September 24th, 2013 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Carlos Beltran homered, Adam Wainwright earned his 18th win and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Washington 4-3 on Monday night, eliminating the Nationals from playoff contention.

Looking for their first NL Central title since 2009, the Cardinals maintained a two-game lead over Cincinnati and Pittsburgh and reduced their magic number to four.

All three teams are headed to the postseason. The Reds and Pirates both won Monday night, clinching at least a wild-card berth when Washington lost.

St. Louis secured no worse than a wild card on Sunday.

Iowa Awarded 2017 Solheim Cup

Sports

September 23rd, 2013 by Jim Field

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The LPGA announced Monday that the 2017 Solheim Cup will be held at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club in Iowa.

The biennial event, which is similar to the Ryder Cup pitting European and American golfers, was held in Colorado last month. Europe won 18-10.

The Des Moines Golf and Country Club hosted the U.S. Senior Open Championship in 1999, drawing more than 250,000 fans. Metro Des Moines has also hosted a Champions Tour event, the Principal Charity Classic, since 2001.

Though that tournament moved from Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines to the Wakonda Club near downtown Des Moines this year, it remained among the more well-attended events on the senior tour.
