BETTY HUDDLESON, 86, of Fontanelle, died Sun., Feb. 15th, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle. Funeral services for BETTY HUDDLESON will be held 10:30-a.m. Thu., Feb. 19th, at the Fontanelle United Methodist Church. Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is open from 2-until 8-p.m., Wednesday (2/18), with the family present from 6-until 8-pm. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial will be in the Fontanelle Cemetery, with a luncheon to be held at the church following the committal services at the cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Life Care Pregnancy Center or the free Medical Center.

 BETTY HUDDLESON is survived by:

Her children – Marvel and husband Robert Blazek of Prescott, Steven and wife Risa Huddleson of Orient, Patricia Reeves of Greenfield and Ethel and husband Jack Farlow of Creston.

Her sister – Ila Jacobs, of Davenport.

16 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren, her in-laws, other relatives and friends.

(Update) 6 injured – 3 critically – during crash Friday night in C.Bluffs

In an update to our report Sunday morning, Police in Council Bluffs have released more information about a three-vehicle, head-on crash Friday evening that happened when the driver of a mini-van blacked-out, causing the van to cross lanes and strike a vehicle that spun-out and hit another. The crash resulted in numerous injuries. According to the Police report, officers, along with the Council Bluffs Fire Department to the crash in the 1600 block of West Broadway at 10:16-p.m., Friday.

Officials say 77-year old Meredith Robinson, of Omaha, was driving a Chrysler Town and Country mini-van when he passed out at the wheel, as he was traveling eastbound on west Broadway. The vehicle crossed into the westbound lanes of traffic and struck a Hyundai Elantra, driven by 51-year old Cassondra McCaune, of Des Moines. Her car spun around and hit a westbound Honda CRV, driven by 59-year old Mary Horan-Cummings, of Council Bluffs.

Horan-Cummings, who was wearing her seat belt, was not injured. Cassondra McCaune suffered critical injuries in the crash. Three other people in the car, all from Des Moines, were injured, as well. 29-year old Heather McCaune and 16-year old Kala McCaune, both suffered minor injuries. 63-year old Robert McCaune, suffered critical injuries. All four were transported to Creighton CHI in Omaha for treatment. Cassondra and Robert McCaune were wearing their seatbelts.

Robinson suffered minor injuries also. His passenger, 84-year old Bertha Weinfurtner, of Carter Lake, was critically injured. Both were transported to Nebraska Medicine for treatment. Authorities say the pair was wearing their seatbelts.

Witnesses indicated that speed may be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

No. 14 Iowa women cruise past Indiana 81-64

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Melissa Dixon scored 15 points, including four 3-pointers, and Number 14 Iowa cruised past Indiana 81-64 Sunday. Dixon eclipsed 300 career 3-pointers (303) in the win. It was Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder’s 299th win in her 15th season with the program.

Indiana led 18-17 on Karlee McBride’s 3-pointer midway through the first half. Iowa answered with a 16-2 run — punctuated by Ally Disterhoft’s trey with 2:14 left in the frame — to put the Hawkeyes up 33-20, en route to a 35-26 lead at the break. Iowa (20-4, 11-12 Big Ten) took control early in the second. Disterhoft started a 15-4 run with a jumper and ended it with a 3-pointer that lifted the Hawkeyes to an 18-point lead.

Disterhoft finished with 13 points and has scored in double figures in 39 of her 42 career starts. Samantha Logic had 11 points and 11 assists. Jess Walter led Indiana (14-10, 4-9) with 18 points.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Closing some of Iowa’s four state mental hospitals might be needed, but people who work in the field warn that any changes should be made carefully. The Des Moines Register reports Governor Terry Branstad said last month he plans to close state mental institutions at Clarinda and Mount Pleasant and move any remaining patients to the other two state institutions this summer.

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (AP) — South Sioux City is still waiting for nearly $1.4 million in reimbursement from state and federal agencies almost four years after extensive flooding along the Missouri River. The Sioux City Journal reports city officials are still working to finish up the last paperwork needed to obtain reimbursement for flood-related expenses.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A new downtown Sioux City casino has announced plans to convert a grass-covered outdoor spot into a hard surface that will be used for outdoor events, such as concerts, as well as more parking. The Sioux City Journal reports that the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in downtown Sioux City plans new landscaping, decorative street lamps, a beer garden, an expanded restaurant patio and a barrier to control concert noise also are part of the $850,000 project awaiting city approval.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Two Californians are accused of using fake credit cards and identification in a scheme to defraud Iowa banks and credit unions. The Sioux City Journal reports the 45-year-old man and 53-year-old woman were arrested Thursday.

Northwestern beats Iowa 66-61 in OT, snaps 10-game slide

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Bryant McIntosh scored 18 points and Northwestern ended a 10-game losing streak with a 66-61 overtime victory over Iowa after the Hawkeyes’ Jarrod Uthoff nailed a 3 at the end of regulation on Sunday afternoon. Tre Demps scored 16 and Alex Olah had 11 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for the Wildcats (11-14, 2-10).

Uthoff, who scored a career-high 25 points for Iowa (15-10, 6-6 Big Ten), nailed an off-balance 3 from the wing at the end of regulation even though Vic Law was all over him. But the Wildcats scored seven straight in overtime, ending their longest slide since they dropped 12 in a row in the 1999-2000 season.

No. 13 Northern Iowa hits 12 3s to beat Missouri State 68-57

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Seth Tuttle scored 22 points and No. 13 Northern Iowa matched its season-high with 12 3-pointers to beat Missouri State 68-57 on Sunday. The Panthers (24-2, 13-1 Missouri Valley Conference) shot 57 percent from the field (16 of 28) in the first-half, including nine of 14 from 3-point range. Northern Iowa had 14 assists and led 42-20 at the half. The lead stretched to 49-23 with 17:40 to go before Missouri State made a late push.

Jeremy Morgan and Deon Mitchell added 11 points apiece in the win for the Panthers. Camyn Boone scored 14 points for Missouri State (9-17, 3-11 MVC), which lost for the 10th time in its last 11 games. The victory stretched Northern Iowa’s win streak to 13-games —the fifth-longest current streak in the nation_and pulled the Panthers even for first-place in the Missouri Valley with Wichita State.

Area school board meetings set for Monday

A trio of area school district Boards of Education are set to meet Monday evening. In Anita, the CAM School Board meeting gets underway at 5:30-p.m., in the High School Media Center. On their agenda is a report on Assessment data, along with a discussion of questions posed by the Adair-Casey School Board,who sent sent letters to neighboring districts with regard to possible Whole Grade Sharing opportunities (The Adair-Casey Board is set to meet Wednesday evening to the discuss related matters).

The CAM School Board will also: Set the time & date for a public hearing on an early start date for the 2015-16 school year; act on…a Driver’s Education contract & student fees, audit bids; and receive the CAM Education Association’s opening proposal. The Board will hold an exempt session for negotiations, prior to adjourning for the evening.

The Griswold School Board is set to meet at 5:45-p.m., in the Central Office Board Room. On their agenda is action on: The second reading of Board Policies;a Fully Automated Timing System (FAT) for the track; Lawn Chemical application bids; Lawn mowing specifications; the 20-15-16 School Calendar; Sports lighting bids; and, Insurance specifications. They’ll also hold a Financial Work Session for discussion purposes only.

And, in Elk Horn, the Exira-EHK School Board will meet beginning at 7-p.m., Monday, in the Family and Consumer Science room at the High School. Action items include: Contracts with Tony Santisteban – Boy’s Varsity Track Coach, and Kelli Nielsen, Asst. Varsity Track Coach; Administrative matters (Including the Modified Allowable Growth/Dropout Prevention budget, and a Budget Guarantee for the 2015-16 School Year), and approval of the Baseball Scoreboard.

LEONA M. SLOSS, 88, of Guthrie Center, died Fri., Feb. 13th, at the New Homestead, in Guthrie Center. Funeral services for LEONA SLOSS will be held 11-a.m. Wed., Feb. 18th, at the 1st Christian Church in Guthrie Center. Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 10-until 11-a.m. Wed., at the 1st Christian Church (one-hour prior to the service).

Burial will be in the Union Cemetery at Guthrie Center.
