Rice scores twice as Drake beats Stetson 27-15

DELAND, Fla. (AP) — Andy Rice ran for two touchdowns and Drake concluded its 11th consecutive winning season with a 27-15 victory over Stetson on Saturday. Rice’s two touchdown runs were the first and last scores of the game, his 1-yarder with 4:52 left in the game concluding a 21-play, 90-yard drive. Rice was also 18-of-27 passing for 189 yards.

Conley Wilkins added 81 yards rushing on 16 carries, including a 7-yard run that capped a 13-play, 97-yard drive to give the Bulldogs (7-4, 6-2 Pioneer) the lead for good at 14-8 early in the second quarter. Spencer Lee added two field goals for a 20-8 halftime advantage.

Ryan Tentler threw 64 yards to Darius McGriff for a Stetson touchdown and Cole Mazza ran 1 yard for the other. Tentler was 14 of 22 for 225 yards with an interception for the Hatters (5-7, 3-5), who also lost two fumbles.

Northern Iowa defeats North Florida 66-49

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Seth Tuttle had 19 points on 7-of-7 shooting and added five rebounds to lead Northern Iowa to a 66-49 win over North Florida on Saturday. Paul Jesperson finished with 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and Wes Washpun added 10 points for Northern Iowa (4-0). Jalen Nesbitt had 15 points and four steals, going 6 of 8 at the free-throw line, and Demarcus Daniels added 10 points North Florida (1-3).

Wyatt Lohaus hit a 3-pointer early in the game to cap an 18-0 start by Northern Iowa, but North Florida responded with a 12-3 run. The Panthers took a 33-18 lead into halftime. In the second half, Jalen Nesbitt had four free throws as a part of a 7-2 Ospreys run, but Northern Iowa responded with a 16-4 run including seven points from Tuttle.

Western Michigan 91, Drake 75.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) – Connar Tava had 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds to lead Western Michigan to a 91-75 win over Drake on Saturday.  Tucker Haymond had 24 points and three assists, including a pair of 3s and David Brown added 14 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals for Western Michigan (3-0). Reed Timmer had 23 points and Chris Caird added 13 points for Drake (0-3).

Timmer scored 16 points in the first half to put Drake up 46-41 at halftime, but Western Michigan responded in the second half.  Haymond converted a layup while being fouled midway through the second half to cap a 19-2 run, which put the Western Michigan up 60-50. The Broncos made eight of their final 11 shots, including seven-straight points by Haymond to close it out.

KATHLEEN MOORHEAD, 61, of Booneville (formerly of Casey), died Fri., Nov. 21st, at the Stuart Community Care Center. Funeral services for KATHLEEN MOORHEAD will be held 10:30-a.m. Tue., Nov. 25th, at the Casey United Methodist Church. Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart has the arrangements.

1st reading of new Mowing Ordinance expected in Atlantic

The Atlantic City Council will get a jump on the next mowing season during their next regular meeting, when they act on the first reading of a new “Mowing of PropertiesOrdinance. The ordinance requires “Any property in the City of Atlantic, whether vacated or non-vacated….to be mowed when the vegetation reaches a height of more than 12 inches by the first and the fifteenth day of the month in May, June, July, August, September, and October.”

If the property owner fails to comply, the City, or its agents, may mow any property, by the aforementioned dates, and charge $75-per hour to do so. In addition, a surcharge of $100 will be charged to the property owner. The Ordinance says “Any property owners who fail to mow their properties, thus allowing the same to be mowed by the City or their agents, and who do not provide payment for the mowing as required, will be assessed by the City for such costs, which will be collected in the same manner as general property taxes.”

Any billings for mowing done by the City or its agents will be sent by regular mail and are payable within 30 days of the billing date. The ordinance will go into effect from and after its final passage, approval, and publication as provided by law.

NW Iowa man is arrested after threatening White House

AKRON, Iowa (AP) – Police have arrested a 37-year-old Akron man after they say he twice threatened to blow up the White House. The Sioux City Journal report that the man called the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office Thursday afternoon and asked to speak with sheriff. Authorities say that when the man was told he would have to leave a message for the sheriff, he told the dispatcher he was going to blow up the White House.

Federal and local authorities went to the man’s home Thursday evening to investigate the threat. Investigators say after the man again threatened to blow up the White House and to kill the investigators, he was arrested.

Crash leads to diesel spill in western Iowa

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – Crews were busy cleaning up a 100-gallon diesel spill in western Iowa’s Council Bluffs following a collision between a pickup and semitrailer. Authorities tell the Daily Nonpareil  that the crash happened Friday afternoon on the westbound Interstate 80 ramp going into Omaha, Nebraska from the South Expressway. Investigators say the pickup hit the semi’s fuel tank.

Assistant Council Bluffs Fire Chief Matt Thomas says the fire department assisted until a cleanup crew out of Omaha was hired by the company that employed the semi driver. Thomas says neither driver was injured.

Fatal accident in Audubon County Saturday morning

An accident early this (Saturday) morning in Audubon County, has claimed the life of an Audubon man. The Audubon County Sheriff’s Department says authorities received a report at around 1:30-a.m., about an accident in the 200 block of 190th Street, about 3-miles northeast of Audubon. When deputies arrived, they found a wrecked pickup truck and the driver, 19-year old Matthew Terry Sunberg, of Audubon, deceased.

The accident remains under investigation. The sheriff’s department was assisted by Audubon Fire and Rescue, officers with the Audubon Police Department, and Audubon County Medical Examiner’s Office.
