AMU Board adopts resolutions approving power/water rate increases

News

December 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Officials with Atlantic Municipal Utilities have approved resolutions adopting increased electric and water rate fees. The action came during the AMU Board of Trustee’s meeting Monday night. AMU General Manager Steve Tjepkes said during their meeting on Nov. 18th, the AMU Board tentatively approved the increases, and a public hearing was needed prior to final action being taken on putting the new rates into effect. Notices were published in the local paper explaining the rate change and reasons for it.

It’s the second consecutive year for rate increases from AMU.  Last year, electric rates went up 12-percent, and the water rate was increased 4-percent. The Board Monday approved a 5-percent across the board increase (residential and commercial) in electric rates. Tjepkes said the electric rate increase is due to EPA regulations for the coal-fired power plant in Council Bluffs, from which AMU receives additional energy. AMU’s cost related to the Council Bluffs plant improvements and EPA compliance will amount to $500-thousand next year, and about $1.2-million in 2015.

Tjepkes said there will also be a 5-percent across the board increase in water rates. The increase in Atlantic’s water rates he said, is driven by changes that require parts of the system to be lead-free, which entails the removal of some parts and replacement of those items with non-lead parts. Those costs are estimated at 30-to 35-thousand dollars.

There were no written or public comments during the meeting with regard to the increases. The Board’s action means the average household in Atlantic would see a One-dollar increase in their water bill each month, while the electric bill would increase two-to three-dollars per month. In other business, the AMU Board approved a resolution adopting their Calendar Year 2014 Budget.

Chiefs unlikely to have Houston back for Redskins

Sports

December 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs coach Andy Reid did not sound optimistic that he’ll have leading pass rusher Justin Houston back for next Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins. Houston dislocated his right elbow two weeks ago against San Diego and missed Sunday’s 35-28 loss to Denver, a game in which the Chiefs failed to sack quarterback Peyton Manning.  Reid said Monday it would be “quite a feat” if Houston could play in Washington.

Left tackle Branden Albert hyperextended his left knee against the Broncos, while tight end Anthony Fasano sustained a concussion. Reid did not say with any certainty whether either of them will be available against the Redskins.  Fasano missed four games earlier this season with an ankle injury.

News

December 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A Nebraska man accused of allegedly performing sex acts with two girls in Mills County, Iowa and Sarpy Count, in Neb., has waived his right to a speedy trial. The Daily NonPareil reports 64-year old John Robert Schondelmeyer of Bellevue, Neb., is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 25th, 2014. The man pleaded not guilty in Mills County to charges of two counts of second-degree sexual abuse and two counts of lascivious acts with a child, last month.

He is charged in Sarpy County as a fugitive from justice, two felony counts of sexual assault of a child younger than 12 years of age and two felony counts of incest. The alleged incidents – which include incest – occurred several times in September at Schondelmeyer’s home in Bellevue and at a residence in Iowa, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Both cases involve the same two children, ages 7 and 8.

If convicted in Mills County, he faces up to 50 years in prison for the two counts of second-degree sexual abuse and up to 10 years for each count of lascivious acts with a child. In Sarpy County, he faces up to two life sentences in prison for the sexual assault charges and up to 40 years in prison and a $50,000 fine for each of the incest charges.

Schondelmeyer’s bond was reduced from $70,000 to $35,000. He is being held in the Mills County Jail.

The “Unselfie” Introduced for 2nd Annual Giving Tuesday

News

December 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

MINNEAPOLIS – With Black Friday and Cyber Monday now in the books, people around Minnesota and the country are being asked to think of others on this “Giving Tuesday.” According to co-founder Henry Timms, that can include donating money or time to a favorite charitable group, while a new spin this year is having people post what he calls “unselfies” on social media.

“Share a picture of you doing something useful for others. Share a picture of a cause that matters deeply to you. Do something unselfish around Giving Tuesday,” Timms urged. Among the nonprofits taking part locally is the Iowa 4-H Foundation, whose administrative specialist Brooke Young said their focus is on making a difference for Iowa youth. “And our mission is to provide funds for many opportunities for Iowa 4-H’ers, including recognition, 4-H trips, scholarships and other special programs throughout the year.”

Young said the opportunities provided by the Iowa 4-H Foundation help young people develop skills in areas such as communication, critical thinking and leadership. “It’s providing them skills that they will use, not only in 4-H but then in life after 4-H.”

Since its first annual event last year, Giving Tuesday has grown to include more than 8000 partners in all 50 states. More information on the Iowa 4-H Foundation can be found online at bit.ly/186s5wH.
