AT 208 PM CDT…DOPPLER RADAR WAS TRACKING A STRONG THUNDERSTORM NEAR PAPILLION…OR 10 MILES SOUTH OF OMAHA…MOVING NORTHEAST AT 45 MPH. ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP THROUGH 300 PM OVER EASTERN PARTS OF THE METRO AREA INTO WESTERN IOWA.

HALF INCH HAIL AND WINDS IN EXCESS OF 40 MPH WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH THIS STORM.

Stakeholders uncertain about future of dog racing

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Greyhound breeders, casino operators and others are awaiting word on whether Gov. Terry Branstad will sign a bill approved by the Legislature that would end racing in Council Bluffs and limit the sport in Dubuque. Earlier this week, Branstad was noncommittal about signing the legislation. He must make a decision by June 1.

The uncertainty has been difficult for breeders such as Melissa Schmidt, of Bellevue. She wonders what will happen to her dogs and her business. The Legislature overwhelmingly approved the bill, which requires casinos in Council Bluffs and Dubuque to pay $72 million. Half the money would go toward a fund for breeders, trainers and shelters. The rest would finance continued racing in Dubuque by the Iowa Greyhound Association.

IONE JOHNSTON, 82, of Stuart, died Thu., May 8th, at Mercy Hospice, in Johnston. Funeral services for IONE JOHNSTON will be held 10:30-a.m. Tue., May 13th, at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 6-to 8-pm on Mon., May 12th.

Burial will be in the South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart.

NANCY YOUNG, 77, of Oakland, died May 7th, at her home in Oakland. Memorial services for NANCY YOUNG will be held on Thu., June 5th at 11-a.m., at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Rieken-Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 from 5-7:30 PM at the Oakland United Methodist Church.

Interment will be at a later date.

NANCY YOUNG is survived by:

Her husband – Ward Young,  of Oakland.

Her children – David (Mary) Young, of Williamsburg; Susan (Mark) Beedle, of Oakland; Peter Young, of Oakland, and Bryan (Elizabeth) Young, of Washington, D.C..

Her brothers – Dean (Joyce) Heller, and Tom (Mary) Heller.

Her sister – Anne Heller.

DOUGLAS “DOUG” BRYAN MILLER, 37, of  Cumberland (formerly of Council Bluffs), died Monday, May 5th, following an accident near Cumberland. Funeral services for DOUG MILLER will be held Monday, May 12th at 11:00 am at the Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel Funeral Home in Council Bluffs (545 Willow Ave).

Visitation with the family will be held at the funeral home on Sunday (5/11), from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

Interment Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors.

A lunch will follow the funeral service at the Walnut Hill Reception Center, 1350 E. Pierce St., Council Bluffs.

The family will direct memorials.
