A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM CST THIS EVENING FOR: SAC- CRAWFORD-CARROLL-AUDUBON-GUTHRIE-CASS-ADAIR-ADAMS-TAYLOR COUNTIES, AND UNTIL 6-PM FOR: SHELBY-POTTAWATTAMIE-MILLS-MONTGOMERY-FREMONT AND PAGE COUNTIES.

* SHORT TERM TRENDS…LIGHT SNOW WILL BEGIN BETWEEN 3AM AND SUNRISE…WITH ACCUMULATING SNOW AND TRAVEL IMPACTS BEGINNING SHORTLY AFTER THOSE TIMES. THE SNOW WILL END IN THE LATE AFTERNOON OR EARLY EVENING TODAY.

* STORM TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...ACCUMULATIONS WILL RANGE FROM 2 TO 4 INCHES…WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE NORTH AND WEST.

* WINDS/VISIBILITY…SOUTHEAST WINDS OF 10 TO 15 MPH WILL CAUSE MINOR BLOWING OF SNOW…REDUCING VISIBILITY TO UNDER A MILE AT TIMES WHILE SNOW IS FALLING.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Frigid cold continues to hover over Iowa as the state as snow falls this morning. The National Weather Service says snow is expected after midnight and will likely continue throughout Sunday, with accumulations of 4 to 5 inches in western Iowa. Most of the state is expecting between 1 and 3 inches.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a home near Lake Manawa in western Iowa’s Council Bluffs. The Daily Nonpareil reports that firefighters were called to the house around 2:25 a.m. Friday. No one was injured in the blaze.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Salvation Army of Mason City has received an anonymous donation of two gold Krugerrand coins, restoring plans for the organization to hold an auction for the coins. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that the charitable organization received the coins Thursday. The South African gold coins can be valued from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Melvin Ejim scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half and overtime, and 17th-ranked Iowa State rallied from 18 points down to beat Northern Iowa 91-82 yesterday for the Cyclones’ best start in 10 years. Georges Niang added a career-high 22 points for ISU, who also snapped a 3-game losing streak against their cross-state rivals.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Melvin Ejim scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half and overtime, and 17th-ranked Iowa State rallied from 18 points down to beat Northern Iowa 91-82 on Saturday for its best start in 10 years. Georges Niang added a career-high 22 points for the Cyclones (7-0), who also snapped a 3-game losing streak against the rival Panthers (3-5).

Iowa State went on a 23-2 run midway through the second half to erase a 49-31 deficit. But Northern Iowa’s Seth Tuttle banked in a 3 with 1.3 seconds left to force OT. Ejim responded with back-to-back 3s to put the Cyclones ahead 82-75 with 1:18 left.

Nate Buss had 23 points and Wes Washpun scored 18 with eight assists for Northern Iowa.

No. 23 Iowa beats Drake 83-66

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Melsahn Basabe had a season-high 15 points and No. 23 Iowa cruised past Drake 83-66 on a neutral floor Saturday night. Devyn Marble and freshman Peter Jok each scored 14 for Hawkeyes (9-1), who won their fourth straight over the intrastate-rival Bulldogs. Iowa closed the first half on a 10-0 run and never looked back, stretching its lead to 23 points with 5:18 left.

Chris Caird led the Bulldogs (6-2) with 21 points. Their winning streak was snapped at four games. Iowa improved to 57-10 against Drake, which shot just 31 percent in the second half.

House in western Iowa destroyed by fire

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a home near Lake Manawa in western Iowa’s Council Bluffs.  The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports that firefighters were called to the house around 2:25 a.m. Friday.  Heavy smoke and flames had already engulfed the home when fire crews arrived.

Fire Marshal Curtis McKeon says freezing temperatures hindered the effort to fight the fire, as water in hoses began to freeze. Investigators believe the fire started in a bedroom.  McKeon says the home was a total loss, with heavy smoke, fire and water damage. No one was injured in the blaze.

ELAINE WEDEMEYER, 95, of Atlantic (& formerly of Adair), died Sat., Dec. 7th, at the Heritage House in Atlantic. Funeral services for ELAINE WEDEMEYER will be held 10:30-a.m. Thu., Dec. 12th, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be from 5-to 7pm Wed., Dec. 11th, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

ELAINE WEDEMEYER is survived by:

Her children – Larry (Arlene) Wedemeyer, of Anita; Joyce Johnston, of Stuart; Marilyn (Carl) White, of Clive, and Lynn (Marilynn) Wedemeyer, of Owasso, OK.

Her brother – Ronald (Alice) Smith, of Council Bluffs.

12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

BRUCE COENEN, 52, of Harlan, died Thu., Dec. 4th, as the result of an automobile accident. A Mass of Christian Burial Service for BRUCE COENEN will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Dec. 10th, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is on Mon., Dec. 9th, from 4-to 9-pm, with a Wake Service at 6-p.m.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

FRANK WEGNER, 84, of Manning, died Sat., Dec. 7th, at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center. Funeral services for FRANK WEGNER will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Dec. 11th, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-to 7-pm Tue., Dec. 10th.  Visitation will resume Wed. morning at Zion Lutheran Church, one-hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.
