Tons of pork delivered to needy Iowans

Ag/Outdoor, News

December 9th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Iowa’s largest pork producer is donating more than 23 tons of pork loin roasts to food banks and needy families this month. Jen Sorenson is coordinating the project for Iowa Select Farms, based in Iowa Falls. The company markets its pigs to JBS Swift located in Marshalltown. Sorenson says Iowa Select trucks are currently delivering more than 7,000 pork roasts to rural community food banks where Iowa Select operates its farms. “We buy the fresh pork loins from JBS in Marshalltown and we do all the deliveries ourselves,” Sorenson says.

The pork roasts are donated through Deb and Jeff Hanson’s charitable foundation. The Hansons own Iowa Select Farms. Sorenson says around 3,000 more pork loins will distributed during an event on December 18th at the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. “We give away free pork loins to anyone in need,” Sorenson says.

Iowa Select Farms has more than 1,000 employees, with nearly 550 swine farms across the state. The company also contracts with roughly 350 farm families in Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — As the federal government hustles to fix the much-maligned insurance enrollment website, one Midwestern insurer is poking fun at the technical problems as it tries to lure away some potential customers. New television ads from Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield launched recently in Iowa and South Dakota tell viewers that the government website isn’t “the only place to buy health insurance.”

TAMA, Iowa (AP) — Authorities in central Iowa are investigating a crash that killed two 21-year-old men when their vehicle slammed into a tree. “Miracle on Ice” goalie talks about heart health with stop in Iowa

News, Sports

December 9th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

One of the heroes of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” U.S. Olympic hockey team was in Iowa this past week. Jim Craig was the goalie on the gold medal winning team from Lake Placid, but his visit to Sioux City had nothing to do with hockey. Craig spoke to physicians and medical staff at St. Luke’s Unity Point Health Center about a heredity heart illness that claimed his father’s life — an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

“They call this the silent killer because it’s asystematic,” Craig said. “The things that happened with my father were really preventable. He had a massive heart attack at 48 years old, he had high blood pressure, and he had smoked. So, he had all the criteria for somebody to be screened. And yet, when he went in to the hospital, they thought it was kidney stones.” Craig said he’s raising awareness of the ailment that a medical test can now detect, and save a person’s life.

It’s a minimally invasive procedure,” Craig said. “It’s really simple. You’re in and out in a day and a half. If we can get people to be aware they’re likely to get it, if we can get them aware to be screened, and then they go in and have the surgery…it’s a piece of cake.” Craig has seven brothers and sisters and said one brother has been diagnosed with a similar aneurysm, but has received successful treatment. Craig said he keeps in touch with several of his former hockey teammates — many are now motivational speakers stemming from their Olympic experience.

Iowa to play LSU in Outback Bowl

Sports

December 9th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes will play 15th ranked LSU in the Outback Bowl in Tampa on New Years Day. It will complete a bounce back year for a program that missed out on a bowl in 2012 with a 4-8 record. The Haweyes are 8-4, after finishing the regular season with three straight wins, and will take on an LSU team that is 9-3. It will be the second time Iowa and LSU have met in a bowl game.

Back in the 2005 Capitol One Bowl Drew Tate hit Warren Holloway with a 56 yard touchdown pass as time expired for a 30-25 Iowa win. The Tigers will be without senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who suffered a knee injury in the regular season finale but Hawkeyes Coach Kirk Ferentz says in the 2005 meeting the Tigers played three different quarterbacks.

Ferentz says it will be a great opportunity for the Hawkeyes. Iowa became the fourth choice out of the Big Ten and wins over Michigan and Nebraska the final two weeks moved the Hawkeyes up the pecking order. Iowa AD Gary Barta believes fans are anxious to travel to a bowl game after missing out last season. Iowa has always been an attractive bowl team because of the number of fans it brings but Barta says the difference this season were the results on the field.

This will be Iowa’s fourth trip to the Outback Bowl and the first one since a lopsided win over South Carolina in 2009.
