We’ll bring you Atlantic @ Glenwood live tonight in high school football on KJAN. Glenwood has to win to have an outside shot at the playoffs and Atlantic stands in their way. Glenwood comes in to the game 4-4 overall and 2-3 in district play while Atlantic is 1-7 and 0-5.

We continue our high school football coverage tonight at 6:00 with “Who’s Gonna Win?” Join Matt Mullenix, Doug Leonard, Chris Parks and Jim Field as we look at some area match-ups. An event scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) is designed to tackle Iowa’s fastest growing form of substance abuse. Dale Woolery, with the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy, says there will be around 80 sites in Iowa where people can safely dispose of their old or unwanted prescription medicines. Woolery says the “Take Back” events will keep pills from being flushed or dropped down a drain and potentially harming the environment. “And, we’re getting (these drugs) out of circulation to hopefully prevent the abuse of these medicines,” Woolery says.
The drop-off sites in Iowa are among thousands across the country as part of National Prescription Take Back Day. The event is sponsored twice each year by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Woolery says the drugs taken back in Iowa have been on the rise. “That may mean there’s increasing awareness and better understanding that there is a safer, better way to get rid of our medications. At least we hope so,” Woolery says.
During the last Take Back day in April, Iowans dropped off an all-time high amount of prescription drugs. “Nearly four tons of unused medicines were disposed of at around 100 sites around the state,” Woolery says. Most of the Take Back sites in Iowa will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Take Back locations can be found through a search on the website D-E-A dot gov (dea.gov).

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa is giving priority to new farmers leasing public land owned by the state. The state Department of Natural Resources says available land that’s managed by the agency can be viewed online beginning in early November. Farmers will have a month to review the details before the agency begins awarding leases.
A participating farmer must be a permanent Iowa resident, have appropriate skills and have a net worth of less than about $691,000. They must also be certified as a beginning farmer. The change is part of legislation that passed this past spring.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Veteran Iowa Republicans are quietly working to wrest control of the state GOP from libertarian and Christian conservative factions they blame for alienating longtime donors. Led by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, these Republicans tell the Associated Press they want to grow the party by seeking pragmatic solutions over ideological purity. The Iowa GOP has experienced significant infighting since a supporter of then presidential candidate Ron Paul won the state party chairmanship following the 2012 election.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governor Terry Branstad is suspending the specific hours that drivers can transport propane in Iowa. Branstad announced the emergency declaration yesterday. It goes into effect today and ends November 7th.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa business owners can begin applying for a new property tax credit that was part of a tax reform package approved by the Legislature and signed by the governor earlier this year. The property tax credit applies to certain commercial, industrial, and railroad properties. Applications for credit against 2013 property tax assessments must be received by the county or city assessor by January 15th.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Sioux City workers are hauling in dirt to historic Floyd Cemetery to fill in a gully and make sure erosion doesn’t expose any graves. City officials tell the Journal the ongoing project involves bringing in soil and extending drainage tubes. The work should eventually slow runoff and erosion.
BOSTON (AP) — The pitching was strong, the hitting was timely and the fielding was crisp as the St. Louis Cardinals bounced back from Wednesday’s loss and tied the World Series at a game apiece. Rookie Michael Wacha remains unbeaten this month after combining with two relievers on a four-hitter in the Redbirds’ 4-2 triumph over the Red Sox in Boston. Wacha improved to 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA in the postseason, although his earned run average was 0.33 until David Ortiz hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. Wacha allowed three hits in six innings.
But the Cardinals put together a three-run seventh after Ortiz went deep for the second straight night, scoring the tying and go-ahead runs on Matt Carpenter’s sac -fly with the bases loaded. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia mishandled the throw to the plate and pitcher Craig Breslow threw wildly to third base, bringing home the tiebreaking run. Carlos Beltran followed with an RBI single later in the seventh.
Matt Holliday tripled and scored on Yadier Molina’s grounder in the fourth inning for the Cardinals’ first run. Cards setup man Carlos Martinez struck out three while tossing two hitless innings. Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the ninth on just 11 pitches to notch the save.
The series will shift to St. Louis for Game 3 on Saturday and Game 4 Sunday. Red Sox manager John Farrell has announced that Jake Peavy will start the third game, followed by Clay Buchholz. Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn will start those games for the Redbirds. Jon Lester tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings in Boston’s 8-1 victory in Game 1, and then spent Thursday denying he had an illegal substance in his glove. Lester says his glove contained only rosin, a legal substance found on pitcher’s mounds.
A Cardinals minor leaguer posted a screen shot on Twitter showing a green substance on Lester’s glove and wrote: “Jon Lester using a little Vaseline inside the glove tonight?”
