LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adrian Gonzalez homered twice and Zack Greinke gave the Los Angeles Dodgers the clutch performance they needed in a 6-4 victory over the Cardinals on Wednesday that trimmed St. Louis’ lead to 3-2 in the NL championship series.

Carl Crawford and A.J. Ellis also went deep for the Dodgers, who rediscovered their power stroke just in time to save their season. They held in the ninth, when St. Louis scored twice off closer Kenley Jansen before he struck out pinch-hitter Adron Chambers with two on to end it.

The best-of-seven series shifts back to St. Louis for Game 6 on Friday night, when ace Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to start for the Dodgers against rookie Michael Wacha. When those two squared off in Game 2, the Cardinals won 1-0 on an unearned run.

Inexperienced Northern Iowa preps for season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — One of the Northern Iowa’s hallmarks under basketball coach Ben Jacobson has been veteran leadership. The Panthers won’t have much of that to lean on this season. Three starters and three of the program’s top four scorers have moved on, leaving Jacobson with the least experienced group in his eight-year tenure in Cedar Falls.

The Panthers have 10 newcomers — including five true freshmen and Tennessee transfer Wes Washpun — that they’ll need to find roles for before the season opener on Nov. 9 at Ohio.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Justin Houston, Tamba Hali and the rest of the Kansas City Chiefs defense doesn’t seem to worry about their place in history. Wins are more important to them.
If they stopped to take stock through the first six weeks, they might be surprised.

After piling up 10 sacks in a win over the Raiders last Sunday, the Chiefs now have 31 this season. That puts them on pace to not only shatter the franchise record of 60 set during the 1990 season, but the NFL record of 72 set by the ’84 Bears. The sack became an official stat in 1982.

Houston leads the Chiefs with 9 1/2 sacks, tied with the Colts’ Robert Mathis for the most in the NFL. Hali is fourth with 7 1/2 on the year.
