Family Crisis Support Networks hosted a duck pond activity

The Cass County Child Abuse Prevention Council partnered with the Healthy Cass County Coalition and other community organizations to host their second annual Family Fun Day at the 2023 Cass County Fair.

On Saturday, July 29th, the fairgrounds were full of family activities from noon-4 PM, including water fights, a duck pond, a garden story walk, hands-on S.T.E.M. activities, a book walk, yard games and more! Each station earned a stamp on a prize card that rewarded the family with a food voucher provided by the Family Crisis Support Network.

Thank you to all the participating organizations for making the day a huge success:  Healthy Cass County, Shift ATL/Sunnyside Range, Cass County Child Abuse Prevention Council, Atlantic Fire Department, Atlantic Public Library, Zion Integrated Behavioral Health Services, Cass County Master Gardeners, Cass County ISU Extension, Cass County Farm Bureau, Iowa Learning Farms, Cass County 4-H and Iowa Corn.

Iowa Learning Farms set up their Conservation Station to teach about the science of water quality and natural resources through hands-on interactive activities

The Cass County Child Abuse Prevention Council and Healthy Cass County loved seeing families enjoy some time together at the Cass County Fair while gathering ideas for activities that can be done at home, at school and out in the community as a family. The council also reminds people that child abuse is preventable, and everyone can play a part in creating safe, healthy, and nurturing environments for kids in our local communities. We cannot wait for next year to do it all over again!

Finally, relief from the heat wave as forecasters see 80’s for the weekend

News, Weather

August 25th, 2023 by Jim Field

That excessive heat warning is still posted for a fifth consecutive day for 28 counties in southern Iowa until 7 o’clock tonight (Friday), and while the rest of the state is no longer under the warning, it’ll still be hot — just not as hot as it’s been all week. Meteorologist Alexis Jimenez (hah-MEN-ez), with the National Weather Service, says the extreme heat wave is finally cooling off, though it’ll be gradual.

Parts of northern Iowa saw showers and scattered thunderstorms this morning, though the rain won’t be widespread. By tomorrow, Jimenez says temperatures should be closer to normal for Iowa in late August.

Forecasters say some areas of the state may see highs a few days next week only in the 70s. That’s a big change from this week, as multiple records were set in triple-digits, including 105 degrees in Waterloo on Wednesday, and a heat index of 122 degrees in Sioux City on Monday.

Atlantic Football Feeling Confident for Clarke

Sports

August 25th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

(Atlantic) — The wait for Trojan football is finally over. This week the Trojans start their season on the road at Clarke. But last week Atlantic had a scrimmage against Carroll where some cobwebs had to be dusted off.

That was Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer. The scrimmage revealed a few weaknesses that the Trojans needed to work on. Coach Brummer was candid about his takeaways from the scrimmage. He dedicated all of this week’s practice to strengthen his team and becoming better.

It is not all doom and gloom for Atlantic. With the tweaks made Coach Brummer is still confident in his team and the work they’ve been putting in all off season. He sees a lot of positives in this year’s team. He likes the tenacity and fresh energy they carry.

Tonight’s matchup will be a good test for this younger Atlantic squad. Even with Clarke being a class size smaller at 2A, this will not be an easy game for the Trojans. Coach Brummer is aware of the grit Atlantic needs to win tonight’s game.

Kickoff in Osceola is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 25th. The game will be carried on KJAN/KJANTV and the pregame show starts at 6:30 p.m.

Hawkeyes Control Cyclones, 2-1, in Cy-Hawk Series Opener

Sports

August 25th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa  The University of Iowa women’s soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season with a, 2-1, victory over Iowa State on Thursday night at the University of Iowa Soccer Complex. With the rivalry win, the Hawkeyes score the first two points in the 2023-24 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

A goal from junior Kenzie Roling in the 34th minute gave Iowa the lead heading into halftime. Sophomore Shae Doherty hit Roling in transition to set up the score against a two-on-one look from the Cyclone defense.

Three minutes into the second half, junior Elle Otto widened the gap with her second goal of the season. Coming on another transition look, Otto’s first shot was blocked by sliding Cyclone goalkeeper Avery Gillahan; Otto was there for the rebound and sailed the ball through an open net.

Iowa once again kept up the offensive pressure, outshooting its opponent for the third-straight contest, with a 19-7 advantage in shots over the Cyclones. Each team finished with five shots on goal.

Iowa State didn’t quit. Oliva Edwards found Lauren Hernandez off a free kick set piece to convert a score in the 82nd minute of play to make the score 2-1. The goal proved to be too-little-too-late, in part thanks to a lunging save by senior Macy Enneking earlier in the period off a dangerous look in the box from Iowa State’s Alex Campana in the 54th minute. Enneking finished with four saves on Thursday.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI

“I have coached in enough of these to know that you can have a good plan, but tactics sometimes go out the window. It is about who competes and wins the small moments within the game. I thought we did a little bit of both, to be honest. I thought we, tactically, were prepared. I think our kids ran the gameplan to perfection, to be honest. I felt we created enough chances.

I was disappointed at the end that we let the game get a little bit loose. That is going to happen when momentum lulls, but that is a little bit naïve. We had some young players on the field, and we have to do a little better job of managing momentum. One small miss turns into a snowball effect, but our kids held on, battled and did enough to get the win, which we deserved.

Elle [Otto] has been just a godsend. Her work ethic is extreme. She has gotten better as a soccer player. Initially, she was just a back-to-goal player, and now she is turning, slipping players, looking to hunt her shot. I am really proud. She missed a chance in the first half with a great move and touch in the box. She, Kenzie [Roling], Delaney [Holtey] and Kelli [McGroarty] helped us do a great job up top and created some good chances.

This was a team win, I thought. Everybody who came off the bench played well and played a role to help us get this win… We take it really seriously, starting the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series and being the first sport out. Last year was a bit disappointing, so we are really happy for the fans and the Hawkeyes. Now we pass that baton on to everybody else who goes after us.”

HAWKEYE NOTABLES

  • Iowa Soccer improves to 15-8-2 against Iowa State in the all-time series.
  • Fútbol Forecast: Since 2013, the winner of the Iowa vs. Iowa State women’s soccer match has correlated to the winner of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series football game in eight of nine seasons (the outlier was in 2018).
  • 2 for the Money: The Hawkeyes are undefeated in their last 39 games when scoring two goals or more. Since the start of the 2018 season, Iowa has a record of 36-0-3 when scoring two goals or more. That includes a 2-0-0 record this season, 4-0-2 record in 2022, 9-0 in 2021, 2-0 in 2020, 13-0-1 in 2019 and 5-0 in 2018. The Hawkeyes won their final two games in 2017 when scoring two-plus goals. The last time Iowa lost a game while netting at least two goals was Oct. 1, 2017, at Michigan State (L, 3-2).
  • 90 Tracker: Senior Samantha Cary (3) and freshman Millie Greer (2) each logged 90 minutes on the Hawkeye back line. Other Hawkeyes to play the entirety of at least one match this season are seniors Rielee Fetty and Maggie Johnston.

UP NEXT

Iowa (3-0) travels to Starkville, Mississippi, on Aug. 31 for a showdown with Mississippi State (2-0-1) at the Mississippi State Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes host Senior Day the following Sunday, Sept. 3, starting at 1 p.m. vs. SEMO (1-1-1) at the University of Iowa Soccer Complex.

Cyclones Drop First Match of Season to Iowa, 2-1

Sports

August 25th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Cyclone soccer program suffered its first setback of the season on Thursday evening, falling to in-state rival Iowa, 2-1, at the Iowa Soccer Complex. With the win, Iowa takes a 2-0 lead in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

Iowa State (2-1-0) was held scoreless until the final ten minutes of action, as the Iowa defense stifled most of ISU’s offensive attack on the night. Iowa (3-0-0) used a late first-half goal, paired with an early second-half goal, to get an edge over the Cyclones.

The first half saw each team record a handful of shots, five for Iowa and two for Iowa State, but with nothing doing as neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Hawkeyes finally broke through in the 34th minute as Kenzie Roling snuck one past Avery Gillahan off a Shae Doherty feed to put the Hawks on top.

Iowa took its 1-0 lead into the break and both teams came out of the half with the same mentality – hunt more shots.

The Hawkeyes tallied 12 in the second stanza and the Cyclones seven as each team started to push the pace and play with more urgency. Iowa’s energy out of the gate resulted in an early second-half goal from Elle Otto and the Hawks took a 2-0 lead.

After an early setback, Iowa State kept trying its luck on the Hawkeye defense, eventually putting a score on the board in the 82nd minute as Lauren Hernandez snagged her first goal of the 2023 season off an Olivia Edwards free kick.

The Cyclones would threaten down to the wire, seeing a cross fall just short of connecting in the final seconds of action as ISU dropped its first action of the year.

Fannon’s Thoughts

“It’s difficult to be in a situation where you’re on the front foot and the aggressor. Their goal early in the second half kind of knocked the wind out of us. The part I took away from tonight is that when the match was at its hardest, we stepped up and got as close as possible in literally the last seconds.”

Goals

Iowa State: Lauren Hernandez (82′)

Iowa: Kenzie Roling (34’), Elle Otto (48’)

Assists

Iowa State: Olivia Edwards

Iowa: Shae Doherty

Up Next
The Cyclones will return to the pitch this Sunday when they travel to Brookings, South Dakota, to take on the SDSU Jackrabbits. ISU and South Dakota State’s Sunday match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. and the action will be streamed on the Summit League Network.

New postage stamps honoring four US bridges feature two Iowa landmarks

News

August 25th, 2023 by Jim Field

The U-S Postal Service is issuing a new set of four stamps depicting the architectural beauty of bridges, and two of those bridges lead to Iowa.

The series of stamps is simply called “Bridges” and one of them shows an aerial view of the recently-completed Interstate 74 bridge over the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities, officially known as the Iowa-Illinois Memorial Bridge, which connects Bettendorf and Moline. Another stamp depicts a span at the other end of the state: The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge which links Council Bluffs to Omaha, Nebraska. The others are the Skydance Bridge in Oklahoma City and the Arrigoni Bridge connecting Middletown and Portland, Connecticut. The 25-cent stamps are for Presorted First Class Mail and they went on sale Thursday.
