No. 13 Iowa State beats Texas Tech 73-62

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Georges Niang scored 17 points and Melvin Ejim added 16 to lead Number 13 Iowa State to a 73-62 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday, extending the Cyclones’ winning streak to a school record-tying 13 games. DeAndre Kane had 15 points for the Cyclones (13-0, 1-0) in the Big 12 opener for both teams. The win was the second in the Lubbock for Iowa State in the past eight games.

Jaye Crockett had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Dusty Hannahs added 16 points to lead Texas Tech (8-6, 0-1). The Cyclones came into the game averaging just over nine 3-pointers but managed only five against the Red Raiders. Texas Tech held Iowa State 15 points below its average.

Texas Tech tied the Cyclones at 50 on a 3-pointer by Crockett at 12:33 of the second half but the Red Raiders never took a lead.

South Dakota trounces Div. III Iowa Wesleyan 86-52

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Tyler Flack scored 16 points to pace South Dakota in its 86-52 win over Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday. South Dakota (5-9) got 15 points from Trevor Gruis, on 7 of 8 shooting, and 12 apiece from Brandon Bos and Adam Thoseby. The Coyotes shot 51 percent from the floor, including 7 of 17 from beyond the arc, and held a 43-24 advantage on the boards. Iowa Wesleyan, a Division III school, was led by Murray Schwengels with 13.

The Coyotes scored the game’s first eight points and later in the half had a 15-4 run as they built a 47-29 halftime advantage. An 11-point run to start the second half sealed Wesleyan’s fate as the lead grew to 27 points just 3:21 after the break. South Dakota held the Tigers scoreless over the game’s final 5:28.

EUGENE CLARK, 81, of Stuart, died Sat., Jan. 4th, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services for EUGENE CLARK will be held 2-p.m. Wed., Jan. 8th, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield.

The family will greet friends from 5-to 7-pm Tuesday, at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

A luncheon at the Greenfield United Methodist Church will take place following the committal service in the Greenfield Cemetery.

Braddyville woman arrested at the Page County Jail on Public Intox charge

A woman who came to visit an inmate at the Page County Jail Saturday afternoon nearly became an inmate herself, after it was determined she was under the influence of alcohol. Sheriff’s officials arrested 37-year old Lee Ann Gulbrandson, of Braddyville on a charge of Public Intoxication, after she came to the north door of the jail at around 1:15-p.m., smelling of alcohol.

Gulbrandson, who is also known as Lee Ann Bencker, was released from custody after posting a $300 bond.

KAREN LOUISE OWENS, 71, of Council Bluffs, died Thu., Jan. 2nd, at the Risen Son Christian Village. A Funeral service for KAREN OWENS will be held 1-p.m. Mon., Jan. 6th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 4-to 6-pm on Sunday.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

2 arrests made in Shelby County burglary

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reports two people have been arrested in connection with a burglary that occurred last month. 59-year old Gerard Rueschenberg, of Westphalia and 58-year old Leann Grieder, of Harlan, have been charged with Burglary in the 3rd degree. Both were brought to the Shelby County Jail and later posted $5,000 bond each before being released.

Authorities say evidence discovered during a rural farm residence burglary on Dec. 20th resulted in a search warrant being executed Dec. 22nd at Rueschenberg’s residence in Westphalia. During the search, numerous items from the burglary were recovered. Additional items were recovered at the Grieder residence in Harlan on the same date.
