CHICAGO (AP) — Yadier Molina hit a three-run homer in St. Louis’ four-run ninth inning, and the Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 10-6 on Sunday night in the majors’ final game before the All-Star break.

Allen Craig lined a tiebreaking RBI single into left field before Molina drove an 0-2 pitch from Kevin Gregg (2-2) over the wall in left for his seventh homer. Craig and Molina tuned up for Tuesday’s game in New York with four hits apiece, helping St. Louis to a season-high 21 hits overall.

Chicago went up 4-3 on Darwin Barney’s three-run homer in the sixth and pinch hitter Cody Ransom had a tying two-run double in the eighth, but the Cubs’ bullpen was unable to hold off the NL’s highest-scoring team.

Five community college systems asking voters to re-up on property tax levies

News

July 15th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

All 15 Iowa community colleges are partially financed with property tax revenue and officials from five of the systems have placed their school’s “facilities” levy on the ballot for the September 10th school board elections. Tom Lesan is a vice president at Southwestern Community College in Creston, one of the schools asking area voters to approve the property tax levy. “For Southwestern, it generates just under $500,000 every year that can be spent for physical infrastructure, so buildings, parking lots, sidewalks — that kind of thing,” Lesen says. “It cannot be used for salaries.”

The first building on the school’s Creston campus opened in 1970. In 1985, an attendance center was opened in Red Oak. Eleven years ago another attendance center opened in Osceola. Lesan says his community college would have a hard time keeping its facilities in shape without this property tax levy. “You can’t charge enough tuition to the students to take care of all the buildings and put in parking lots and in Red Oak specifically, you know, we remodeled an old skating rink and that’s the money we used to be able to do that, Now, we built onto that building with a private donation, but the original remodel, the parking lot — all of that was done with money that is generated by the plant fund.”

The college has purchased space on area billboards, advertising the property tax levy vote in the upcoming election, plus Lesan and other college officials are traveling around the area, speaking to civic groups about the vote. Lesan says Southwestern can’t afford complacency on the referendum. “We’ve passed it every time we’ve voted it,” Lesan says. “You know, I really don’t expect there to be a big problem, but we’re also not going to take it for granted. We’re going to get out and we’re going to talk to a lot of different groups and remind them that 10 years ago we did this and 10 years before that we did it and 10 years before that we did it and it’s just something we have to do and get it out there in front of people so they’ll know what they’re voting on and they’ll feel a lot more comfortable voting yes.”

The levy needs a simple majority in order to pass and is in force for 10 years. In addition to Southwestern, voters in the following areas will be asked to vote on a facilities levy for their local community college: Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs and Southeastern Community College in Burlington. The other 10 colleges have had facilities levies approved within the last five years.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – The Arkansas Travelers are set to face 2005 National League Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter as the former St. Louis Cardinals’ ace makes a rehab start for the Double-A Springfield Cardinals.  Carpenter is trying to work his way back from nerve issues that have sidelined the 38-year-old right-hander since before the start of spring training and put his career in jeopardy.

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny has said Carpenter will be limited to a pitch count in the “60s-range” when he starts Monday’s game in Springfield against Arkansas. Carpenter gets one month before a decision must be made about if he’ll play in the majors this season.

Monday’s game is to start shortly after 7 p.m. in Springfield.

Neb. nuclear plant remains offline for repairs

News

July 14th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant has missed another target date for restarting, so the Omaha Public Power District might have to endure another summer of buying electricity to meet peak demand. OPPD officials say they’ve addressed most of what regulators want them to do at the idle nuclear plant, but the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says more work remains.

The plant, which sits across from Iowa on the Missouri River about 20 miles north of Omaha, has been closed since April 2011. It initially shut down for routine maintenance, but significant flooding in 2011 and a series of safety violations forced it to remain closed.

OPPD spokesman Jeff Hanson says repairs and inspections at Fort Calhoun are taking longer than expected. But so far the work remains within budget.

Public hearing Monday on smoke free park in Atlantic

July 14th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A public hearing with regard to making Sunnyside Park in Atlantic entirely smoke free, will take place Monday evening, at City Hall. The meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board and public hearing follows on the heels of a proposal June 17th by Karla Akers and a group of young people who are associated with the Kiwanis’-sponsored, Middle School Builders Club.Akers said originally, the tobacco-free zone request focused on the skate park area at Sunnyside Park, but the hope is to eventually make all parks in Cass County being tobacco free, to make them “A family friendly, safe, positive environment for healthy activity.”

To that end, Akers presented the Parks and Rec Board with a signed petition requesting Sunnyside Park be designated as Tobacco Free. If approved by the Parks and Rec Board and, by the City Council at a future meeting, violators will be asked to stop using tobacco products on Park property, or leave the property. If they fail to do so, a trespassing complaint may be filed with law enforcement.

In other business, the Parks and Rec Board will receive a monthly update from Director Roger Herring, with regard to the Schildberg Recreation Area, Sunny Park Tennis Court reconstruction, the boat ramp, Summer Rec programs, the Buck Creek Dog Park, and Park Maintenance building. The meeting in the Council’s Chambers at City Hall, begins at 5:15-p.m., Monday.
