Trojans Struggle on the Road against Greene County

Sports

September 8th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

(Jefferson) — It was a tough night for the Trojans in Jefferson. Greene County found a rhythm early and went on to win 41-6 over Atlantic. Turnovers and penalties proved to be a challenge for Atlantic.

The game started with a quick sweep to Trey Schilling for 25 yards and the inaugural score. Atlantic would fumble on the following drive. Then a field goal shortly followed by Nathan Behne who went 2-3 on field goals and the game was 10-0. The Trojan offense came back out and fumbled again on the snap. Then again the Rams drove down the field and scored on a 6 yard touchdown pitch to Nick Stream. It was 17-0 Greene County.

The Trojan offense stalled and Gabe Ebersole took his team back down the field. Ebersole then called his own number and sprinted into the end zone on a 14 yard touchdown run. The game turned into 24-0.

After an Atlantic interception to Jack Hansen and a fumble recovery for the Trojans. Atlantic had their best drive of the night thanks to Gavin McLaren punching it in from the one yard line to make the game 24-6 at half.

In the second half things didn’t change for the Trojans and Greene County found their stride again. Ebersole dropped back and threw a 48 yard spiral to Jack Hansen on the sideline for a score. The game was now 31-6. Nathan Behne chipped in another 37 yard field goal and the game was slipping away from Atlantic, 34-6 Greene County.

The last score of the game was near the end of the third quarter. Ebersole took the snap and glided his way into the end zone for another 14 yard touchdown. The Rams led 41-6 and neither team would score again.

Atlantic Coach Joe Brummer recognized the disappointing performance from Atlantic

Penalties and turnovers were a thorn for Atlantic on Friday night. The Trojans finished with 7 total turnovers and 13 penalties. Coach Brummer did manage to find a few positives from his team.

However, Coach Brummer and the Trojans are looking to bounce back against Winterset at home next Friday.

A Des Moines man was sentenced Wednesday, September 6, 2023, to six years in prison following his guilty plea to receipt of child pornography.

According to court documents, over the course of several months in 2022, 55 year old Matthew John Marcalus used Instagram to communicate with a fifteen-year-old child. During these conversations, Marcalus engaged in sexually explicit chats, and solicited and received photos of the child engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Marcalus also sent the child photos of Marcalus’s genitals. Eventually, law enforcement became involved and communicated with Marcalus while posing as the fifteen-year-old child. Officers arrested Marcalus when he arrived at a location to meet the child.

Following his prison term, Marcalus must also serve a ten-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement.

The Ankeny Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the FBI Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney Ryan Leemkuil prosecuted the case.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood. Why is my oak tree going nuts with acorns this year?

News

September 8th, 2023 by Jim Field

Iowa is known as the king of corn but lately, there also appears to be a bumper crop of acorns. Anyone who’s taken a walk near oak trees has crunched across many hundreds of the dime-sized seeds with the cute caps. Mike Reinikainen (rain-ee-KY-nen) is a silviculturist (SILL-vah-culturalist), or an expert forester, and he says that abundance of acorns is called “oak masting” and it’s a cycle of nature.

Iowa’s been weathering a drought for several years and we’ve seen a slew of hundred-degree records set in recent weeks. Reinikainen says that’s all playing a role in the oak masting as fall approaches.

Iowa homeowners with oaks on their property don’t need to be concerned. Reinikainen says there is -no- evidence to suggest acorns damage your lawn by changing the p-H balance of the soil, but most people rake them up as a matter of comfort for bare feet or because they’re unsightly.

Iowa State hosts Iowa in 70th meeting

Sports

September 8th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State hosts Iowa in the 70th meeting of the series in Ames. The game will feature two new quarterbacks. Iowa’s Cade McNamara is a Michigan transfer and led the Hawkeyes to a 24-14 season opening win over Utah State.

That’s Cyclone coach Matt Campbell who says the Hawkeyes have an experienced offense.

Redshirt freshman Rocco Becht gets his second start at quarterback for a Cyclone offense that has had difficulty finding the end zone against the Hawkeyes.

Campbell says true freshman J.J. Kohl could also get some snaps at quarterback.

Mistakes and turnovers have played a big role in the outcome over the years.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Cyclones were impressive in a win over UNI.

Ferentz believes the offensive line will do a better job in the run game as the season progresses.

With Cade McNamara nursing an injured quad quarterback sneaks and bootlegs are not part of the package.

Iowa leads the all-time series 46-23.

Rural Iowans, especially farmers, considered ‘vulnerable’ to suicide risk

News

September 8th, 2023 by Jim Field

This Sunday is World Suicide Prevention Day and Iowa health officials are working to raise awareness about the free, confidential, round-the-clock help that’s available through the 9-8-8 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Julie Maas (MOSS), Iowa’s 9-8-8 project director, says they’re focusing not just on the state’s larger cities, but also remote areas.

The Lifeline was launched in July of last year and has since had contacts with more than 40-thousand people across Iowa, most of them through phone calls but some via text or chat.

Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in Iowa, but it’s number-two for those between the ages of ten and 35. Roughly one in five people who reach out to the Lifeline in Iowa are considering taking their own lives. The rest may be experiencing some sort of crisis, which can range from having a car that won’t start to being diagnosed with cancer.

A report released in May from Trust for America’s Health shows 549 Iowans died by suicide in 2021, which is a drop of three-percent from the year before.
