(Red Oak, Iowa) – The Red Oak Police Department reports a man was arrested at around 12:30-a.m. today (Sunday), for Violation of Protection Order (A Simple Misdemeanor). 54-year-old Fred Francis Weich, IVth, of Red Oak, was arrested in the 400 block of East Maple Street, in Red Oak. He was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held without bond.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI football opened the 2024 season inside the UNI-Dome on Saturday with a commanding 35-7 rout of the Valparaiso Beacons in non-conference action. Unipanthers.com reports the Panthers racked up 363 rushing yards on the day, fourth-most in a single-game in the last 15 seasons and most since 2015 and controlled the game clock with nearly 35 minutes of offensive ball possession.

AMES, Iowa (via Iowacyclones.com) – Rocco Becht got the 50th season at Jack Trice Stadium off to a rousing start, Saturday. Becht completed a 54-yard pass on the game’s first play, then lofted a 21-yard touchdown pass on the very next play to start the Cyclones on their way to a 21-3 victory over North Dakota on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon.
Coming off a redshirt freshman season in which he threw for 3,120 yards, Becht also threw a second TD pass and scored once himself as Iowa State won its fourth-straight season opener on the turf at MidAmerican Energy Field. Becht finished 20-of-26 for 267 yards, with eight of those completions going to Jaylin Noel, who passed Charlie Kolar to move into fifth place on ISU’s career receiving list with 173. Noel compiled 135 receiving yards and is just three catches behind fourth-place Todd Blythe.
The Cyclones needed Becht’s sharp performance to turn back their feisty FCS opponent. North Dakota, 22nd in the preseason FCS rankings, made the playoffs last year and caused the Iowa State defense some problems with its ball-control offense, running 72 plays to 48 for ISU. But the ISU defense came up with enough stops, including Beau Freyler’s interception, to keep the Fighting Hawks out of the end zone. They got their only points on C.J. Elrichs’ 26-yard field goal, which came on the 23rd play of a drive that started at the North Dakota 3 and took up almost all of the second quarter.
Becht went deep to his favorite target on the first play, Noel catching the ball in stride between two defenders for a 54-yard gain to the North Dakota 21. On the next snap, Becht hit Jayden Higgins on a fade in the left corner of the end zone, and the Cyclones were up 7-0 just 38 seconds into the game. It was Iowa State’s first scoring drive to open the season since the Cyclones went 85 yards in eight plays the first time they had the ball in a 42-10 win over Southeast Missouri in the 2022 opener. After Elrichs’ field goal with 3 minutes left in the first half, the Cyclones answered quickly, driving 65 yards in seven plays for Becht’s 14-yard strike to Noel in the middle of the end zone for a 14-3 halftime lead.
The Cyclones marched 96 yards for their final touchdown after North Dakota punter Luke Silvernale dropped the snap but somehow got off a 49-yard bouncing kick that was downed at the ISU 4. Becht went 7-for-7 for 73 yards on the drive, which he finished with a 2-yard sneak. He had hit Higgins on a beautifully thrown ball for a 21-yard touchdown five plays earlier, but it was nullified by an illegal formation penalty.
Higgins finished with five catches for 75 yards. He and Noel were targeted a combined 13 times and they caught all 13 balls. North Dakota State transfer Eli Green also was a major contributor in the passing game, catching four passes for 44 yards.
Iowa State hits the road next Saturday for its annual Cy-Hawk matchup with Iowa at Kinnick Stadium. CBS will televise the game which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. KJAN will carry the game beginning at 12:30-p.m., next Saturday.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (via Hawkeyesports.com) – The 25th ranked University of Iowa football team defeated Illinois State, 40-0, on Saturday afternoon on Duke Slater Field at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes led 6-0 at the half, before an explosion of offense in the second half saw Iowa score on five of seven drives. Cade McNamara connected on 21-of-31 pass attempts for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Reece Vander Zee led the way for Iowa receivers hauling in five receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Lachey caught six passes for 63 yards and Jacob Gill pulled down a touchdown.
Kaleb Johnson rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 11 attempts that all came in the second half. Kamari Moulton had 65 yards on 19 attempts. Defensively, Jay Higgins led the team with seven tackles (three solo). Nick Jackson had five tackles (two solo), and Aaron Graves had four solo tackles with three sacks.
Jermari Harris pulled in an interception and Sebastian Castro forced a fumble that TJ Hall recovered.

(Winnebago County, Iowa) – A person operating a 2018 Polaris UTV was injured Saturday evening on private property near Lake Mills, in northern Iowa’s Winnebago County. The Iowa State Patrol reports the machine was near a private bond when the driver’s side tire entered the bank of the pond, causing the UTV to roll onto its side, pinning the driver under the UTV. They were not wearing a seat belt. The accident happened at around 5:30-p.m.
Life saving measures were performed at the scene. The UTV operator was transported to the Mayo Hospital in Rochester, MN, by MercyOne/Airmed helicopter. Their name was not immediately released, pending notification of family.
The Patrol was assisted at the scene by an Iowa DNR Officer, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Mills Police and Fire, and Forest City Ambulance.
(Griswold, Iowa) – In an update to our previous social media posts, the Iowa State Patrol, today (Sunday), said two men and a child were injured during a head-on crash north of Griswold, Saturday evening. The accident happened at 6:57-p.m. on Highway 48 near 550th Street.The Patrol says a 2008 Buick driven by 26-year-old Dustin Lee Jones, of Elliott, was traveling south on Highway 48, when the vehicle crossed the center line of the road and collided with a northbound 1997 Ford pickup, driven by 59-year-old Mark Allyn Liddell, of Griswold.
The car came to rest facing southeast on the east shoulder of the road, while the pickup came to rest facing east, on the west shoulder. Jones was transported by ambulance to Cass Health in Atlantic before being flown by LifeNet helicopter to the UNMC in Omaha.
Liddell, who was not wearing a seat belt, and and 4-year-old male child who was properly restrained in one of the vehicles, were transported by Griswold Rescue and Red Oak Rescue, to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak. Liddell was subsequently taken to the UNMC, and the child was transported to Children’s Hospital.
The crash remains under investigation. Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted at the scene. The road remained blocked until about 9:45-p.m., Saturday.
(Griswold, Iowa) – Two people were injured during a collision this (Saturday) evening, about a mile north of Griswold, just south of the Griswold Fish Farm. According to dispatch reports, the crash occurred at around 6:55-p.m. near 67575 550th Street. One subject was on the ground and unconscious. One of the vehicles was said to have been on fire.
Griswold Rescue transported a 26-year-old male to Cass Health in Atlantic. He was immediately flown by LifeNet Helicopter to an undisclosed hospital. Red Oak Rescue transported the second victim to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.
The accident was under investigation, and additional information is currently not available.
(Marshalltown, Iowa) – Police in Marshalltown, along with the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations, are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found on a road.
Public safety personnel responded at around 5:45-a.m., Saturday (Aug. 31), to the area of North 12th Avenue and Bromley Street in Marshalltown, for a medical emergency. The Marshall County 911 Communications Center received a call about a person found in the roadway on North 12th Avenue with serious injuries. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found an unresponsive, adult male, in the roadway. The man had visible traumatic injuries. Immediate medical care was provided to the individual. 
He was transported to the Marshalltown hospital and was later transferred to a medical facility in Des Moines, where he died. The cause and manner of death are not known at this time. The man’s identity was being withheld by law enforcement, pending notification of family.

MARLENE MILLER, 71, of Anita, died Friday, August 30, 2024 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Funeral Services for MARLENE MILLER will be 10:30-a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the First Lutheran Church in Wiota. Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Anita has the arrangements.
The family will be present for visitation from 4-until 6-p.m. Friday, September 6, 2024 at the funeral home.
Burial will follow the service at the First Lutheran Cemetery in Wiota, IA
