Wartburg opens the NCAA Division III playoffs at home on Saturday against Wisconsin-Platteville. These teams scrimmaged in the preseason and Wartburg coach Chris Winter says both teams have matured since then.
Winter says the style of play from Wisconsin-Platteville will be the same they saw in the scrimmage.
These teams have been scrimmaging in the preseason for more than a decade.
Winter says Wartburg’s playoff experience should help them manage what is expected to be cold conditions.
The Knights have made it to the national semifinals in each of the last two seasons.
(Radio Iowa) – Two dozen small and mid-sized farms, food processors and distributors in Iowa are receiving grants totaling nearly three million dollars aimed at strengthening local food supply chains. Giselle Bruskewitz is on the state steering committee for what’s called the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program that will invest nearly one million dollars into the state’s wholesale food hubs.
Bruskewitz says the program gives everyone more options.
The program is supported by the U-S Department of Agriculture with funding from the American Rescue Plan Act.
(Cumberland, Iowa) – Firefighters from Cumberland were dispatched to a house fire this (Wednesday) afternoon, at 901 Adams Street, in Cumberland. The call went out at 1:54-p.m. Cumberland Fire requested mutual aid from Massena Fire at around 2:08-p.m.
Initially, the Cass County Communications Center had reported some residents were out of the home but others remained, however, Cass County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Kennon told KJAN News two residents – a man and his wife did escape the home safely.
Kennon said a space heater is the suspected cause of the fire, which resulted in extensive damage to the home. Cumberland Fire Chief Jason Rouse said the house was a total loss. In addition to the firefighters and Mike Kennon, Cass EMS responded to the scene.
No injuries were reported. Fire crews returned to their stations at around 4-p.m. Cumberland Fire was recalled to the scene, when flames were reported to have rekindled at around 8:50-p.m., Wednesday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa linebacker Ed Miles will serve as honorary captain when the Hawkeyes host Nebraska in the Pioneer Heroes Game on Friday on Duke Slater Field at Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. (CT) and the contest will be televised on NBC and broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network.
Miles was a four-year letterman from 2003-06. While on the squad, the Hawkeyes won a Big Ten Championship (2004) and competed in four bowl games, including bowl wins in the Outback (2004) and Citrus (2005).
After redshirting in 2002, Miles played special teams and was recognized as an All-Big Ten freshman by Sporting News in 2003. He started two games at linebacker and was recognized as Iowa Special Teams Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2004. He was a starting linebacker his final two seasons, finishing his career with 186 tackles and four sacks.
Miles had a three-stint in the National Football League following graduation. He signed with Miami as an undrafted free agent in 2007. After playing 18 games with the Dolphins, he was on the New York Giants roster in 2008 and Atlanta Falcons in 2009.
The native of Tallahassee, Florida, just concluded his third season as head football coach at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. He previously served as assistant coach at Linn-Mar from 2016-20.
Miles will accompany the Iowa captains to midfield for Friday’s pregame coin toss. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game.
The UNI women’s basketball team is in the Virgin Islands and will play Auburn Thursday afternoon in the Paradise Jam. The Panthers are 3-1 and have been off since last week’s victory over then eighth ranked Iowa State.
That’s Panther coach Tanya Warren who says her team is ready to move on to the next challenge.
The Panthers will play three games in three days.
(Radio Iowa) – A new committee in the Iowa House will take a deeper look at state accounts that are set aside for specific purposes as well as the “block grants” the federal government sends the State of Iowa. Federal block grants are distributed to states and are designated for a wide variety of programs that are managed by state officials. Republican Representative Martin Graber of Fort Madison will be chairman of the House Committee on Federal and Other Funds.
The next Trump Administration might be sending even more block grants to states and giving state officials broader authority on how the money is spent.
Graber, who was just elected to a third term in the Iowa House, says giving state officials greater latitude to spend federal money would be a positive move.
Most of the taxes and fees the STATE collects is depositing in what’s called the General Fund, but Graber says the legislature has created all sorts of special state accounts designed to support specific projects.
Graber, a retired Iowa National Guard brigadier general, has a Masters in Business Administration from St. Ambrose University and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the Army War College. He is currently a financial advisor.
Iowa’s improved offense looks for a good finish at home against Nebraska. Sophomore Jackson Stratton is listed as the starter at quarterback after leading the Hawkeyes to a 29-13 win at Maryland and says he felt calm in making his first college start.
Stratton says he had a lot of help from his teammates in getting ready to be the starter.

Richman says a big part of running back Kaleb Brown’s success this season is his maturity on and off the field.
Several Iowa seniors who returned for an extra season will play their final game in Kinnick Stadium Friday night when the Hawkeyes host Nebraska.
After leading the nation in tackles last season linebacker Jay Higgins returned for an extra season.
Higgins says he wanted to play college football as long as he could.
Linebacker Nick Jackson returned for a second year with the Hawkeyes after transferring from Virginia.
Jackson says the added season made him feel like he was more than just a transfer.
Iowa defensive tackle Yahya (Y-ay) Black expects an old school Big Ten battle against Nebraska.
VERNA SCHULER, 92, of Atlantic (& formerly of Griswold), died Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at Heritage House in Atlantic. Funeral services for VERNA SCHULER will be held 10:30-a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024, at the First Church of Christ in Atlantic. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements. The service will be recorded and will be posted to the funeral home website by noon on Wednesday.
Visitation with family present will be from 5-until 7-p.m., Monday, December 2nd at the First Church of Christ in Atlantic.
Following a luncheon at the church, burial will take place at the Noble Center Cemetery south of Lyman, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to the family and will be given to various charities of the families wishes.
