INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — Hospitals across Iowa are preparing for a possible influx of people later this month when thousands of bicyclists pedal through their cities. Up to 10,000 riders are expected to traverse the state in the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Race Across Iowa, also known as RAGBRAI. Buchanan County officials say they can reasonably assume at least some riders will require medical attention.

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — Charles City police are looking for a dognapper. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports a male pit bull mix was taken from the PAWS Humane Society shelter sometime during the night of July 5th. Shelter manager Julie Taylor says the dog was in a kennel with an outdoor run and someone broke the padlock on the run.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines Public Schools has announced its five schools will remain with the Central Iowa Metropolitan League. At least eight schools had discussed breaking away from the activities conference, but many of the schools had backed off that suggestion by Friday. The district announced that its five members would remain in the CIML at least through the 2015-16 school year.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A Dubuque mental health counselor who admitted to abusing a dependent adult has been sentenced to one year of probation. Sixty-nine-year-old Lowell Routley was sentenced last week after he pleaded guilty to dependent adult abuse. Cards win, Brewers SS Segura out after son’s death

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched seven strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals sent Milwaukee to its seventh straight loss, 10-2 on Saturday as the Brewers mourned the death of shortstop Jean Segura’s young son. Segura left the team and traveled home to the Dominican Republic, a day after his 9-month-old son died. The Brewers observed a moment of silence for Janniel Segura, and the clubhouse was closed before the game.

The 24-year-old shortstop learned his son had died after the Brewers’ 7-6 loss to St. Louis on Friday night. Manager Ron Roenicke said the boy had been ill. The Cardinals pulled into a first-place tie with Milwaukee in the NL Central. St. Louis trailed by 6 1/2 games on July 1.

Frustrated Brewers star Carlos Gomez struck out swinging in the fifth inning and tried three times without success to break the bat over his leg. He slammed his helmet and tore up his batting gloves.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ryan Hunter-Reay blew past the field with two laps to go and won the IndyCar race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday for his first victory since the Indianapolis 500. It was the fifth straight win in Iowa for Andretti Autosport, and the second in three years for Hunter-Reay.

Hunter-Reay hadn’t led a lap since Indianapolis, and he spent most of Saturday’s race far from contention. But he got new tires on a late pit stop and stormed past Tony Kanaan for his third victory in 2014. Josef Newgarden finished second, followed by Target Chip Ganassi teammates Kanaan and Scott Dixon. Ed Carpenter was fifth.

Helio Castroneves finished eighth, taking sole possession of the series points lead.
