It’s time for another “border brawl” as the fourth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes take on third-ranked Minnesota in college wrestling Saturday. Both the Hawks and Gophers have nine ranked wrestlers. The teams split their two meetings last season. Iowa junior Tony Ramos, who’s 15-0 and ranked 2nd at 133 pounds, says the Hawkeyes are up for the challenge. “It’s a big rivalry. We beat ’em last year, but when it came to the National Duals, they got the better of us there,” Ramos said. “It’s something we need to rebound from and improve on. It’s exciting for us and exciting for the fans to see where we’re at…you know, it’s time to go out and make a statement.”
Ramos is scheduled to face 6th ranked Chris Dardanes, a sophmore with a record of 12-2. “He’s a tough guy. He’s a competitor and he’s going to come out ready to fight,” Ramos said. “That’s something I’m prepared for.”
Iowa is 14-1 in duals this season, while Minnesota is 11-1. Both teams’ lone losses came against Oklahoma State. The dual between Iowa and Minnesota is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Williams Arena in Minneapolis and will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.

The Cass County Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday (Jan. 24th), approved an amendment to the County’s Zoning Ordinance, which changes the Business District section of the Ordinance to permit businesses that sell and repair firearms, and/or operate an indoor shooting gallery. The Commission will forward its recommendation to the Cass County Board of Supervisors, for the consideration and possible adoption of the amended ordinance.
A Massena man appeared before the Commission Thursday night at the courthouse in Atlantic, to present his plan to open a gun sales and repair shop and indoor shooting range, near Massena. Currently, that type of business is not allowed under the County’s Zoning Ordinance.
If the Supervisor’s approve the Zoning Commission’s recommendation to adopt the amended ordinance, the gun shop near Massena could be open later this spring.
Someone tried to clean-out the Red Oak Washboard Laundromat this week. According to Red Oak Police, a person or persons unknown used a blunt device to gain entry into the supply closet at the business, located in the 1400 block of North 1st Street, in Red Oak. Inside the closet, the thief or thieves removed a security system, a monitor and one of the cameras. The suspects also attempted to remove a change machine from a wall, but their efforts were stymied by some tough to remove bolts. Another change machine was tampered with, but not damaged.
The incident took place sometime between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m. Thursday, and resulted in a loss to the business of about $1,055 altogether. Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact Red Oak Police at 712-623-6500.
Things weren’t favoring the University of Iowa women’s basketball team with 5:30 remaining in Thursday’s Big Ten Conference clash with Wisconsin, but then Jaimie Printy took over.
Printy, a Hawkeye senior guard whose season ended prematurely because of injury a year ago against the Badgers in Madison, scored 14 consecutive points in a span of 3:33 to lead Iowa from a one-point deficit to a 10-point lead in what turned into a 71-60 Hawkeye victory.
For the season, Printy has made 33-of-33 free throws in the final five minutes of a game and she is 27-of-27 in the final two minutes. Three other Hawkeyes…Melissa Dixson, Bethany Doolittle and Theairra Taylor, scored 10 points apiece.
Iowa improved to 15-5 overall, 4-2 in the Big Ten; Wisconsin is 9-11, 1-6. Iowa travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sunday for a rematch with the Wolverines with a 1-p.m. tip. Michigan won, 68-64, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Jan. 6th.
