The President of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is calling on members to share their opinions on a host of issues prior to the ICA’s policy meeting in December. Ed Greiman (GRY-man) of Garner says one of the hot topics up for debate among cattlemen involves ethanol and the Renewable Fuels Standard. The ICA has historically supported the ethanol industry, but with talk of increasing the percentage of ethanol in gasoline, Greiman wants to know if that support is still there.
“The real question I have of our members is…do we support the mandate maybe going to 15-percent? We hear a lot of rumblings about that and I do believe that debate is going to happen sometime in the next year,” Greiman says. Ethanol is made from corn and some livestock producers are concerned that a move to E-15 will raise the cost of feed. “I would like more direction from our members,” Greiman says. “How do they feel about increasing the mandate?”
Another issue is Country of Origin Labeling on meat. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Department is pushing for labeling to be mandatory, while many in the cattle industry want labeling to be voluntary. Greiman wants to hear from Iowans on that issue as well. “I just want to make sure that we have policy in place at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association that represents what Iowa cattlemen, across the state, really are thinking,” Greiman says.

Sheriff’s Deputies responding to a reported fight in Red Oak early this (Wednesday) morning, ended up making an arrested based on a warrant. The Sheriff’s Department says authorities were called to a residence in the 2400 block of north 8th Street in Red Oak, just before 1-a.m. 23-year old Stewart Russell Andersen, of Red Oak was taken into custody on an Iowa State Patrol warrant for Failure to Pay/Failure to Appear, on a seat belt charge. His bond was set at $500. Andersen was being held in the Montgomery County Jail.
Police in Red Oak arrested a local man early this (Wednesday) morning, on a burglary charge. 23-year old Hans Alvie Andersen, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at a residence in the 2400 block of north 8th Street, at around 1-a.m. Andersen was charged with Burglary in the 2nd degree and brought to the Montgomery County Jail, where he was being held on $10,000 bond.
A Red Oak Police Officer was cited for Failure to Stop in an assured clear distance, following an accident Monday afternoon. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says the accident involving a 2013 Dodge Charger owned by the City of Red Oak’s Police Department and driven by Officer Derrick Walter, and 2012 Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Kenneth Bruce, of Red Oak, happened at around 12:35-p.m. in the 600 block of north Broadway Street, in Red Oak.
Officials say Bruce’ pickup was stopped at the intersection, waiting for the light to change, when the officer, who was traveling in the same direction, failed to observe the trucks brake lights. In addition, due to the wet road conditions, Officer Walter was unable to stop his car in-time. It collided with the rear of the pickup, causing $4,400 to the patrol car, and a little over $1,000 damage to the pickup. No injuries were reported.

The three winners of the inaugural Bob Feller Act of Valor Award were announced today. Peter Fertig of New York man created the award in tribute to the former Cleveland Indians pitcher from Van Meter, who struck out 17 batters at the age of 17, and was a decorated World War Two anti-aircraft gunner. Fertig consulted with baseball executives, the U-S Navy and Feller’s widow. “I wanted to find a way to honor Bob Feller, a true American patriot and a hero,” Fertig says. He says it’s important to remember what Feller did on and off the baseball diamond.
“Bob was a major league baseball player, rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, and he was a baseball Hall of Famer. My job is to keep his memory alive of what he did. If we forget shame on us,” Fertig explains. Fertig is the president of the award’s foundation which will choose the winners each year. The Act of Valor Award goes to a Hall of Famer, an active baseball player and a Naval officer — each representing a part of what Feller was.
“Bob Feller was a phenom at the age of 23, he had already pitched six years in the major leagues and on December seventh, 1941 he never hesitated, he never wavered, he joined the hardest hit part of our military at that time which was the United States Navy,” Fertig says. The inaugural winners of the award are Yankee’s legend Yogi Berra, Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander, and Chief Petty Officer Garth Sinclair. Berra is now 88, and is cited for his career with the New York Yankees and also for participating in the D-Day invasion in World War Two.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matt Holliday and pinch-hitter Shane Robinson hit the first home runs of the NL championship series, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 on Tuesday night to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven matchup. In a series starved for offense, the Cardinals scored as many runs as they did in the first three games combined, when the teams totaled nine runs.
Hitless in his previous 22 at-bats at Dodger Stadium, Holliday sent a two-run shot off Ricky Nolasco an estimated 426 feet into left field, capping a three-run third that gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
Game 5 is this (Wednesday) afternoon at Dodger Stadium, with the Cardinals one win from the World Series. Zack Greinke is set to start for the Dodgers against Joe Kelly.
