Hail pelts and pounds Audubon County Sat. night

Hail ranging in size from nickels to quarters pelted and pounded parts of Audubon County late Saturday night. Just before 11-p.m., one-inch diameter hail was reported to the National Weather Service by law enforcement in Audubon. About 30-minutes later, severe storm spotters reported nickel-to pea-sized hail was falling 10 miles northwest of the Audubon Airport. There were no immediate reports of damage early this (Sunday) morning.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued late last night for northern Audubon County, southern Carroll County and northwestern Guthrie County, for the storm system as it passed through the area.

The storm also dumped heavy rain in parts of Iowa. Parts of Jasper, Marshall and Poweshiek Counties in east central Iowa received four-to six-inches of rain overnight, causing some roads to be flooded. The Weather Service said a total of six-to eight-inches of rain was possible in eastern Iowa through early this morning. A Flood Warning was in effect for Jasper, Marshall and Poweeshiek counties this morning.

At around 5:30-a.m., storm spotters reported sand bagging efforts were underway to protect the Kellogg water treatment plant and fire department. 4-a.m., law enforcement officials in Jasper County reported water was covering the road at Illinois Avenue and Highway 6, near Kellogg. Parts of Northfield Drive were under water, with one house surrounding by water. Law enforcement reported also that flooding was occurring in the Oakland Acres area of Jasper County, with Highway 6 under water, and closed with stalled cars.

For the KJAN listening area, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 9-a.m. The Watch includes Audubon, Guthrie, Crawford, Carroll, Sac and Dallas Counties.

Dodgers blow 2-run lead but beat Cardinals 5-3

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adrian Gonzalez homered and drove in three runs, Mark Ellis lined a go-ahead double in the sixth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated St. Louis 5-3 on Saturday to snap the Cardinals’ three-game winning streak. The last-place Dodgers, who had lost five of seven, blew a two-run lead before Ellis’ two-out hit off Seth Maness (3-1) scored Carl Crawford from first base to make it 4-3.

Paco Rodriguez (1-2) earned his first major league victory, getting three outs on 10 pitches. Brandon League worked the ninth to earn his 10th save in 12 chances. The NL Central-leading Cardinals tied the game at 3 on David Freese’s broken-bat RBI double and Pete Kozma’s infield single in the sixth. Nick Punto made a diving stop behind third base, but he couldn’t throw out Kozma.

DAYTON, Iowa (AP) — The search continued yesterday for a missing Iowa teenager, despite rain and wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour. It’s been five days since 15-year-old Kathlynn Shepard and her 12-year-old friend were abducted from their school bus stop on Monday. The younger girl escaped, but Kathlynn has not been found. Police have said 42-year-old Michael Klunder abducted the girls in Dayton, about 60 miles north of Des Moines, and committed suicide hours later.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials will be releasing water from Lost Grove Lake near Davenport in the next few weeks so work can be finished on one of three boat ramps. The Quad-City Times reports that anglers won’t welcome the news, as they’re eager to fish the eastern Iowa lake already stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish, and other species.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A man has undergone surgery after being shot in the groin during an argument. Police tell the Des Moines Register that the man was shot in the groin during an argument Friday night on the east side of town. Police say the shooter drove away after the shooting and has not yet been found.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An elected official in eastern Iowa is the recipient of a White House honor given to openly gay, lesbian and transgendered public officials. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that Johnson County Recorder Kim Painter was one of 10 openly LGBT public officials from across the country to receive the White House’s Champion of Change honor Wednesday.

ERMA CHALFANT, 88, of Guthrie Center , died Fri., May 24th, at the Guthrie County Hospital. Funeral services for ERMA CHALFANT will be held 10:30-a.m. Fri., May 31st, at the 1st United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 4-to 8-pm Thu., May 30th.

Burial will be in the Union Cemetery at Guthrie Center.

PHYLLIS A. TAYLOR, 87, of Atlantic , died Fri., May 24th, at the Heritage House in Atlantic. Memorial graveside services for PHYLLIS TAYLOR will be held 10:30-a.m. Tue., May 28th, at the Grant Cemetery, in Grant. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

6th Annual Western Iowa No-till (WIN) Field Day is near

Officials with the ISU Extension Service say the 6th Annual Western Iowa No-till (WIN) Demonstration Field Day, scheduled for June 11th at the Carstens 1880 Farmstead south of Shelby, will address a wide variety of topics for anyone interested in learning more about practical application and trouble-shooting for no-till production. The day starts at 8-a.m., when registration and vendor displays open. A wide variety of local agribusinesses will be on hand to visit with producers in the morning and demonstrate their services/equipment.

The field day begins at 9-a.m., with breakout sessions covering common challenges of corn-on-corn no-till and an overview of recent Iowa Soybean Association trials on deep ripping and nitrogen placement. The breakout sessions will be followed by a weather outlook for the coming crop year, and a lunchtime discussion on the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy. After lunch, keynote speaker Neil Harl will present “A Look Ahead for Agriculture: Major Concerns on the Horizon”. Lunch will be provided free of charge to all in attendance, including steak sandwiches grilled by the Pottawattamie County Cattlemen. The day will wrap up with a presentation on achieving success in long-term no-till and cover crop usage from an Iowa producer perspective.

Anyone with an interest in the practical application of no-till production, whether looking for ideas to begin adopting no-till practices or a long-time no-till producer looking to improve production results, is encouraged to attend this daylong educational event. In addition to the educational sessions at the 2013 WIN Field Day, there will be plenty of time for farmers to visit informational displays, vendor exhibits and network with other producers. 4 hours of CCA Credits have been applied for, and will be available at no cost for Certified Crop Advisors needing additional continuing education units this year.

There is no charge to attend this event, but pre-registration is requested by June 6th to ensure a lunch will be available. Registration can be completed by e-mailing csgorham@iastate.edu or by calling the Harrison County Extension Office at 888-644-2105.
