Today: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 8am, otherwise Mostly sunny, with a high near 56. Windy, with a west northwest wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 21 to 26 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 38 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 29. Windy, with a west northwest wind 17 to 22 mph decreasing to 11 to 16 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 51. West northwest wind 7 to 11 mph becoming south southwest in the afternoon.

Monday Night :Mostly clear, with a low around 27. South wind 6 to 8 mph.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 53. Breezy, with a south wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph.

Cass County Community Foundation grants awarded

The Chair of the Cass County Community Foundation has announced that $23,400 in grants have been awarded to several non-profit agencies in the County.

According to CCCF Chair Nicholas Hunt, the largest grants ($3,700 each) was awarded to the City of Massena for the purchase of a “Jaws of Life” tool for emergency responders, and the Lewis 1st Responders & Firefighters Association, for the purchase of turnout gear for the department’s members. The City of Griswold received a grant for $3,200, which will be used to replace worn or damaged picnic tables in the City’s public parks.

Other grant recipients include:

  • $2,800 to the Cass County Historical Museum for new heating, and an air conditioning unit for the donated building.
  • $2,000 each to the Jack and Jill Preschool for the purchase of 6 Ipads and a projector for the classroom, and the City of Lewis, for the installation of new playground set in the City Park.
  • $1,500 to the Anita Child Care Center for room dividers and equipment for increased enrollment.
  • $1,000 each to: The Anita Wellness Center for sports equipment for its Youth Program; The City Marne, for the replacement of old playground equipment in the City Park and to improve the area; and the Griswold Sports Boosters for the replacement of a broken, storm-damaged flagpole at the Griswold Athletic Facility.
  • $750 each for: The Atlantic Coca-Cola Center & Museum, for an upgrade of cabinets; & the City of Lewis Public Library, for a meeting room table.

Each of those nonprofit organizations had submitted applications to the Cass County Community Foundation by the September 1st deadline. The $23,400 total includes $800 to the Cass County Historical Society, $500 to the Griswold Sports Booster Club and $700 to the City of Griswold, from the Griswold Community Development Endowment Fund, and $500 from the Triumph Endowed Funds for Cass County, to the City of Marne.

All grantees met the criteria as Cass County nonprofit agencies or organizations with charitable missions in the areas of civic, cultural, health, education and social services.  Only organizations providing services in Cass County were eligible. Cass County agency representatives received their checks on November 15th.

Saint Mary’s defeats Drake 67-63, improves to 4-0

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) – Beau Levesque scored 16 points and Brad Waldow added 15 with 13 rebounds as Saint Mary’s defeated Drake 67-63 Saturday night. The Gaels (4-0) opened the game on a 16-6 run and led by as much as 16 early in the second half before Drake surged back to pull within two with 6:42 remaining. Stephen Holt hit a 3-pointer and Levesque made a layup to put Saint Mary’s ahead by five.

Another layup from Levesque increased the lead to six, and Waldow blocked Karl Madison’s ensuing layup attempt with 1:48 remaining. Richard Carter sank a 3-pointer to make the score 63-60, but Levesque and Jordan Giusti each hit two late free throws to hold off the Bulldogs (2-1). Carter hit a last-second three to finish with 18 points and Daddy Ugbede added 11.

Waldow had a career-high five blocks and was one of four Gaels to score in double figures.

THOMAS JOHNS BARTLETT, 65, of Oakland, died Fri., Nov. 15th, at home. A Prayer service for THOMAS BARTLETT will be held 6-p.m. Wed., Nov. 20th, at the Rieken-Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland.

Visitation with the family will follow the prayer service Wednesday, and will be held until 8-p.m.

Interment will be at a later date.

JANET STAPLETON, 70, of Fontanelle, died Fri., Nov. 15th, at the Community Care Center, in Stuart. Funeral services for JANET STAPLETON will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Nov. 20th, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle has the arrangements.

Family Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 19th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Janet Stapleton memorial fund to be established by the family at a later date.

Burial will be the Fontanelle Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal services at the cemetery.

MELVIN LAUGHERY, 81, of Fontanelle, died Thu., Nov. 14th, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. Funeral services for MELVIN LAUGHERY will be held on Monday, November 18, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fontanelle United Methodist Church with burial in the Fontanelle Cemetery.  Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle has the arrangements.

Pastors Jerry Hoff and Cathy Nutting officiate the service.  A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal services at the cemetery.

Bluffs woman arrested on assault charge in Red Oak

Police in Red Oak say a 32-year old woman was arrested Saturday night on an assault charge. Marcia Lynn Funkhauser, of Council Bluffs, was arrested at around 11:45-p.m. Saturday, after officers in Red Oak responded to an incident of simple assault in the 400 block of Highland Avenue. Funkhauser was being held in the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center on a $300 cash bond.

Glenwood man arrested Sunday morning on Theft charge in Montgomery Co.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest early this (Sunday) morning of Brandon M. Smith, of Glenwood. Smith was taken into custody at around 4:45-a.m. on a warrant for Theft in the 5th Degree (a Simple Misdemeanor). He was transported to the Mills/Montgomery County line without incident and brought by Montgomery County deputies to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center, where Smith was being held on $300 bond.

Corning man arrested following accident investigation

An investigation into a vehicle on its top Saturday morning in Adams County led to the arrest of a Corning man. The Adams County Sheriff’s Department says 28-year old Marcus Corcoran was charged with OWI/1st offense, after authorities received a call at around 4-a.m. Saturday, about a car on its roof in the ditch at the 26 mile marker of Highway 148. Corcoran told deputies he was traveling south on Highway 148 and swerved to miss a deer, but an investigation determined he had been drinking.

After Corcoran was brought to the Adams County Jail and searched, he was found to be in possession of a pipe used to smoke marijuana. He was subsequently charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
