LOS ANGELES — The University of Iowa soccer team defeated Georgetown, 1-0, on Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in program history.

It was a defensive battle in the first 45 minutes as the Hawkeyes and Hoyas combined for six total shots, three a piece. Meike Ingles fired the lone shot on goal in the first half that was saved by Cara Martin, the Georgetown goalkeeper.

The Hawkeye defense didn’t allow a shot on goal in the first half. The Hoyas had one corner kick in the first half while Iowa had zero. The Hawkeyes were whistled for offsides four times in the first 45 minutes.

Iowa and Georgetown headed into the break with a scoreless tie.

Ingles broke the scoring drought in the 54th minute with her seventh goal of the season, giving Iowa a 1-0 advantage over Georgetown. Ingles seven goals on the season co-leads the team. Berit Parten also has seven goals for the Hawkeyes. The goal would go on to be the game winning goal, Ingles’s second game winning goal of the season.

The Hawkeye defense stayed dominant in the second half allowing just two shots and one shot on goal. Georgetown had a scoring opportunity in the 69th minute but goalkeeper Macy Enneking’s lone save of the game kept the Hawkeyes in front.

Anna Karpenko subbed in at goalkeeper at halftime for Georgetown. Karpenko had two saves in the second 45. Ingles fired one that was saved before Parten fired one on goal that was also saved.

The Hawkeyes finished with six shots to Georgetown’s five. Georgetown had three corner kicks while Iowa had one. Ingles finished with three shots on goal for Iowa.

HAWKEYE NOTABLES
– The Hawkeyes are moving on to the Round of 16 for the first time in program history.
– With 15 wins on the season Iowa has now tied the program record for most wins in a season.
– Iowa improves to 4-4 all time in the NCAA Tournament. All four tournament victories have come under head coach Dave DiIanni.
– The shutout marks Iowa’s 12 shutout of the season.
– Iowa has allowed 11 goals on the season. The current record for least goals allowed is 16 in 2020.
– The Hawkeyes currently have an .800 winning percentage on the season. The previous high win percentage came in 2019 when it was .738.
– The win marks Iowa’s first victory over Georgetown. The two programs had previously not met prior to Friday’s match.
– Iowa has two losses on the season (Wisconsin and Minnesota). Both teams also punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 on Friday.
– Macy Enneking has 11.5 shutouts on the season. Enneking set the individual record in 2023 with 12 shutouts.
– 90 Tracker: Sofia Bush, Rielee Fetty, Eva Pattison, Meike Ingles, Miah Schueller, and Millie Greer were the six Iowa position players to register 90 minutes on Friday night. 15 Hawkeyes registered minutes in the 1-0 victory over Georgetown.

The Hawkeyes await the winner of two seeded UCLA and seven seeded Virginia Tech which will finish up later tonight. The Round of 16 match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 22nd in Los Angeles. The match is set to kick off at 8:00 p.m. (CT).

The Atlantic Trojans Girls Basketball Team dropped their second straight season opener to the Pella Dutch. Although this game was closer than last year’s contest, tonight was a game that Atlantic feels like they should have won. Down by 16 points in the third quarter, the Dutch came storming back to take the lead late in the 4th and once they had they lead, they never looked back, winning  66-52.

Returning nearly their entire roster, the Trojans looked determined to avenge last year’s 70-43 season-opening loss to the Dutch from the start. Atlantic started the game on a 7-0 run to take an early lead. Led by Patyn Harder, who had 10 first-half points, the Trojans dominated the opening quarter. They played staunch defense, moved the ball well, and were hitting the deep ball. Harder and Mckenna Schroeder combined for three 3-points in the opening frame contributing to their 22-5 first quarter lead

Although Pella pushed back in the second quarter, the Trojans were still in full control. Although scoring from the floor was down, Atlantic was able to get to the free-throw line.  The Trojans went 10-16 from the charity stripe as a team in the first half. This included Payton McLaren going 4-6 from the line in the second quarter.  Feeling confident about their game, Atlantic would take a 33-22 lead into the half.

Well into the third quarter, not much had changed. In fact, Atlantic was able to push their lead to 16. However, with 2:47 left in the third quarter, things started to swing in Pella’s direction. Where the Trojan’s ball movement was precise in the first half, Atlantic struggled with turnovers in the second. In addition to some unforced turnovers, the Dutch defense was able to clamp down. The Dutch allowed just 6 points in the final 10:47 of the game. Kamryn Long led the charge for Pella with 12 fourth quarter points as the Dutch crawled back to tie the game at 50-50. Then at 4:38 of the fourth quarter, Jenna Altman hit two free throws to give Pella their first lead of the game. The Dutch would close out the game on a 14-2 run.

Despite the disappointing loss, there are plenty of positive takeaways for the Trojans, including their fantastic start.

That’s Atlantic head coach Dan Vargason who although pleased with their start felt that turnovers played a key factor in the second half.

Vargason also said his team’s scoring capabilities were another positive takeaway. Although Paytn Harder led the game with 21 points, Katrina Williams and Payton McLaren both finished with 8 points while Schroeder, Zoey Kirchhoff, and Lila Weiderstein all got on the scoresheet.

Atlantic will be back in action when they host Denison-Schleswig on Tuesday.
