2 men arrested on drug charges this morning in Fremont County

A traffic stop early this (Tuesday) morning in Fremont County resulted in the arrest of two people on drug charges. Sheriff’s officials say 35-year old Thomas Lee Knipe, of Glenwood, and 43-year old Christopher Lynn Mosier, of Essex, were arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of numerous pieces of drug paraphernalia.

The men were taken into custody at around 2:15-a.m. in the 2300 block of Wabounsie Avenue. Knipe was being held in the Fremont County Jail on $2,000 cash bond, while Mosier’s bond was set at $1,000. Deputies in Fremont County were assisted at the scene by the Mills County K9 Unit.

Avoca’s Mike Stanley Recipient of IGHSAU’s Jack North Award

stanleyThe Jack North Award is the highest honor the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union awards to an individual. The award has been given just 15 times in the 87-year history of the IGHSAU. Mike Stanley of Avoca is the 16th recipient of the award.

Stanley has been active with the IGHSAU for many years. He served on the IGHSAU Representative Council and the IGHSAU Board of Directors from 1995 to 2004. Since his retirement, Stanley has been part of the bench crew at the State Basketball Tournament and is a diamond supervisor at the State Softball Tournament. He is also a member of the E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship jury.

Stanley, a native of Sidney, graduated from Tarkio College in 1970 and received his Master’s Degree from Northwest Missouri State. He served as teacher and school administrator at Carson-Macedonia, Midland, Underwood, Malvern and Bedford before his last stop at A-H-S-T, serving as the school’s athletic director and principal until his retirement in 2004.

Stanley has been recognized as one of the top track & field starters in Iowa, serving as a starter of over 30 Iowa State Track & Field Meets. He is a member of the Iowa Association of Track Officials Hall of Fame and the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Officials Hall of Fame. Stanley’s years of service as an activities director was also recognized by the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association, who inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2005.

Mike and his wife Michaele are the parents of three sons; Sean, Dave and Tim, and are grandparents to Mackenzie and Graham.

Red Oak man arrested Tue. morning

A traffic stop early this (Tuesday) morning in Montgomery County resulted in the arrest of 26-year old Rhyian Todd Hall, of Red Oak. Hall was taken into custody at around 2:50-a.m. on a charge of OWI/2nd offense. He was brought to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $2,000 cash bond.

February was 9th coldest and snowiest

State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says February will goes into the record books in the top ten in both cold and snow. Hillaker says the persistent cold is probably the thing that stands out the most about the month. “Actually only had five days where the statewide average temperature was above normal,” Hillaker says. Those were five consecutive days above normal from February 6th through the 10th. Temperatures really dropped at the end of the month.

“Our lowest temperatures of the month — actually for the whole winter — came on the last two days of February. Stanley, in Buchanan County in northeast Iowa got down to an official minus thirty degrees the morning of February 27, that’s actual temperature, not windchill,” Hillaker says, “and the next morning, Elkader in Clayton County, also got down to minus 30 degrees.” February was just a little snowier than normal.

Hillaker says most of the snow came in one storm at the beginning of the month, but overall it was the ninth snowiest and ninth coldest February. The state has kept weather records for 143 years. Overall the winter hasn’t been anything too out of the ordinary. “We are running just a little bit above normal in the snowfall, again thanks in large part to February,” Hillaker says. “So far this winter, about two-point-seven inches above normal for snowfall, which would put us at the 45th snowiest winter.”

Hillaker says winter’s worst is probably past us now as the days get longer with more sunlight heading into March.

Chiefs place franchise tag on All-Pro Houston

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have placed the franchise tag on All-Pro pass rusher Justin Houston. The Chiefs announced the move on Monday, saying in a statement that “it was in the best interest of the club” and it pursues a long-term deal with Houston. Monday’s move was widely expected given the relatively little progress Kansas City has made with Houston and his representatives on a long-term deal.

The two sides still have until July 15 to negotiate a contract, and it is not certain whether Houston will immediately sign his tender. As an outside linebacker, the one-year deal would earn him about $13.1 million for the upcoming season. The Chiefs likely will need to make additional moves soon to free up salary cap space.
