DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Frigid cold continues to hover over Iowa as the state prepares for coming snow. The National Weather Service says high temperatures in the single digits will continue Saturday in most of the state, while southern portions of Iowa will see temperatures rise to nearly 20 degrees. Snow is expected after midnight and will likely continue throughout Sunday, with accumulations of 4 to 5 inches in western Iowa. Most of the state is expecting between 1 and 3 inches.

Bitter cold will hang on well into the week, with the weather service predicting lows to hover around zero Monday and Tuesday before falling to 10-below in northern Iowa on Wednesdays. Lows in the south on Wednesday should climb to 15 degrees.

Chiefs’ Charles continues to break records

Sports

December 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jamaal Charles is about as difficult to catch in the locker room as he is in the open field, where he routinely makes defenders look foolish with his swiveling hips and world-class speed. But if you catch him for a moment, you’ll quickly learn why he’s among the best in the NFL: The pursuit of perfection drives him every day.

Charles enters the weekend third in the NFL and tops in the AFC with 1,011 yards rushing, and his 4.6 yards per carry is tied for seventh among those with at least 100 attempts. He also has nine TDs rushing, one behind league leader Adrian Peterson of the Vikings.

Hawkeyes, Cyclones headline Iowa doubleheader

Sports

December 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Cyclones and Hawkeyes are at the forefront of a college basketball resurgence in Iowa. Each have already earned Top 25 rankings and are drawing sellout crowds well ahead of conference play. They’ve also overshadowed a surprisingly strong start by Drake. The Bulldogs were picked to finish last in the Valley this season. But so far they’re 6-1 under first-year coach Ray Giacoletti.

Drake will get its chance to make a statement when it faces No. 23 Iowa (8-1) today (Saturday) at the Big 4 Classic in Des Moines. The second annual event replaced the old home-and-home scheduling arrangements between the Hawkeyes, Cyclones and their Missouri Valley rivals.

No. 17 Iowa State (6-0) kicks off the doubleheader against Northern Iowa (3-4).
