Free Gardening Webinars to Focus on Tree Concerns

Ag/Outdoor, News

August 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Master Gardener program is once again offering a series of summer webinars free to all local residents with an interest in gardening. The theme for the 2014 Summer Webinar Series is “Totally Trees.” As the Emerald Ash Borer marches across the state, homeowners need to be prepared to recognize signs of damage, know what control options are available, and consider alternatives for replacement trees. All sessions will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The Cass County Extension Office is a local host site.

On Thursday August 14th, ISU Extension Entomologist, Mark Shour, will speak on Tree Pests, with a focus on recent pests of trees such as the Emerald Ash Borer and the impact of these pests on the Iowa landscape. On Thursday September 4th, Jeff Iles, Extension Nursery and Landscape Specialist, will speak on Ash Alternatives, providing ideas of other species of trees to consider planting in the home landscape.

Local participants will watch the presentation live from campus, projected onto a large screen, and have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the topic live with the presenter. There is no charge to attend the classes, and no requirements to attend previous sessions. Anyone with an interest in the topic is welcome to attend and learn.

Audit: Malvern Librarian edited receipts to hide purchases

News

MALVERN, Iowa (AP) – Auditors say a library director in a southwestern Iowa town repeatedly billed the city for improper purchases and altered receipts to cover up the practice. An investigation released today (Friday) by State Auditor Mary Mosiman found that former Malvern library director Stacey Buick misspent thousands of dollars.

Auditors say Buick billed the city for personal items like video games, groceries, and party decorations. A $1,200 home theatre system, a camera, a coffee machine, a window air conditioning unit and TracPhones were among the items flagged.

Auditors found that many receipts submitted to the city were altered with correction fluid or by cutting and pasting over the original descriptions of items. An envelope discovered in Buick’s office contained the original receipts.

Buick resigned last year.

QUICK-AS-A-WINK Pie Crust (8-9-14)

Family Fun in the Kitchen

August 8th, 2014 by Jim Field

CRUST:20140730_214706
1-3/4 c. all-purpose flour
½ t. salt
½ c. vegetable oil (I use corn oil)
2 T. water
METHOD: Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium bowl, combine flour and salt. In a glass measuring cup add oil and water. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until combined. (Do not over mix as this would develop the gluten in the flour too much and cause a tough crust.) With freshly washed hands, gently form dough into a ball. Put ball of dough into middle of 9-inch pie plate. Use fingers to spread dough toward sides of pan. Push dough evenly up to top of sides of pan so that there is enough dough to make a crimped edge. Crimp top edges of crust. Use a table fork and prick holes in bottom and sides of crust. This will keep crust from puffing up too much while baking. Bake for 10-15 min. or until crust is just starting to turn light brown. Remove from oven. Cool completely. Makes crust for one single-crust pie.
