Arraignment and Trial dates set in father/son Bluffs murder case

News

September 4th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A Council Bluffs man charged with shooting his father to death will be arraigned on a charge of 1st degree murder later this month. 21-year old Sean Schendel allegedly shot his father, 55-year old Robert R. Schendel several times in his father’s home on Aug. 12th, then allegedly stole his van and withdrew money from his father’s bank account. The Daily NonPareil reports Sean Schendel will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 28th.

Schendel has not yet turned in a written plea. If he does plead not guilty to murder and theft charges, his trial could start as early as 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 17th. Court documents indicate Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilber said he and Deputy County Attorney John Jacobmeier would lead the prosecution. Jennifer Solberg will be Schendel’s attorney.

Schendel, who was found in Sterling, Colorado along with his father’s missing van, was arrested on Aug. 15th. Schendel was brought back to Council Bluffs on Aug. 21st and remains in Pottawattamie County Jail on just over $1-million bond. In addition to the murder charge, Schendel faces two counts of second-degree theft.

Charges against man in Sioux City kidnapping case dismissed

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Prosecutors have dropped all charges against an 18-year-old man who was accused of kidnapping and assaulting two men over a dispute about drug dealings. Isaiah Mothershed had been charged with two counts of kidnapping and two counts of willful injury.

Mothershed had been accused of binding and blindfolding two men who met him to buy marijuana on July 7. Court documents had said he burned their faces with a hot object and struck one of them with a shotgun. Authorities said Mothershed had accused them of helping someone steal his marijuana.

The documents said Mothershed forced the men into the trunk of his car, but they escaped when he stopped and left the car to go into a house. Woodbury County Attorney Patrick Jennings, who filed a motion to dismiss the charges Tuesday, said the investigation is ongoing to determine Mothershed’s involvement in the incident.

Exira-EHK and CAM set for exciting Week Two 8-Man battle

Sports

September 4th, 2015 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans and CAM Cougars were both big winners in week one 8-man football.  The Cougars went on the road and pounded out a win against rival Adair-Casey 66-8 while the Spartans stayed home and forged a win against Nishnabotna 35-6.

Both teams would like to build on that week 1 success but it will be a tough task for both teams.  Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen spoke with KJAN after their win against Nishnabotna and he expects CAM to be a tough opponent.

“We are going to have to get better in a hurry. Next week we go down to CAM and Joe has a good ball team this year. He has some bigger guys and some experience so we are going to have our hands full.” said Petersen.

The Spartans will rely on Senior Brady Hansen at the Quarterback spot whom will look to build off a strong performance against the Blue Devils. Hansen threw for 101 yards and two scores and also rushed for 101 yards and another score.  Coach Petersen knows he has the experience to lead.

“He has been there, Brady did it a year ago.  He played, came in for Drew Peppers and did a great job.  He throws a great ball and he’s got a great really good idea and concept of what our offense is trying to do. We’ll be fine with what Brady does, he’s a great Quarterback.” said Petersen.

The Spartans will have to deal with CAM Senior Quarterback Drew Ticknor.  Ticknor threw for 77 yards and 3 touchdowns while also rushing for 48 yards and a score in that week one win over the Bombers.

Exira EHK and CAM are set to kickoff at 7:00pm tonight in Anita.

Atlantic travels to Denison for Hawkeye 10 Football

Sports

September 4th, 2015 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans will travel to Denison tonight looking for their first win of the season after an opening week loss to Clarinda 34-14. Atlantic Head Coach Eric Waldstein took away some positives from the first game of the year and thinks progress is being made.

“We’re much improved compared to where we were a year ago. And for the most part, probably 90% of the time, we are doing everything right. It’s just a matter of taking care of the little things.” Waldstein said.

Atlantic faces a Denison team that fell in week one 44-7 to Harlan.  Monarch Quarterback Brandon Brotherton was sacked 4 times in that game and Coach Waldstein said the Trojans will try to keep the pressure on him.

“Yeah that’s what we do as a defense.  We like to bring pressure and bring man coverage. Everybody that we played against last year, they know what to expect from us and that’s what your going to get is man coverage and lots of pressure.  Hopefully we are able to take advantage of some of their lack of experience on offense and make some big plays on D.” said Waldstein

Denison Head Coach Chad Van Kley thought his defense played well at times last week in short field situations and he wants them to stay disciplined this week against Atlantic.

“They have some people that played last year. They were a little young last year, they have some guys that bring experience back.  They have some athletes… that when the ball is in their hands in open space they will make some things happen…Our job is to try to contain it. We have to try to minimize their open field and really rally to the football and be disciplined in our defensive approach to them.” said Van Kley.

You can hear more from both coaches during our pregame coverage starting and 6:30pm and you can also hear an extended interview with Coach Waldstein on Trojan Preview at 4:45pm.  The Trojans and the Monarchs kick off tonight at 7:30pm on KJAN.

Iowa State hosts UNI in crucial opener

Sports

September 4th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Hardly anyone outside of the state will pay much attention to the Northern Iowa-Iowa State game. Yet it’s an opener with big ramifications for both programs. Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads enters his seventh season in Ames under great scrutiny after back-to-back 3-9 and 2-10 seasons; including two straight defeats to FCS opponents on opening day. A third such loss — on a night when the Cyclones will host their largest crowd in school history — could doom Rhoads’ tenure at Iowa State.

Northern Iowa opens 2015 ranked 10th in the FCS and eager to make a long playoff push. Plus, the Panthers know they can win at Jack Trice Stadium. They did it two years ago — and in 2007 as well.

Hawkeyes open 2015 with dangerous Illinois State

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — C.J. Beathard has been waiting for his chance to be Iowa’s starting quarterback for years. He’s getting his wish this season. Beathard will make just his second career start — and his first at Kinnick Stadium — when the Hawkeyes host FCS school Illinois State on Saturday.

Beathard, a redshirt junior who spent the last two years backing up now-Michigan quarterback Jake Rudock, was anointed the starter in January. Iowa is hoping that Beathard’s strong arms, quick feet and increased knowledge of the playbook can help lift its offense out of the doldrums in 2015.
