Hawkeyes Wrangle Cowboys, 22-9

STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The fourth-ranked University of Iowa men’s wrestling team defeated No. 2 Oklahoma State, 22-9, on Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena. This was the Cowboys’ first loss of the season.

 

The Hawkeyes won seven of 10 bouts and picked up bonus points at 174. Iowa outscored Oklahoma State 62-32 in match points and recorded 11 takedowns to Oklahoma State’s five.

 

“I feel like that was a good step,” said head coach Tom Brands. “That was an undefeated team here in Stillwater. The environment and all that we handled it. We have to keep getting better.”

  • The Hawkeyes picked up their 26th win in the all-time series against the Cowboys. Oklahoma State leads the series 29-26-2.
  • Iowa has won eight of the 10 last meetings between the two schools.
  • This was the Hawkeyes first win in Stillwater since 2015.

Field and brush fires reported across Iowa Sunday

(Southwest Iowa) – Firefighters across western and central Iowa were kept busy, today (Sunday), knocking down field and brush fires, some of which resulted from controlled burns, while the cause of other incidents were unknown. The Red Oak Fire Department reported on social media, that around 5:17-p.m, Sunday, firefighting crews from the Elliott, Red Oak and Grant FD’s were dispatched to the Justin & Angel Paul property at 1849 140th Street, for a reported brush pile fire that had gotten out of control. Crews were able to contain the fire and terminated fire/ground operations at 5:50-p.m. No injuries were reported.

A Ban on Open burning will be in effect beginning Monday morning, Feb. 26, 2024, for Page, Montgomery and Mills Counties. Harrison County remains under a burn ban until further notice. Adair and Guthrie Counties instituted a burn ban on Saturday. Residents are reminded to “Please make sure all previously burnt areas, brush piles, etc.. have been completely extinguished/buried.”

Less than three-hours after the fire Sunday evening was reported, Red Oak Fire crews were dispatched to property owned by Thomas and Beth Falk, at 1767 165th St, for a reported grass fire. First arriving Fire crews reported one-acre of grass on fire. Mutual Aid was automatically dispatched requesting the Stanton and Elliott Fire Departments, but those crews were  then disregarded.

Fire officials say the property owner had been conducting property clean-up and had a burn pit in use. It is believed that embers from this activity started the grass on fire. No injuries reported. Fire/ground operations were terminated at approximately 3:10-p.m.

In Story County, the Kelley Fire Department responded to a fire in a cornfield near 510th Avenue and 300th Street. According to the Story County Sheriff’s Office, the fire grew to 10,000 square feet. A nearby house was not damaged, and no injuries have been reported at this time.

Conditions on Monday may be favorable for more fires with gusty winds and dry conditions. Most of the state of Iowa will be under a Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service in Des Moines from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Drake women edge Northern Iowa

The Drake women maintained their two game lead in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bulldogs converted at the free throw line in the waning minutes, Sunday, and held off Northern Iowa 79-77. Drake is now 15-1 in the Valley. The Bulldogs won despite going 11-of-38 from three point range.

That’s Drake coach Allison Pohlman. Anna Miller scored 21 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as the Bulldogs won their seventh straight game.

JAMES LOGUE, 86, of Atlantic [formerly of Cumberland] – (Celebration of Life 2/29/24)

JAMES LOGUE, 86, of Atlantic, (formerly of Cumberland), died Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Griswold Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Griswold. A Celebration of Life service for JAMES LOGUE will be held 11-a.m, Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024,  at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

A visitation with family present will be held at the funeral home, beginning at 10 a.m., Thursday.

Burial will take place in the Southlawn Cemetery south of Atlantic, with full military rites being presented by the Atlantic Color Guard.

Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.

JAMES LOGUE is survived by:

His wife – Carol, of Atlantic.

His daughter – Sherri Luke, of Seattle, WA.

His brothers – Louis Logue, of Texas, and Dale Logue, of California.

Six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren & his son-in-law, James Erickson, of Atlantic.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY OPEN BURN BAN

[Red Oak, Iowa] – Montgomery County Emergency Management Director Brian Hamman today (Sunday), said “An open burn ban will go into effect Monday, February 26, 2024 at 8:00am, for all areas and jurisdictions within Montgomery County. The ban prohibits all open and controlled burning in Montgomery County, including all incorporated city limits within the county.”

Record high temperatures, limited to no moisture and continued drought conditions has created dangerous fire conditions throughout the entire area. Extended forecast outlooks show well above normal temperatures as well as extremely windy conditions causing concern that any outdoor fire will become large and out of control in a very short amount of time.

“Citizens are reminded to not throw out cigarettes from moving vehicles and to discontinue burning yard waste, piled tree debris, grass/agricultural ground and set asides or other items during this ban. Small recreational campfires are permitted only if they are conducted in a fireplace of brick, metal or heavy one-inch wire mesh, however extreme caution should be taken. Any campfire not in an outdoor fireplace is prohibited,” according to Hamman.

Violation of a burn ban can subject a person to criminal charges as well as civil liabilities for any damages, losses or injuries resulting from the fire. The open burn ban is anticipated to remain in effect until the county receives substantial precipitation alleviating the increased fire danger risk.

No. 4 Iowa women beat Illinois

The fourth ranked Iowa Hawkeye women connected on 17 three pointers and rolled to a 101-85 win over Illinois, Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes had 28 assists on 36 made baskets as the Hawkeyes improved to 13-3 in the Big Ten and 24-4 overall.

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. Caitlin Clark finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists but was only five of 14 from three point range. The Hawkeyes went to zone on defense and limited the Illini to 40 percent shooting.

The Hawkeyes will close the regular season next Sunday at home against second ranked Ohio State but first there is a Wednesday visit to Minnesota.

After struggling with illness Molly Davis gave the Hawkeyes a lift with 17 points.

Davis says the key for the Hawkeyes was ball movement.

CONNIE JENSEN, 85, of Anita, died Friday, February 23, 2024 at Cass Health in Atlantic. DALE JENSEN, 90, also of Anita, died Nov. 28, 2023. A Celebration of life open house for both CONNIE and DALE JENSEN will be held April 20, 2024 from 3-until 6-p.m., at the Crestwood Hills Golf Club in Anita.  Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

CAROLYN JOHNSON, 81, of Atlantic, died February 25, 2024, at Heritage House in Atlantic.  A Celebration of Life for CAROLYN JOHNSON will be held Saturday, March 9th at 11-a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements. The service will be recorded and available on the funeral home website by March 11th, will be available for viewing through the end of March.

At the conclusion of the service, Saturday, a special tribute will be given to Carolyn by the B.P.O. Does, Drove #23.

Visitation with the family present will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 9, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic.

Burial will be held in the Brighton Township Cemetery, near Marne.

JULIA ELIZABETH NELSON, 84, of Atlantic, died Sunday, February 25, 2024, at Cass Health in Atlantic. Funeral services for JULIA NELSON will be held 10-a.m. Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Open visitation with family will be held at the funeral on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A luncheon will be held following the service in the reception hall of the United Methodist Church.

The interment will take place at Atlantic Cemetery.
