TERREL W. KLAHN, 71, of Oakland, died suddenly Sun., Dec. 22nd, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.   Funeral services for TERREL KLAHN will be held 11:30 AM Thu., Dec. 26th, at the Fellowship of Faith Christian Center in Oakland. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, December 26, 2013 from 9-11 AM at the Fellowship of Faith Christian Center.

Interment will be at 2:30 PM at the Zion Cemetery at Treynor.

TERREL KLAHN is survived by:

His wife – Deanna, of Oakland.

His daughters – Amy (David) Maatz of Corcoran, MN, Lori (John) Hanson of Waseca, MN, and Heidi (Jon) Boehme of LeMars.

His sisters: Shirley (Gerald) Young, Jeralyn (Elwyn)Rollins, and Rogene (Frank) Baum.

7 grandchildren; His brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends.

No. 17 Iowa State beats George Mason 79-67

HONOLULU (AP) — Georges Niang scored 22 points and Number 17 Iowa State beat George Mason 79-67 on Sunday in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic. The Cyclones (9-0) had their second-lowest scoring game of the season but still managed to extend their winning streak. Iowa State was one of 10 undefeated teams in Division I at the start of Sunday.

Three minutes into the second half, Niang stole the ball from Marko Gujanicic and his layup gave Iowa State its first 10-point lead at 40-30. After that, George Mason (5-5) pulled no closer than five points with 6:18 left.

Iowa State made just three of 14 3-point attempts in the first half (21 percent) but the Cyclones used a 10-2 run to avoid their worst half in any game this season.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Travel conditions are likely to remain hazardous in Iowa through Monday morning as strong winds create snow drifts and glazed roads. The latest road conditions are available online at http://511ia.org or by calling 511 when in Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines police officer is facing sanctions after department officials determined that he acted improperly when he shot out a van tire during an October pursuit. Sergeant Jason Halifax tells the Register that Sergeant Greg Wessels’ actions violated the department’s policy on using deadly force. Wessels remains on duty. His commanders will decide what punishment to impose.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Two deer hunters have been injured during the last weekend of shotgun season. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said yesterday that a Madrid man was shot in his elbow by a hunter who was shooting at a deer in Dallas County on Saturday. Fifty-year-old Michael Otto was treated at a Des Moines hospital. Twenty-one-year-old Holden Hillegas of Charles City also was accidentally shot Saturday near Floyd.

Red Oak man arrested for Criminal mischief after damaging a building

Police in Red Oak arrested a local man  Sunday after he allegedly used a vehicle to cause several thousand dollars worth of damage to a building. 23-year old Michael T. Archer, of Red Oak, was charged with Criminal Mischief in the 2nd degree.

Authorities say the charge stems from an incident at the office building of Dr. Wyatt at 1905 E. Summit in Red Oak, where a vehicle damaged a fence and wooden handicap ramp.

Archer was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $5,000 cash bond.

No. 25 Iowa beats Arkansas-Pine Bluff 85-61

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Josh Oglesby scored 13 points in his season debut and No. 25 Iowa rolled to an 85-61 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday. The Hawkeyes (11-2) opened their final non-conference game with a 39-5 run. Jarrod Uthoff scored 16 points and Adam Woodbury added 10. Oglesby missed Iowa’s first 12 games with a broken foot. He made his first four 3-pointers during a 6-minute stretch in the first half— drawing a loud ovation from the fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Tevin Hammond scored 19 points for Pine Bluff (2-9), which lost its ninth straight. The Hawkeyes shot 75 percent from the field in taking a 52-15 halftime lead. Iowa committed a season-worst 27 turnovers but dominated the rebounding 42-27. The Golden Eagles shot 33 percent from the field overall.

Iowa opens Big Ten play on Dec. 31 against Nebraska. Iowa held a moment of silence before the game for Pam Culver, the school’s longtime basketball secretary who died Saturday.

Luck, Brown lead Colts past Chiefs 23-7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andrew Luck threw for 241 yards and a touchdown, Donald Brown ran 51 yards for another score and the Indianapolis Colts beat the Kansas City Chiefs 23-7 on Sunday in a potential preview of an AFC wild-card playoff game.

The Colts (10-5) took advantage of four turnovers by the Chiefs (11-4) to win for the fifth time in their last six tries against Kansas City. If Indianapolis ends up as the No. 4 seed and the Chiefs the No. 5 for the playoffs, they’ll meet again at Lucas Oil Stadium in two weeks.

Alex Smith threw for 153 yards for Kansas City, but he also lost a fumble and was picked off twice. He had thrown just six interceptions in the first 14 games.

Jamaal Charles ran for 106 yards and the game’s opening touchdown, but Kansas City failed to keep him involved as the Colts scored the final 23 points.
