AMU proposes rate increases for water and electric service

News

November 21st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Officials with Atlantic Municipal Utilities are proposing an electric and water rate increase. Councilman Dana Halder reported to the City Council Wednesday night he sat in on the AMU Board meeting on November 18th. Halder says the board reviewed the budget and set Dec. 2nd at 5:30-p.m. as the date and time for a public hearing on the proposed 5-percent increase each for the water and electric. The meeting will be held in the basement meeting room in the AMU building. If approved, it would be the second consecutive year for rate increases from AMU.

Last year, electric rates went up 12-percent, and the water rate was increased 4-percent. AMU General Manager Steve Tjepkes has said the proposed electric rate increase is due to EPA regulations for the coal-fired power plant in Council Bluffs, from which AMU receives additional energy. AMU’s cost related to the Council Bluffs plant improvements and EPA compliance will amount to $500-thousand next year, and about $1.2-million in 2015.

Tjepkes reports also that the proposed increase in Atlantic’s water rates is driven by changes that require parts of the system to be lead-free, which entails the removal of some parts and replacement of those items with non-lead parts. Those costs are estimated at 30-to 35-thousand dollars.

If approved, the average household in Atlantic would see a One-dollar increase in their water bill each month, while the electric bill would increase two-to three-dollars per month. Councilman Halder reports also, the AMU Board discussed and approved a resolution pertaining to a metering charge.Halder says AMU has the ability to receive by radio waves the meter reading. If residents don’t allow the utility to install the new meters, after a certain amount of time there will be a $25 charge.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – After getting his weight under control, defensive tackle Kyle Love turned his attention to getting his diabetes in check. Now, he’s ready to focus on playing football again.    The Chiefs signed the former Patriots lineman after a workout this week, and he could be pressed into service as early as Sunday against San Diego. Defensive tackle Mike DeVito did not practice Wednesday because of a sprained knee and might miss the game.

That could create an opportunity for Love, who’s been working out at home in Atlanta and waiting for a call all season. He was released by New England when his weight ballooned, and then waived by the Jaguars before the season started.

The Chiefs released Anthony Toribio to make room for him on the roster.

EPA offers grants to replace older diesel engines

Ag/Outdoor, News

November 21st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Owners of construction vehicles with older diesel engines in nine Iowa counties may apply for a federal rebate to help replace the vehicles or retrofit older vehicles with new cleaner burning engines. The Environmental Protection Agency is making $2 million available for public and private owners of construction vehicles. Those in Black Hawk, Harrison, Johnson, Linn, Mills, Polk, Pottawattamie, Scott, and Woodbury counties may apply for the money. The EPA says the rebates target counties facing air quality challenges.

Since diesel engines in construction equipment can last for decades, the EPA program is geared toward replacing older less efficient engines that emit more pollutants with newer less polluting engines. EPA will accept applications until Jan. 15 and anticipates awarding the rebates in February.

Iowa recruits volunteers to monitor weather

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials are recruiting people to help monitor the state’s weather as part of a volunteer network. The state Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says data on rain, hail and snow that’s collected by volunteers will be used for flood forecasting, scientific research and general weather interest. The department’s state climatology office works with the National Weather Service in Des Moines to make sure the data is immediately available for free online.

Interested volunteers just need a four-inch diameter rain gage and a suitable location for the gage.

The Colorado Climate Center established the volunteer network in 1998, and it’s available in all 50 states and Canada. Iowa joined in 2007 and has more than 300 registered volunteers.
