Donations of cash needed now for Greenfield tornado victims, No more physical items please!

News

May 25th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

Since Tuesday’s tornado, both Greenfield United Methodist Church and St. John’s Catholic Church have been spots where physical donations have been dropped off or sent. While they’re grateful for physical donations, they say they don’t need them at the moment because they’re full. Instead, they and other community leaders are calling for monetary donations. Organizers at the churches say the Greater Greenfield Community Foundation will accept monetary donations for its Greenfield Tornado Relief Fund, which can be found here.

The Greater Greenfield Community Foundation is a nonprofit that’s been around for more than 40 years. Jennifer Garside, one of the board members, says the foundation normally does projects like building the fitness center so they’re used to handling large sums of money. Garside told KCCI that “In about a less than 24-hour period, we had over 900 emails to our foundation. Emails of people wanting to make donations.”

She said the funds will be used to help people and the community. Foundation members are this next week to form a plan to help people. Multiple rooms within Greenfield United Methodist Church are filled with donations, organized and ready for people to come pick up what they need.

On Friday, the church received the last physical donations they need: car seats and pack-and-plays for infants and toddlers from UnityPoint’s Blank Children’s Hospital. The team came out in several vehicles, delivering car seats and pack-and-plays that were new and still inside their packaging.

May 24th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Trojan softball team came back from 7-1 deficit on Friday night, to win 8-7 at home against the Ballard Bombers. Ballard came out swinging early in the top of the 1st scoring two quick runs of off three straight hits. Atlantic had a response in the bottom of the second scoring one run of their own from a Peyton McLaren RBI double to make it 2-1.

Things shifted for the Bombers in the top of the 4th where they went on to score five straight runs with base hit after base hit to make the game 7-1. Atlantic had a response of their own starting with a Makenna Sonntag 2 RBI double to score 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th to make it 7-5. The Trojans then brought in 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to it and a RBI single from Riley Wood in the bottom of the 6th gave them the go ahead run.

Atlantic had an impressive night from the efforts of Peyton McLaren who went 2-3 with an RBI and Makenna Sonntag going 1-2 with a 2 RBI double.

Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann’s message to his players on being down 7-1 was a concise one.

Atlantic’s next game will be a double header series at home against Clarinda. Coach Hinzmann hopes to see his teams effort from tonight carry over into Tuesday’s game.

The Trojans improve to 3-1 with the win. The Bombers fall to 1-3 and face off against Interstate-35 Saturday morning.
