The Harlan Police Department reports one-person was injured during an accident that took place Tuesday, at the intersection of 6th and Hill Streets. Officials say Kristina Namanny, of Harlan, was transported by Medivac Ambulance to Myrtue Memorial Hospital, after her 1998 Chevy was hit by a 2000 Chevy, that was driven by Karen Petersen-Blum, of Harlan.

According to the police report, Petersen-Blum was westbound on Hill Street and stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with 6th Street. When she didn’t see Namanny’s vehicle approaching, Petersen-Blum pulled out into intersection and hit the left rear side of the Namanny car. Petersen-Blum was cited for Failure to Yield. Damage from the collision amounted to $4,500.

Authorities in Harlan report three people were arrested over the course of the past week. On Nov. 7th, 52-year old John Piper, was taken into custody when an off-duty Harlan Police officer had an altercation with him in the 1600 block of Chatburn Ave. Piper was in possession of a HyVee shopping cart full of groceries that were not in bags. The groceries and cart were taken to HyVee where they were identified as stolen. The value estimate of the groceries and cart was approximately $360.

Piper was transported, by an on-duty officer, to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with assault on a peace officer, 4th degree theft and public intoxication. The officer went to Myrtue Medical Center where he was treated and released with minor injuries.

On Sunday (Nov. 10th), 28-year old Tarren Baldogo, of Halbour, was arrested in Harlan, following a traffic stop. Baldogo was taken to the Shelby County Jail where she was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

And on Tuesday (Nov. 12th) 44-year old Clinton Scheffler, of Harlan, was arrested at the Shelby County court house when officers observed him trying to talk to Lachelle Petersen. There was a no contact order in effect between both Scheffler and Petersen. Scheffler was transported to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with violating a no contact order.

A western Iowa woman has been sentenced to six months in prison for stealing Social Security benefits that the agency mistakenly paid to a dead person for 11 years. 61-year old Marlene Moore of Glenwood will also serve six months of home confinement after her release under the sentence issued Tuesday by U.S. District Judge John Jarvey.

Prosecutors say the Social Security Administration was never notified that a beneficiary died in 2001, and kept sending monthly checks of roughly $1,300 until 2012.  Moore had access to the unidentified beneficiary’s bank account and used the money to pay for personal expenses. In all, she took nearly $165,000 from the account. She pleaded guilty in July to theft.

Prosecutors say Moore used the money to live beyond her means, buying a second house and cars.

The Vision Iowa Board this morning awarded grants to four community attraction projects around the state including one in Shelby County. The Harlan Community School District was awarded $200,000 for the renovation project to Merrill Field. Superintendent Justin Wagner along with other school officials and Harlan City Administrator Terry Cox and Shelby County Supervisor Steve Kenkel received word from the Vision Iowa Board around 10am in Des Moines. Wagner says the project means a lot not only to the school but the Harlan Community.

Wagner says “The overall project is to bring the current complex ADA compliance, to replace existing structures that have been there since the 1970’s. We have been frugal with how we have used the complex but it is a very high frequency used complex. Not for the school district but more importantly we have 80 activities in the community.”

The total renovation project for the Merrill Field Complex is estimated at $1.528 million and before the CAT grant today, the Harlan Community Education Foundation had raised $1.337 million. Now that the estimated cost has been raised, Wagner says work will start in the spring.

Wagner says “We’re hoping to have the project start March 1st. We are hoping to get some out of season costs to save some money. Specifications are being written and we knew we needed those whether we were move ahead or not. So we are hoping by March 1st that we start the renovation project as a whole.”

Other communities receiving grant money from Vision Iowa were the City of Manchester, Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science in Davenport and the Des Moines Performing Arts.

The Atlantic Police Department reports the arrest on Tuesday of 38-year old Patricia Mundorf. The Atlantic woman was booked into the Cass County Jail on two counts of Identity Theft.

An Atlantic man was sentenced Tuesday to more than 3.5-years in prison for possessing a stolen firearm. U-S District Court Judge John Jarvey handed down the 46-month term for 42-year old  Gregory Allen Jennings,  and ordered Jennings to serve three years of supervised release when he completes his imprisonment.

On November 12th (2013), Jennings pled guilty to knowingly possessing a stolen firearm. The charge was the result of an investigation into firearms which were stolen from a vehicle in Atlantic, Iowa, in January of 2013. The investigation revealed that Jennings had received the firearm shortly after it was stolen, and was attempting to sell the firearm when it was located by law enforcement.

The investigation was conducted by the Atlantic, Iowa, Police Department, and the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the case was prosecuted by the U.S.
