5 billion. The Daily NonPareil says a filing with the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IAEDA) indicates Google is pursuing an additional $400 million expansion. The Mountain View, CA-based Google, spent $600 million to open a data center in 2009 in the Lake Manawa area, then launched a $300 million expansion a year ago aided by state tax incentives. Last November, the had company announced that it was investing another $200 million in expansion.

Google, a year ago, won approval of state tax incentives of up to $9.6 million for the $300 million expansion, which would create 50 jobs. Its latest filing is seeking to add $400 million on top of that. It asks to boost the state tax credits to the company to $16.8 million. How many jobs that would create was not indicated.

IAEDA scheduled to vote this morning in Des Moines on amending its tax incentive agreement with Google.

Atlantic School Board tables bond petitions

News

April 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic Board of Education was expecting to receive and accept petitions calling for a bond referendum during their meeting tonight (Monday), but the matter was instead tabled. Superintendent Mike Amstein said that was because the committee responsible for gathering the petitions wanted more time to get information out to the public in an effective manner. Amstein said the committee felt they couldn’t do that in the short amount of time the current election might be held. They requested the Board table the matter until a decision can be made on when the issue moves forward. The petitions are with regard to an $11-million dollar bond referendum for Capital Improvement Projects. Because the School Board took no action on the petitions, a Resolution ordering a special election on the issuance of $11-million worth of General Obligation School Bonds, was also tabled.  A tentative vote on the referendum was set to take place June 25th.

Sports

April 22nd, 2013 by Jim Field

The Big 12 wants to have a greater postseason presence in Florida and get into more bowls that its fans can reach by car.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says the conference would like to have agreements with five or six bowl games.

All the major college football conferences are about to ramp up negotiations with bowl organizers as they try to put together postseason lineups for 2014 and beyond.

Bowlsby and the other nine major conference commissioners, along with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, will meet in southern California this week to pick to the final three bowls to be involved in the six-site playoff rotation. Once those are in place, the conferences can turn their attention to the other bowls.
