Southwest Valley looking to rebound against Griswold

Sports

November 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The (0-1) Southwest Valley Girls basketball team are looking to win the second game of their young season, after a 60-34 loss to Shenandoah. It was a contest that saw Southwest Valley down 36-15 at half and low percentage shots from across the floor. Head Coach of the Timberwolves Mike Cormack noted the inexperience and lack of size was a major reason why his team struggled against a lengthier Fillies squad.

Even with a loss, the Timberwolves had a few positive takeaways from Tuesday’s game. Players like Hailey Randall who scored 16 points, shot 54% from the field, and went 2-4 from behind the arc. Mackenzie Fast also contributed with 7 boards and 11 points. The offensive effort from Tuesday night stood out to Coach Cormack.

Now the Timberwolves are gearing for a familiar foe they’ve scrimmaged before in this past offseason. The Griswold Tigers will start the season by looking to a few familiar faces like Seniors Karly Millikan and Madison Rush. Millikan had 147 rebounds, 23 steals, and 5 blocks in her sophomore campaign, but sat out her junior year due to an injury. Rush last year had 13 completed 3-pointers, 25 rebounds, with 7 assists, and 7 steals. Coach Cormack knows that even though Griswold only won two games a season ago, that this is a team he cannot overlook.

A key for the Timberwolves to come away with a win on the road Thursday night is to emphasize outside shooting. Southwest Valley shot 30% on their three pointers with only 13 attempts. Coach Cormack would also like to see his team continue to build on their confidence, because he knows they can compete with any team in the state.

Tipoff between the Southwest Valley and Griswold doubleheader is set for 6:00 p.m. KJAN will bring you the coverage starting with the pregame show at 5:50 p.m.

(Radio Iowa) – Human remains found in northeast Iowa are believed to those of a Manchester man who’s been missing for years, but confirmation may not come quickly. The Delaware County Sheriff John LeClere says they do not have a timeline on how long it will take to identify the remains. LeClere says information about the condition of the remains is not being released at this time. Pheasant hunters found the remains in a field west of Manchester earlier this month.

Authorities believe the remains are those of 55-year old Brian “Farmer” Burns of Manchester, who was reported missing nearly ten years ago. The remains have been transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and autopsy.

Nighttime construction work to place bridge beams for the new bridge at the I-35/I-80/I-235 east systems interchange will require closing the following areas overnight on Tuesday, Dec. 5 and again on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The closures are expected to begin at 10 p.m. and run through 5 a.m. the next morning.

  • All lanes of westbound I-80

8 Hawkeyes Recognized By Big Ten

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Eight University of Iowa football student-athletes on offense were recognized by the Big Ten Conference with postseason honors on Wednesday.

Three Hawkeye offensive linemen were selected third-team All-Big Ten: C Logan Jones (coaches), OG Connor Colby (coaches; media) and OG Nick DeJong (coaches). Jones and DeJong were also honorable mention honorees by the media voting group.

Five additional Hawkeyes garnered honorable mention recognition, including TE Erick All (coaches); OG Rusty Feth (coaches; media); OT Gennings Dunker (media); Leshon Williams (coaches; media); OT Mason Richman (coaches; media).

Jones and Colby each started 11 games during the regular season and DeJong has started six games, but has been a valuable piece, seeing time at both guard positions and as a reserve tackle.  The trio paved the way for a rushing attack that has averaged 122.9 yards per game in 2023.

All is Iowa’s third-leading receiver despite missing the final five games because of injury. He made 21 catches for 299 yards and a team-best three touchdowns before suffering a season-ending injury in the road win at Wisconsin. It is the second time All has earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten recognition (2021 at Michigan).

Williams earns his first career honor after rushing for a team-high 779 yards and one touchdown during the regular season. The Illinois native has three 100-yard games, including a 174-yard performance in the road win in Madison. He had an 82-yard touchdown run in the game — Iowa’s longest rush since 1997.

Feth, Dunker and Richman each earned honorable mention recognition. Feth started seven games in his first season in Iowa City, while Dunker and Richman were mainstays at right tackle and left tackle, respectively. The Hawkeyes rushed for 200 yards at Wisconsin — the most since 2008 — and the rushing attack put up 179 yards against Rutgers and 163 at Nebraska against two top-10 rushing defenses.

Feth is an honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection after earning second-team All-MAC honors in 2022. It is the third straight year Richman has earned honorable mention all-league honors.

Iowa, the Big Ten West Division champion for the second time in three years, will face No. 2 Michigan in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. (CT) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The game will be televised on FOX.
