DENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning went virtually untouched by Kansas City’s sack-happy defense Sunday night, throwing for 323 yards and a touchdown to lead the Denver Broncos to a 27-17 victory over the NFL’s last undefeated team. The Chiefs, who came into the game with a league-leading 36 sacks, barely breathed on Manning, who finished 24 for 40.

The Broncos tied Kansas City at 9-1 atop the AFC West with a rematch set in two weeks. Denver fell short of its league-leading average of 41.2 points but the Chiefs, who came in allowing a NFL-low 12.8 per game, couldn’t keep up. Alex Smith threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas City, which hadn’t lost since a 38-3 setback in Denver last December to close out a 2-14 season.

DENVER (AP) — Kansas City defensive end Mike DeVito and Denver safety Rahim Moore were knocked out with injuries in the first half of the Chiefs-Broncos showdown Monday night. DeVito injured his left knee on a short run by Knowshon Moreno in the first quarter and walked off on his own after staying down for a minute.

Moore left the game in the second quarter with what the Broncos called only a lower-leg injury. It wasn’t clear on what play Moore got hurt. Both players were ruled out for the second half. Denver led 17-10 at halftime.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The appropriateness of an Iowa lottery scratch game with ties to college football in the state is being questioned. The Des Moines Register reports some lawmakers and professors question whether state universities should help promote gambling. The debate is focused on the “Tail Gator” game that offers a chance to win packages to attend football games at Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa.

Iowa psychology professor Elizabeth Altmaier says she thinks it’s wrong for the universities to be associated with any aspect of gambling. The NCAA recommends that schools avoid deals like this in its best practices guidance but it doesn’t strictly prohibit them.

Public documents show Iowa will get $75,000 this season for the lottery promotion. Iowa State will get $60,000 and Northern Iowa will receive $20,000.
