Coughing spells causes 3 car accident in Red Oak, Sunday

News

November 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A coughing spell is to blame fora three-vehicle, non-injury accident Sunday afternoon, in Red Oak. According to the Red Oak P-D, vehicles driven by 60-year old James Abbott, of Glenwood, and 24-year old Samantha Ranney, of Red Oak, were stopped at the intersection of North Broadway and West Coolbaugh Streets, waiting for the traffic light to change. A vehicle driven by 25-year old Michael Richards, of Red Oak, was in line behind the other two vehicles, when Richards began to cough and accidentally stepped on the accelerator.

Richards’ 1992 Ford Ranger pickup hit the rear of Ranney’s 1996 Honda Accord,  which then launched forward and hit Abbott’s 2004 Dodge Ram 1600 pickup. A passenger in Ranney’s car complained of pain in her ribs, but refused medical treatment. The accident happened at around 12:35-p.m.

Damage from the collision amounted to $2,300. Authorities say Richards was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and Reduce Speed as Necessary.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Linebacker Tamba Hali and cornerback Sean Smith returned turnovers for touchdowns in extending the Kansas City Chiefs’ perfect start to nine straight games with a 23-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Hali put the Chiefs ahead for good by scoring on an 11-yard fumble return with 12:47 remaining. Smith changed the momentum of the game by intercepting Jeff Tuel’s pass at the goal line and returning it 100 yards to tie it at 10 in the opening minutes of the second half.

Kansas City’s opportunistic defense made up for its own deficiencies as well as an Alex Smith-led offense that managed just 210 yards. Buffalo (3-6) had a season-best 470 yards of offense. Tuel, an undrafted rookie, struggled in his first NFL start. He went 18 of 39 for 229 yards passing with a touchdown and two interceptions while filling in for interim starter Thad Lewis, sidelined by bruised ribs.
