Two southwest Iowa men were transported to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha Monday night, following a rollover accident northwest of Malvern. The Iowa State Patrol says 46-year old Robert Gene Ryan, of Shenandoah, was flown by helicopter to the hospital after he was ejected from a 1994 Mazda pickup truck. The vehicle was traveling west on Highway 34, when it entered the south ditch and crossed 288th Street, before rolling over. Another man in the vehicle 29-year old Lyle Francis Stogdill, also from Shenandoah, was transported by Malvern Rescue to Creighton. Neither man was wearing a seat belt. The accident happened at around 10:50-p.m. Officials say it’s not clear which man was driving the vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A terrorism charge filed against a Sioux City man over comments he made on his Facebook page has been dismissed. Woodbury County prosecutors say Gabriel Rodriguez wrote suicidal and homicidal-themed messages between Aug. 2 and Aug.9. According to court documents, Rodriguez asked if he needed to “shoot up a mall before people understood.” Assistant County Attorney Terry Ganzel says there was insufficient evidence to meet the legal requirement of the crime in order to prosecute Rodriguez.
Ganzel says words that don’t constitute a true threat are protected under the First Amendment. He says there isn’t enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Rodriguez made “true” threats and, even if they were, that the act was “imminent.” Rodriguez’s attorney didn’t immediately comment.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — This year’s corn harvest is ahead of schedule with 4 percent in already compared with just 1 percent at the same time last year. The harvest is three to four weeks ahead of schedule in most of the corn belt because an unusually warm spring allowed farmers to plant earlier. Most expected a good year then, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture has been reducing its estimates of the nation’s harvest amid a severe drought centered over the Midwest. It now says it expects the least amount of corn since 2006, although the tally won’t be certain until the harvest is done. It is significantly ahead of schedule in some places. The USDA reported Monday that in Tennessee and Missouri, the harvest was already 18 percent complete.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was on the field with the rest of his teammates Monday for the first time since signing his franchise tender last week. NFL rules prevent Bowe from practicing in pads until Tuesday, but he spent time working with quarterback Matt Cassel and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Bowe has been seeking a long-term deal and skipped the offseason program and the start of training camp. He signed his franchise tender on Friday, which means he’ll play under a one-year contract worth about $9.5 million. Bowe caught 81 passes for 1,159 yards and five touchdowns last season. The former first-round draft pick has at least 1,000 yards receiving four of his five seasons in the league.
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs’ fire chief says children playing with a lighter caused a deadly house fire over the weekend. Fire Chief Alan Byers also says there were no working smoke detectors in the house. Four-year-old Leland Johnson died in the fire Saturday morning after being trapped in an upstairs bedroom. Firefighters reached the boy, but he died at the hospital. His mother and two other children safely escaped the house. Byers says the tragedy drives home the need for more fire safety education. He says the fire department has free smoke detectors that firefighters will install for residents. Council Bluffs residents who wish to have a smoke detector checked or have detectors installed, should call 712-328-4672.
